In a speech in Belfast, the prime minister restated her "unshakeable" commitment to avoiding a hard border after Brexit. Mrs May said the backstop's "potential indefinite nature" was the issue. (pg. 71)-UK Government on verge of collapse No-deal Brexit threat to 40 trade deals, says CBI The UK risks "crashing out" of 40 trade agreements spanning five continents in the event of a no-deal Brexit, a business organisation has warned. The CBI said there were "hugely damaging implications" for the UK if it had to leave trade deals it has through its membership of the European Union. It said many firms did not know relationships with customers "across the globe" were at risk from a no-deal. [link to www.bbc.co.uk (secure)] Oh the horror, the doom! FORTY trade deals, FIVE continents. Be scared, be very afraid! Or actually you know what, you can take your project fear and you can shove it. A no-deal Brexit has been a possibility from day one. Infact that's what should have happened in the summer of 2016 anyway. Where were the warnings about these 40 trade agreements back then? Why is this only making the news now with less than two months before Brexit is due? Well we know why, it's less to do with informing people about so called risks and more about using their project fear ammo selectively. Last Edited by CoronaCoaster on 02/06/2019 05:39 AM |

(pg. 71)-UK Government on verge of collapse Greg Clark, the business secretary, is giving evidence to the Commons business committee. As my colleague Dan Sabbagh reports, Clark said the effective deadline for a Brexit deal was within “the next couple of weeks” because exporters need to know what is happening before they despatch goods on a six-week sea journey to the far east. Some journalists are interpreting Clark’s comment as meaning the real deadline is Thursday 14 February, when MPs are due to next vote on Brexit, or the day after. James Brokenshire said there might be another series of non-binding votes on possible Brexit alternatives instead. The prime minister has to get an agreement with the EU passed by MPs by 29 March to avoid a no-deal Brexit. She will ask MPs for more time to get changes to the deal in talks with Brussels - but Labour has accused her of "cynically" running down the clock. [link to www.bbc.co.uk (secure)] |

(pg. 71)-UK Government on verge of collapse Prime Minister Theresa May has suffered a fresh defeat in a Commons vote on her Brexit strategy by 303 to 258. Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has called on the prime minister - who was not in the Commons chamber for the vote - to "admit her Brexit strategy has failed". Tory rebels abstained, saying the government's motion implied a no-deal Brexit would be ruled out. Ministers said that was not the case but defeat would make life more difficult for the PM in EU talks. Mrs May has promised MPs a final, decisive vote on her Brexit deal with the EU when she has secured the changes to it she believes MPs want to see. A Labour amendment calling for that final, meaningful vote to be held before 27 February was earlier defeated by 16 votes. [link to www.bbc.co.uk (secure)] Chances of a no deal just increased then.
