First time dealing with cat constipation, need advice/ positive vibes. | |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 77139949 United States 12/16/2018 09:42 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | My nine yr old Snickers is constipated. Two weeks ago she had an enema done at my animal hospital. They took photos that showed she had lots of stool. And I guess she expelled a bunch when they preformed it. She was brought home with a liquid laxative that she hates to take p.o., but we learned she will not think twice when it is dispensed over wet food. The next day she passed stool twice in the afternoon, each time a normal amount of stool was passed. First time she ate the liquid she pooped a little bit. But now she pees next to the litter box, & can not poop very much. Two days ago I bought powerful things from Amazon to help with bowl health and kidneys. But those will take 1 week to show up. Quoting: ThaSaltineCracka This morning she urinated in the litter box twice and tried to poop. We have thrown out the hard food and only feed her wet food. If things continue, then sometime this week she will be brought to the vet again. I do not want her to contract sepsis from the feces. She has lost 3 lbs this year, but that is from rigorous enforcement of wet food consumption due to her weight. 12lbs from 15. Will increasing her activity help with peristalsis? She is long haired and friend told me bowels could be slowed down bc of excess hair consumption. I had been giving them ( I have three cats total, so hard to isolate them when eating) small amount of hard dental treats couple times a week for three weeks last month due to one of them having gingivitis. Could the extra calcium intake inhibit bowel function? And wouldn't it then go away on its own after she stopped eating the treats, if that is the root cause? This is my first experience with feline constipation. I hate feeling helpless and I don't like just trying anything haphazardly to see what works. But I must find a solution! Thank you for reading this. Long post I know, sorry. It's just a rotten thing to go through, especially during the holidays. Get some rubber medical grade gloves and Vaseline. You will have to artificially stimulate the anal cavity with a dab or two of Vaseline just inside the anal cavity. If you fill to icky about doing it then get the cat to the vet ASAP. The home remedy does work and a Vet will tell you the same thing. He will just charge you for it......lol The Vaseline in the anal cavity will work. One of my midsize dogs a English Bull Terrier. He was constipated like you don't know what so I called Vet and he advised Vaseline inside the anal cavity, so I did it and within a hour of so he started pushing the turds out. Barking while he was pushing but it got it all cleared out. |

Dame User ID: 77047309 United States 12/16/2018 10:25 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | We have a cat that survived a coyote attack. She made it through a couple surgeries, but her intestines remain a problem. The vet said he wouldn't do another surgery, so we have been on our own. First, she eats only fancy feast. Before anyone slams me, it's what has kept her alive for 6 years since the attack When she is having trouble I give her butter to lick. That usually does the trick, but it takes a day. When it gets really bad, I use baby suppositories. If you can't find baby you can use adult but you need to slice them into three or four slivers. Your cat is going to be very upset with you, so grab a towel and hold her as long as you can giving the suppository time to work. It usually works within 5 to 10 mins. It's pure glycerin so it wont harm her, it will soften the stool and stimulate the bowels. If she only has a small amount of stool, you can do another round. I've had to go 4 rounds, I would recommend more than three without an xray. You don't want to stimulate the bowels if there is a major blockage, so easy does it You can pick up the suppositories at any drug store You do need to place the suppositories up in the rectum or else it will slide right out. You might want to pick up latex gloves. Last Edited by Dame on 12/16/2018 10:28 PM |

Thank you for reading this. Long post I know, sorry. It's just a rotten thing to go through, especially during the holidays. I didn’t read everyone’s response but canned unsweetened organic pumpkin, not pie filling, or fresh puréed cooked pumpkin works for both constipation and diarrhea. My current kitty doesn’t have those issues but my girl who passed away a few years ago would get hair balls. The vet gave me this tuna flavored dark brown gel , I think it was called laxatone, that worked really well. I hope Snickers feels better soon! Everybody lies. |

Nice work, however, it's a little counter-productive since a hit and run thread simply flags your intentions and can be detected by the most basic traffic analysis. What you need to do to stay covert is to come back to the thread from the same IP and post a response occasionally. That's what all the other covert communicators on GLP do. Eleven-15 User ID: 76494719 United States 12/17/2018 12:07 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I solved this with my white tiger by eliminating cat food with grain. It must be grain-free, canned and dry. Quoting: DeploraVision ™ If you feed your cat canned food, switch to real tuna (chunk light in water cheap .87 cents a can) - this is pure protein and no grain. Your cat will start crapping immediately the next day, normal crap. Also fill a water bowl in front of your cat, put many waterbowls out with fresh water. Encourage your cat to drink. I can fill up a water bowl and tell mine, 'drink the water', and then step back a few feet and be quiet, and my cat will start drinking lots of water. There, we fixed your cat. I'll send you a bill. Mine loves to sit in the tub and drink from the faucet. Anyone who has read GLP for any period of time has acquired good knowledge mixed in with the 99% noise. The trick is learning to filter out the noise. Quote from Anonymous Coward (AC) |

The will of the people is the only legitimate foundation of any government, and to protect its free expression should be our first object. ~ Thomas Jefferson, Inaugural Address, 1801 It is not only vain, but wicked, in a legislator to frame laws in opposition to the laws of nature, and to arm them with the terrors of death. ThaSaltineCracka (OP) User ID: 77142143 United States 12/22/2018 09:25 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Hello, been some days. Short of it is, she has E coli. She has had blood work done 2x. The most recent being done the day she was brought home with antibiotics (12/15/18). These were her results. ALB 4.4 (norm: 2.2 - 4.4) ALP 28 (norm: 10- 90) ALT 41 (norm: 20 - 100) AMY 1528 (norm: 300 - 1100)**** TbiL 0.3 (norm: 0.1 - 0.6) BUN 175 (norm: 10 - 30)**** CA 9.7 (norm: 8.0 - 11.8) PHOS 11.7 (norm: 3.4 - 8.5)**** CRE 9.5 (norm 0.3 - 2.1)**** GlU 135 (norm: 70 - 150) NA+ 144 (norm: 142 - 164) K+ 3.0 (norm 3.7 - 5.8)**** TP 8.0 (norm:5.4 - 8.2) GLOB 3.8(norm: 1.5 - 5.7) Since then she has been getting one half tab of antibiotic pill every 24hrs, or once a day. We have been encouraging fluids and ambulation. Physically she has improved. She likes to jump on top of the ottoman or couch to rest. Responds appropriately to physical attention & love (she likes to be brushed with the cat comb and has started to lift her tail halfway if I call her name when she is walking. Definitely still week but stuble improvements noted. Last night I took a nap on the couch with her on top of me. She responded to love and purred. When she was getting fluids at the vets they said she ate like a cow of the special wet food they gave her. We got a pee pad and put it under the litterbox when she misses. The floors are stone but it seeps into the grout. I also try to give her the potassium glutamate gel that was brought home with her. Also brought from Amazon two vials of Petwellbeing brand- Smooth BM Gold and Kidney support gold for cats. hiding them in a pillpocket usually does the trick or just drop it on the wetfood. I think she can smell it so I always have to hide it in something. She has been passing stool every couple days either near the litterbox or near the xmass tree. It is usually one glob of dung rather than her usual pebbles. Pees regularly though and always either in or right next to litterbox. No unusual cries of pain. She and the other two are all indoor cats, and she doesn't like people food. Where could this come from>? And how to prevent from returning if she makes it through? She is a tough bird, love her so much. Purebred Balinese born with cerebral hyperplasia. Half deaf and anmost half blind. Already had two surguries for bladder stones. Short term goal is for her to survive through xmass. Thank you for the imput. Peace and good luck to everyone. Btw, I'm a nurse (a male nurse at that ;P) and that is why the post seems so "rigid".
