Matrix got hyped too much, because the ideas weren't as strikingly original as claimed.

If one does not try to map plot twists on to other movies there are many that shared the same premise, the world as expericensed it not as real as we think ...

Truman Show, 13th Floor, Vanilla Sky come to mind ... and there are many more
It is almost impossible to carry the torch of truth through a crowd without singeing somebody's beard ... or without getting banned

Yes, but none of those shows had the "looking for a savior among the inmates" theme.

The Matrix and Dark City did have that theme. That's the story line I suppose I am looking for.

It's a great movie, better than it's twin, the Matrix. And much better acting. The story is basically from "Simulation and Simulacra" by Boudrigard (sp?). "Simulation and Simulacra" is the book that Neo opens at the beginning of the movie that holds his vr type drug that he sells to those people at the door of his apartment.

1) Where did the original story come from?
2) What are the story influences?

The simple fact that anyone argues about this shit while everyone around me is dying of kidney failure just shows how completely worthless movies are. Oh lookie, humans make moving pictures about serious subjects. While they die from drinking the soft drinks in the big cushy seats.

I was eight years old and running with a dime in my hand
Into the bus stop to pick up a paper for my old man
I'd sit on his lap in that big old Buick and steer as we drove through town
He'd tousle my hair and say son take a good look around this is your hometown
This is your hometown
This is your hometown
This is your hometown

In '65 tension was running high at my high school
There was a lot of fights between the black and white
There was nothing you could do
Two cars at a light on a Saturday night in the back seat there was a gun
Words were passed in a shotgun blast
Troubled times had come to my hometown
My hometown
My hometown
My hometown

Now Main Street's whitewashed windows and vacant stores
Seems like there ain't nobody wants to come down here no more
They're closing down the textile mill across the railroad tracks
Foreman says these jobs are going boys and they ain't coming back to your hometown
Your hometown
Your hometown
Your hometown

Last night me and Kate we laid in bed
talking about getting out
Packing up our bags maybe heading south
I'm thirty-five we got a boy of our own now
Last night I sat him up behind the wheel and said son take a good look around
This is your hometown

Baudrillard.

Editorial Observer; A French Philosopher Talks Back to Hollywood and 'The Matrix'

Most writers would swoon over product placement like this. But Mr. Baudrillard was unimpressed when we conversed by e-mail recently. He noted that the film's ''borrowings'' from his work ''stemmed mostly from misunderstandings'' and suggested that no movie could ever do justice to the themes of this book.

This apocalyptic message owes something to the work of the science-fiction writer Philip K. Dick (1928-82), a cult figure who wrote extensively about the moral problems that result when the distinctions between the natural and synthetic began to blur through cloning, artificial intelligence and android technology.

I remember that Jennifer Connelly was stunningly, achingly beautiful in it, but that's about all I remember. Haven't watched in at least 17-18 years.

I have come to the conclusion that those that cannot not die of kidney failure, must. This, of course, abstracts to every horrifying terminal existence possible. Mass global death due to climate manipulation not the least among the options.

For the tiny remainder*, there is glory in creativity, honor in discovering the answers to endless questions, and, quite unexpectedly, immortality as the last result. So be it.

* Take of them a very few in number, and secure them in the hem at the furthest edge of your tunic. ~ The Eternal speaking to Ezekiel

I guess she was the essential object of desire for "John" who represented the perfect instance of Everyman. So... if that is how you remember her, the director did a good job. :)

Plato's cave allegory which was probably influenced by earlier writings. It is the human condition to accept our surroundings but not quite fully. Always seeking more.

Also, Dark City is one of the greatest. Watch it at least once a year.

I'm not sure they were trying to capture the souls but they were using experiments to see how what makes humans human and how to use that knowledge to turn humans into monsters.

That's what they said about John. He was supposed to turn into a monster by believing himself capable of committing murder. When Voldemort, er sorry the other guy held onto the woman and threatened to kill her, he said I have become the monster you were supposed to become.

At the end John says they were looking in here, tapping his head but they were looking in the wrong place. Why did he not turn into a monster like all the other experiments?

That's what made him different. He could not be turned into a monster because they were messing with his head but humanity is not controlled by mkultra. Free will is something more powerful than that.
