Smoking Cannabis reduces blood flow to the brain causing it to age
Smoking Cannabis reduces blood flow to the brain causing it to age by almost three years

Researchers analyzed 62,454 brain scans from 31,227 people to understand brain aging which they defined as reduced blood flow through the organ

A study published in the Journal of Alzheimer's disease indicates that smoking cannabis can increase the age of the brain by an average of three years. The drug was found to age the brain by 2.8 years, making it worse for the mind than both bipolar disorder or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. In schizophrenics, the magnitude of aging was found to be even more significant, with the average found to be four years.

The following questions might be useful for evaluating Dr. Amen's claims:

Do patients treated at the Amen Clinics do better than patients treated by competent professionals who do not use SPECT?

Are the SPECT findings consistent enough that blinded observers could agree on the diagnosis from the scan alone?
What are the rates of false positives and false negatives?
Have the effects of different treatments on the scans actually been compared?

What is "brain balance," and how is it measured?
What does the scan tell us that would change how we treat a patient?

Does Dr. Amen claim that SPECT can help evaluate the patient's "soul"? If so, what gets measured?

Why did Dr. Amen leap into clinical applications, writing for the public, appearing on television, and lecturing about findings that most doctors would consider preliminary?

I believe it is improper to charge thousands of dollars for a test that has not been validated and may not be safe

THC and CBD are both vasodialators, meaning, they increase blood flow by "relaxing" the veins. You see this effect manifested in bloodshot eyes, where the blood vessels have been dialated, causing the eyes to look reddish.

Because of the vasodialation effects, these chemicals have also been found to reduce high blood pressure and hypertension.

------------------------------------------------
Controversial Study Links Cannabis Use to Accelerated Brain Aging

A new study claims cannabis use may cause accelerated brain aging, but experts say the findings appear to “prioritize marketing over science.”

Excerpts:

"A new study has identified cannabis, alcohol, and certain mental disorders as primary drivers of brain aging.

Billed as the largest known brain imaging study, utilizing more than 60,000 SPECT scans, the research looks impressive.

It also supports an enticing prospect: being able to look at images of the brain to see whether or not it’s prematurely aging.

But experts have called the research into question over the methodology, which has a long history of criticism among members of the medical community."

"The controversy

The scientific literature on marijuana and Alzheimer’s is by no means clear cut.

Some studies have identified both THC and CBD — two of the many chemical components found within marijuana — as having potentially beneficial effects on Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Advocates disagree with how the drug is being characterized by Amen.

“There is some exciting preliminary data, based largely on animal models, that components in cannabis can be neuroprotective and may possibly hold keys to addressing the aging process in the brain and/or age-related disorders,” Paul Armentano, the deputy director of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML), told Healthline.

“Obviously, these findings and their implications appear to be opposite of those suggested by Dr. Amen,” Armentano said."

"To say that Amen has a notorious reputation within the medical community would be an understatement.

He’s been called a fraud, a snake oil salesman, and a huckster.

One expert at UCLA’s Brain Research Institute contacted by Healthline said “I have nothing to add beyond what has already been said by others,” and suggested he should be investigated by the medical board.

He declined to comment further. "

So our lad could hardly have picked a LESS reputable source to hang his hat on today. And again, less than three minutes' search turned up NUMEROUS articles in this same vein - in fact, even the POSITIVE articles were cautionary about the findings, and there weren't many of those!

Now, I hope someone will repost this, yesterday's round of truth has me on ignore again, or so he says. And as he says he "never reads walls of text," (AKA he's not smart enough to parse the information we share) I'll post the SECOND study in a second post.

Again, a repost would be appreciated!

Can Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) Help Reduce Alzheimer's?
Written by Dr. Joseph Mercola Fact Checked

Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the compound responsible for marijuana’s psychoactive effects, may offer hope for treating Alzheimer’s disease, according to a study on mice
Rodents with a disease similar to Alzheimer’s were given a synthetic form of THC, which resulted in fewer lost brain cells, 20 percent less sticky plaques in the brain (which are linked to Alzheimer’s) as well as a boost in memory
Alzheimer’s mice given THC did as well on memory tests as healthy mice, while those given a placebo lost some of their memory
Previous research found that a low dose of THC reversed the age-related decline in cognitive performance of older mice; the dose was small enough to avoid any psychoactive effects, yet strong enough to reverse loss of cognitive performance.

Two interesting excerpts:

"THC Improves Memory in Alzheimer’s Mice

The study was interesting in that it found THC — but not cannabidiol (CBD) — to be beneficial on memory function and neuron loss in mice with Alzheimer’s. Cannabidiol is the nonpsychoactive component of cannabis, which has previously been found to offer many benefits for pain relief, seizures and other health conditions."

"THC May Reverse Brain Aging

Researchers of the featured study cautioned that people should not take the results to mean they should light up in order to preserve their brain health. When healthy mice were given THC, they actually had learning difficulties. However, previous research on mice has also found THC to be beneficial for brain health.

One such study, published in Nature Medicine, found that a low dose of THC reversed the age-related decline in cognitive performance of mice aged 12 and 18 months.4 The dose was small enough to avoid any psychoactive effects, yet strong enough to reverse the loss of performance in the old animals (mice typically live to be 2 years old).

Further, gene activity and the molecular profile in the brain tissue of THC-treated mice were that of much younger animals. Specifically, neurons in the hippocampus grew more synaptic spines — points of contact necessary for communication between neurons.

Previous research has also shown that the brain ages much faster in mice who do not have functional receptors for THC, suggesting THC may be involved in the regulation of the aging process.5 The next logical step would be to test marijuana and its compounds in people with Alzheimer’s, but political red tape is holding up the scientific process."

I'm the one you quoted a few weeks back when I pointed out that pain meds actually do not cause a high if you really are in pain. Unless being pain free is a high. And it's true. OxyContin is a miracle drug if used correctly. Too little and no pain relief, too much and a headache will hit you blindside like no other. The right amount and you can live a daily manageable life without any narcotic side effects. If you really are in pain.
I know we are all different and experience the fruits of life in different ways. Aspirin isn't for all and neither is THC.
Despite all the rhetoric on all sides, all I have is my subjective experience. THC made me who I am. I've smoked daily now for 35 years. I'm on zero prescriptions and over 50. A rarity in the US. Never divorced and celebrated our 25th year. Worked hard every single day and still do. Have more money than I need. Have more work than I need. Raised 2 all honor children. Both made it through college. I swim everyday. I walk 3 miles, everyday. I constantly save dogs and cats and make them part of our family. I have set up my own charitable trust and have given away more money to the needy in my town than the local, state and fed government have given them. I literally hate no one and am blessed that I find the good in people before I find the bad. You very well may be talking to the luckiest man in the world and I'm telling you now, you're hurting people more than you're helping them. Pot isn't for all. Smoking daily anything isn't good but they're many alternatives to not smoking which I know you know. More people have died from Tylenol and Advil than from pot, accidents included. Lastly, you should also know the more you push against something the more people will go against you. Mother Teresa once said " I won't go to an anti war protest but I will go to a peace rally!" See the difference?

Re: Smoking Cannabis reduces blood flow to the brain causing it to age

This is a lovely, reasoned response - shame it won't have the slightest impact.

In fact, it probably won't get read, as it's more than one short paragraph - that seems to be about the limit.

I still can't ascertain whether he's trolling or serious and bitter. I'd almost like to believe he's just trolling, between the marijuana and the racial stuff, but you just can't make up so much of the stupid that it types, and the bitter would be hard to feign.

Not sure where that leaves things, and I'd like to hope your words might penetrate, but I wouln't hold my breath for this one.
