If you have children, Silkies are a good choice. They’re naturally tame and friendly. Plus they are great layers and astoundingly cute. I would post a pic if I knew how.

She died last year. never had another that matched her personality. RIP.

I’m sorry! I know it hurts. The neighbors piled firewood on their side of the privacy fence one year. I didn’t know. Their little dog climber it jumped in my yard and I heard the commotion just in time to see it grab my favorite most wonderful little hen and wound her. She died in my arms about 3 min later.

This was 5 yrs ago and I still miss her.

Thanks sweetie. :) it always happens. There can be a dozen chickens in the yard and something will take my favorite. It’s weird. But it’s part of it I guess. Best of luck with your Frizzles. They are pretty cool, their feathers are so pretty. hf

These new chickens are going to be great egg layers.

You got Americauna’s! They are pretty friendly and I love their green and blue eggs. I had a barred hen like your black and white one. One day, I walked into the chicken house and she was sitting against the wall facing outward and another hens chicks were ringed around the front of her. Sitting quietly and relaxed and looking at her.

It was like a mother goose moment! I wish I had snuck up and listened because anyone would think she was telling them a story. So cute. I interrupted it and they all kind of stretched and got up like nothing weird was going on. The secret life of chickens. Lolol! But yeah, your chickens look very healthy and your coop is nice. hf

You’re very welcome my dear! hf

Yeah, I get attached to animals so easily too...we had rescued a baby turkey this summer, it was only couple days old...his name was “little p”, the first two weeks I made him sleep with me cuz he was always crying and he liked my long hair... I made him wear chicken diapers when he was inside the house, I taught him to say “pio, pio”...and he loved having baths, I used my shampoo and conditioner on him...he used to behave like a dog but smarter lol...we kept him outdoors during the day, freely and at nigh he used to come inside the house to sleep in my baby’s room... but one night he did not...
We had little p for three months... I’m still waiting for him to come back...but I’m happy that he grew strong and healthy, and it’s free!

Couple of questions?
How long do they lay eggs for?
What do you do with them after they stop laying? Soup?
 Quoting: Harleyevo

They become military chickens, they visit the Colonel!
Wanted in 48 states, kicked out of the other two!

Re: New chickens on the homestead
Congratulations! I have 9 hens, and I sure love my girls. My kids handled them from day old chicks and they are so sweet and loving. When they are free ranging, they come to my back door and kitchen window to beg for treats. When we walk around the land we are followed everywhere by them and our 2 goats. I kid that we travel in a pack. Lol God bless you and your new hens!

Reason I ask- Im in the burbs of Chicago- we can have up to 7 hens if yard is fenced!
No roosters though..
Im tempted to f*ck with TPTB and get 7 guinea hens. Ya think roosters are loud??
 Quoting: Harleyevo

I keep My roosters in the shed at night and it keeps the noise down quite a lot and the neighbors don't complain.

I had 9 meat birds and I knew I had to butcher them, it was time and I was absolutely terrified the night before,I could not sleep all night worrying about it. I didn’t think I was going to be able to do the deed.
Well my husband dispatched them and I did the rest. Dunked them in water took their feathers off and you know the rest. I was so shocked that it didn’t bother me at all, go figure. Now I have 9 beautiful non-GMO organic birds in my freezer!

And by the way old birds that you have to cook for hours and hours make the absolute best broth in the world!

Re: New chickens on the homestead
A chicken thread! :D Hi fellow Texan thanks for sharing, your chickens are precious.

People who don't have chickens don't realize they actually have personalities of their own and some are rather sweet. They're not just good for eggs. They're really entertaining and you get attached to them like dogs.

We had a black rooster a while back, who I called Blackie Chan. Why? Because the little bastard was devil possessed. He would stalk you and stay in one spot for abnormal periods of time, and he was smart enough to WAIT till your back was turned, then he'd fly into the air and attack you. Every chance he got. His brother was the same. Needless to say they're gone hahaha.

My other favorite (who we believe got eatten, she just dissapeared recently :() fluffy yellow thing, she always followed me. If i left the door open she just walked on it and layed down to take a nap. Open the car door before you go on a ride? She hops in and lays down in the passenger side and falls asleep.

Gosh I love chickens. Free range eggs are best.hfhf

We had a tiny bantam who would viciously attack the red trashcan every time we went out to empty into the trash barrel (back then trash was burned in a barrel in the backyard) It was like being hit with a furby armed with straight razors.

Congrats. Just please be smart about integrating them in with the others .... when the time is right, and carefully monitoring that slow interrogation process.
