1) Where did the original story come from?
2) What are the story influences?

Not sure where the original story comes from but the idea that we are in a prison but don't realise it is probably old.
According to wiki, The Twilight Zone tv series was an influence.

I have lots of animals... I understand deus ex machina well on a personal level, but tell me more about your reference to Sun Tsu:

Is it just that you feel the writer was anthropomorphizing Sun Tsu's idea of water seeking lower energy states as a teacher for war strategies?

Or... something more?

Yes, but the idea that we are in a prison so that we might be studied so that we might lead to an answer that the imprisoners cannot discover...

That is the story for which I am looking for the "prior art".

Re: Dark City - 1998 - Did you watch it, Where does the essential story originate?
See, there is all the CIA stupidity surrounding gifted and talented children, etc. Looking for children that have evolved or perhaps just have a better / differently developed perception of fundamental reality.

Cross pollinate this with the stories about the CIA or MJ12 or whatever working with non-human, yet morally conscious beings (aka "aliens") in order to accomplish some unstated objective. In some stories a cooperative objective, in some an alien coerced objective, in still other, an unavoidable collision of seemingly real meta-objectives painted as a thin veneer on simple materialism, animated fate.

My guess is that there is this mass of stupid people, and possibly a mass of stupid aliens as well. These are maybe less stupid and more self-serving. This group is in some way long lived, but not immortal. Immortality is their absolute goal. Being stupid--or just terminally self-serving--they have made it their task to enslave by every means available the non-them populace while looking for their savior(s) among the inmates.

Maybe this is the real essential story line? Are there older versions of it?

It's essential viewing.

Look in to Plato's cave allegory , gnosticism, and Philip K Dick. PKD is an obvious inspiration to these "fake reality" movies.

Ah, duh... the Wachowski film Jupiter Ascending had a similar story line, except the immortals weren't looking for a human savior I think.

It felt like water is the basic element of life, of free wish. I don't think it had a connotation with Sun Tzu, but more with the Noah's Ark. Anyways, great movie about how you are the master of your own ship. There is a thread on GLP about how the elite spills secrets of the the world through Hollywood movies.

Mr Nobody was one of them, as well as Knowing.

I think Dark City was about time inception working backwards, as if the older civilization (past) were predicting our getaway future, like the scene when Kieffer Sutherland implanted memories inside the protagonist in the past to fight against the Dark Men from the future. Sacrifice is also a theme as well as memory loss.

Btw, we shall soon hear about Men in White, as opposed to Men in Black.

There is a rather hilarious scene in the end of this script where an evidently real Christ throws an immortal Hitler (rather, Hitler's son) in a burning nuclear crater...

Not exactly what I was looking for... ;)

Epic movie!

(((They))) probably allowed it to be released, because the Law says that (((They))) must inform us of what (((They))) are, what (((They))) are doing, and what (((They))) intend.

Same thing with the most excellent movie, "They Live."

 Quoting: Shekky Shiller

Right, I forgot about They Live. In that movie, the aliens weren't really looking for an answer so much as trying to stay hidden and sort of use humans as a slave labor force.

They Live was not unlike the Matrix or Dark City, but there was also the "aliens need to figure out humans in order to survive" theme in the latter two. Was that theme at all in They Live? I don't remember.

That film deeply disturbed, and scared the shit out of me.
Some ring of truth in there, I feel.

All that we see or seem is but a dream within a dream.” – Edgar Allan Poe
 Quoting: Spritzer

Your sig line! Hah, that is possibly the best answer in the thread. Crazy!

I am pretty sure that Poe did not have any story that implied aliens living off humans, but of course HG Wells did, and...

I just remembered that some Pueblo tribes claim that the Anasazi (who anthropologists claim disappeared at around 800CE) herded and ate some groups of their Pueblo ancestors.
