Tsunami kills at least 222 in Indonesia, more than 800 injured

JAKARTA (REUTERS, AFP, THE JAKARTA POST/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) - A tsunami following a volcanic eruption in Indonesia on Saturday (Dec 22) has killed 222 people, with hundreds more injured, officials said on Sunday.

National disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said 843 people were injured and 28 were missing, as of 4pm local time.

“This number will continue to rise, considering not all places have been checked,” Dr Sutopo told a media briefing in Yogyakarta.

The tsunami was caused by “an undersea landslide resulting from volcanic activity on Anak Krakatau” and was exacerbated by an abnormally high tide because of the current full moon, he said.

"Tsunami warning buoys are positioned to warn of tsunamis originated by earthquakes at underwater tectonic plate boundaries," explains Prof Dave Rothery from the UK's Open University.

"Even if there had been such a buoy right next to Anak Krakatau, this is so close to the affected shorelines that warning times would have been minimal given the high speeds at which tsunami waves travel," he says.

I feel the same... I'm getting the odd tones and clicks in my ears too aswell as odd random pains in various parts of my body...

We will see these sorts of anomalies happen more widely and quickly around the world now, I believe...

It could well be, but I couldn't help noticing the use of the number 222, which I'm sure bears an occult message.

No, Krakatoa in 1883

It's one of the more "monitored" volcanos over there, but even so, when it blows, the tsunami is a predictable result. The proximity to the adjacent coastline doesn't allow much escape time between eruption and tsunami landfall...that coastline isn't a good place to inhabit, but the excellent fishing makes it worth the risk to them...living with the devil...
...I'd like to see an active volcano before I pass...

On Sunday evening it was reported that the tsunami sirens were activated earlier on Sunday afternoon which lead to some panic. However, on this occasion there was actually no tsunami - the sirens are faulty.

According to local media, the wave reached as high as three meters (10 feet).

Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, a spokesman at Indonesia's National Disaster Mitigation Agency, said "We are urging the people to remain cautious," "Agencies are still continuing to analyze the root cause ... the Krakatau volcano continues to erupt, which could potentially trigger another tsunami."

Adding weight to his warnings, Sutopo raised the issue of Indonesia's outdated tsunami buoy network which he said hasn't worked properly since 2012. "Vandalism, limited budget, technical damage caused no tsunami (alerts) at this time," he said.
