I always leaned towards they are some type of ET.

There was the 6 million dollar man episode in the 70s which suggested this as well. I'm no fan of TV shows, but dam if this episode doesn't touch on this very topic. In fact, bigfoot in this series, was a robot for a human like race. They seemed to use it as some form of centurion guard to distract humans from getting too close to their underground base. Well, not to worry, LMFAO, Steve Austin to the rescue!

This wasn't the only episode either, there were a few others where Steve actually encountered the off world race.
