MPs voting on Hilary Benn amendment, which is co-signed by Lincolnshire MP @NickBoles It would allow MPs to hold series of indicative votes next week, suggesting alternative ways forward for Brexit

BREAKING - SECOND REFERENDUM AMENDMENT DEFEATED
MPs REJECT by 334 votes to 85 (majority: 249)

good, so that should put an end to the calls for a second referendum once and for all
 Quoting: NewGeneration2019

You'd think so.
But is this a motion rather than a legally binding change of the law?

NOTE WELL, last night's vote against NO DEAL is not legally binding on the gvt. NO DEAL is still on the table, they just covered it up with a pile of gobbledegook paperwork.

Re: UPDATES: UK govt loses third vote on rotten Brexit deal, motion of no confidence looming? (pg. 71)-UK Government on verge of collapse
Could you imagine if this was happening in France now with a Frexit Jo public would go insane. We are just not there yet protest wise as France.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77436264

Nowhere near the French style of protests, yes, there will be unrest whether we stay or leave, strong feelings on both sides of the vote. It would appear that if we do leave it's going to be a softer Brexit, whilst the die hard leavers will cry betrayal and label MP'S as traitors, it has to be said, whichever political party were to be in power they have to realise that nearly half of those who voted wanted to remain. So a soft Brexit will deliver the end result of the vote, but those who wanted to stay will still have an connection to Europe.

I voted to leave, but just out curiosity, what would our members here prefer if you had only two choices; 2nd referendum or a soft Brexit?ukuk
Quoting: Middle of the road 77104401

A real brexit, not this fake rubbish
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77436264

OK, how about a 2nd referendum, with a leave victory rewarded with a hard Brexit, would you take the risk?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77104401

NO.
A lawful referendum vote was duly held under the UK's constitutionally lawful first past the post system to ascertain the will of the people .

The choice was simple - leave or remain in the EU.
A lawful and democratic majority of leave votes won,
The matter was settled there.

To hold another referendum on essentially the same question would be to cast ALL UK elections and referenda into doubt henceforth. It would destroy what shreds of democracy there are left in the UK.
Thus, major constitutional crisis of epic proportions.(which probably would mean widespread rioting and rebellion)

I hate to admit it but I find this all very complicated. That said, I am all for sticking it to the EU, one way or the other.
 Quoting: Moppie

I think most of us are thinking as you are, it's a lot to take in and has a lot of out-comes/implications.
 Quoting: clock

It honestly isn't as complicated as it is portrayed.
It's Out or In.
The only thing we're seeing now is the tortuously nasty and, on one side, treacherous games of each gang to get their own way - regardless of what the British people voted for.

Whichever gang wins, there will be outcomes and implications.
And, either way it's us ordinary Brits who will have to bear the lion's share of the shite and to pick up the pieces that these gangsters have splattered all over the place and just soldier on putting our country back together again.

Because, God knows, our 'leaders' have shown absolutely no care for the mess they've been making - they don't care, they'll just be booted out on humoungous pensions (courtesy of you and me) and put in commercial boardrooms to scam yet more cream for themselves.

Don't mind me and my common sense but why don't you just leave without a deal and pull a Donald J Trump and renegotiate new deals as they come along.

You'd at least get what YOU want that way instead of what the EU wants.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77303818

YES!! A thousand times yes!

That's what the majority voted for.

WE the people would get what we want. It's a common sense and reasonable way to approach the issues.

But we the people are not in charge. (Funny how that works in a 'democracy')...our 'leaders' wouldn't get what they personally want = fat EU sinecures, EU business opportunities, EU approval for their business scams etc etc.ad nauseum.

And that's only the 'nice' stuff. There seem to be many in Parliament that have a very dark agenda to wreck Britain one way or another.

We need a Donald Trump. He's half-british. Please can we borrow him...asap?

If they gave us a second referendum and Brexiteers won, do

you honestly believe Theresa May would honour that?

NO F*CKIN CHANCE!
 Quoting: clock

Yep. A second referendum would certainly be rigged, just like the Scottish Independence vote.

Plus, apart from that, a second referendum campaign would certainly result in hand to hand fighting in the streets.

Amazing how divisive the EU is behind the scenes, isn't it?

The EU is not and never has been what they want you to think it is.

Jacob Rees-Mogg, the Tory Brexiter, asks the speaker to confirm that a motion of the house does not override statute law.

John Bercow, the speaker, confirms that that is the case.

Motion of House cannot override statute law.
As law stands, we leave the #EU without a deal in 16 days.

Very close! I didn't expect it to be close.

Anyway how does it matter? Unless the EU will UNANIMOUSLY (that includes Hungary, Poland, Greece, etc.) agrees to extending a deadline, they're out on March 29, regardless of what Parliament does.

The only thing I don't like about it, from the standpoint of the Brits, is that I heard on the radio that the Government's plan for hard Brexit is that they will raise export tariffs but eliminate import tariffs. It will bribe consumers that way in the short term, but THAT is why hard Brexit would "hurt exports". Because the Government will implement it that way.

The Liberals and RINO-like Conservatives do their best to obstruct. There is one legitimate issue though, what do they do about the border in Ireland?

The right way to solve that would be for the UK to get the fuck out of Ireland. As in. off the island. Then, no border problem!

You're right about the vote and the next step = exit on 28Mar unless all EU members agree to extension.

But I would take anything this gvt says with a massive dose of salt.
May and her ministers and MPs have continually demonstrated that they will promise one thing and do another, pledge whatever and break that pledge the next morning.
Also, remember that UK's mainstream media are massively biased. Sadly, their reportage is not always reliable or full.
