Labour's official position was to abstain on Sarah Wollaston's motion calling for another referendum, arguing that now was not the right time for a fresh vote.

Twenty five Labour MPs rebelled against their party leadership by voting for the amendment, including David Lammy, Owen Smith, Ian Murray, Stella Creasy and Meg Hillier.

Eighteen Labour MPs rebelled in a different way - by opposing the motion. These included Kate Hoey, John Mann and Caroline Flint.

Benn/Cooper/Boles/Letwin amendment to take control of Brexit through indicative votes FAILS BY 312 votes to 314

Benn amendment to allow MPs to take over gov role has been defeated by 2!

Very significant defeat... good for Brexit

Breaking: Tom Watsons adviser quits front bench to vote against Corbyn

[link to www.stokesentinel.co.uk (secure)]

Stoke-on-Trent North MP Ruth Smeeth has resigned as a shadow ministerial aide – to vote against a ‘People’s Vote’ on Brexit.

Labour had called on its MPs to abstain on an amendment calling for a second referendum this afternoon, but Ms Smeeth said she had to break the whip to vote against it.

This meant she had to step down as Labour deputy leader Tom Watson’s parliamentary private secretary, a position she has held for two years.

I've resigned from Labour's front bench this evening in order to vote against a second referendum. This was a difficult decision but I have a duty to support the will of my constituents. We need to leave, and leave with a deal that works for the Potteries

MPs have voted against the Labour Party's frontbench amendment, which rejects the prime minister's deal, no-deal and calls for an extension of Article 50 to allow time to find a different approach, by 318 votes to 302 - a majority of 16.

I think they have calculated that the UK parliament will cave in and vote through May's rotten deal soon enough. Robert Peston had MP guests on his show last night from the different parties and factions, but yet all of them were cautiously optimistic that May's deal would get voted through.

Govt motion to extend Article 50 passes by 412-202. Brexit delayed until June 30 (as long as EU agree) >>> So over half Conservative MPs voted against PM as well as multiple cabinet members. This is a very unhappy ship indeed

So many 'what ifs' still at play. BERKow could even end up being the accidental hero of the hour if he refuses to allow May's deal to be brought again to a meaningful vote next week, because of rules that state the exact same thing can't be voted on twice in a single session of parliament.

Could John Bercow stop Theresa May putting her Brexit deal to Parliament for a third vote?
