A few years ago i acquired a hand full of old papers. Among them was a bulletin from a County in Kansas announcing a reduction in staff and notifying where people throughout the county had to go to pick up their money from a WPA "special direct relief fund" ($46,000). Dated September ,14th 1935 It was part of the WPA work program . The area was comprised of many very small coal mining camps.
These checks were emergency funds allocated according to need.

Reading the information was a humbling experience.


Also included in the papers was a hand written, 4 page letter(5x7 sheets) written in pencil dated July 26, 1917 from a man to his brother in a neighboring town or nearby camp.
Reading the letter gave me insight into the desperation of the times, and how blessed we all are to live in modern USA.

I've got a Realistic 20W Amp that is 50 years old. Still using it to this day.

Going by Heinlein rules, just my backpack, hammock, tarp, cordage, axe, folding saw, knives, leatherman, cordage, collapsible rod & reel fishing kit, leatherman, assorted gear,and 22 rifle, and possibly my bike. I'm always ready to go camping at the drop of a hat.

I've got a 100 year old pine chest that serves as a coffee table.

It survived all the moves because it's also a good shipping crate.

Agewisi, the oldest thing I have is a grandfather clock made by W.M. Bowen in 1717. As for what I've owned the longest.... my dad's zippo from the early 1970's and my grandmother's tea glasses from the 1960's. I did have, at one point, my grandparents dining room table made by Thomas Jefferson himself.. but it got commandeered by my mother who gave it to her cousin who used it as a woodshop work bench. Such a shame.

Ummmm...Jefferson didn't make furniture.

One thing that was passed on to me after my Dad passed away was a Large tool chest Built by my Grandfather which I never knew handmade. Must weigh in at 2 to 300 pounds. Pain in the ass after lugging it around for all these years. Got to be over a 100+ years old now.

Nothing. Lost everything in divorce and subsequent fallout, including homelessness.

100 percent complete and total loss of everything.

My prize possession, "procured" from the Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston during the Apollo 11 flight. These signs were outside the bldg. where the crew would return to and be quarantined for several days. We were at the center a couple of days after the moon landing while the crew was on it's way back to earth.

No, not fake. We went for a tour. Amazingly, they let people in to look around. We didn't get into Mission Control or anything, that was off limits, but we did get into the auditorium where the press conferences were held. Empty at the time. These metal signs were on ropes strung in between metal posts that were a couple hundred yards out from the bldg.
