The BBC's political correspondent, Vicki Young, says that there are "lots of rumours" that ministers and even Cabinet ministers may well be resigning from government over their votes this evening.

Former leader of UKIP Nigel Farage says that he accepts that the UK may no longer be leaving the EU on 29 March.

He says that the prime minister and Parliament do not have the "will to see it through".

He adds that the withdrawal agreement tabled was a "far worse situation" than being members of the EU.

"In the end, we are going to get Brexit, because the genie is out of the bottle," he says.

Jacob Rees-Mogg, the Tory Brexiter, asks the speaker to confirm that a motion of the house does not override statute law.

John Bercow, the speaker, confirms that that is the case.

First resignation reported

Sarah Newton, a minister at the Department for Work and Pensions, is reported by other MPs to have resigned after defying the government whip over the no-deal vote.

Downing Street briefing just broken up. Ministers who voted against the whip tonight will be expected to resign, those who abstain *will not*.
