Question For Anybody With HVAC Knowledge
So I have an old AC unit but it's still chugging along. My only real problem is that is starting to get a bit low on refrigerant now that it is over a decade old and of course the EPA has decided to ban the type that goes in my unit because of 'global warming'. Yes, I actually had an HVAC tech express their own concerns to me about...global warming...when I rolled my eyes over the issue of it being banned now.

Anyways, so IIRC it's R22 refrigerant and I know that it can no longer be bought, but in the past I had a few guys tell me that it could still be filled but only by R22 that was 'reclaimed' from other older units that had failed and had some left in the system.

But now a recent guy told me that oh no, that's not right and now it can't even be added to my system and that if they remove a system with it, they have to send it to some CIA Guantanamo Bay Level Headquarters for safe disposal (being somewhat sarcastic). But long story short, they claimed it couldn't be topped off or suggested it'd cost a million dollars to do it more or less.

So does anybody know if that's really the case that R22 can no longer be added to my unit? And honestly, fuck regulations, so also do you know if it's possible to just find 'a guy' that will do it even if all the big name companies won't touch it? And obviously, I know 'the guy' wouldn't be able to just buy it, but assuming I could find someone with access to old removed units. etc

Thanks if you can let me know.

Yes r22 is expensive.
Don't spend the money to add anything till they find the leak. It does not get "used" up.
There are some modern compatible refrigerants as well. I'm not an expert though.

Re: Question For Anybody With HVAC Knowledge
If you have a leak, it needs to be sealed, otherwise you will be wasting money adding Freon.
R22 is on its way out, so sooner or later you will need to replace it the unit, as it got too expensive.

If you can afford it, buy a new system.

R22 is a good refrigerant, but they decided to ban it, for b's reasons and force everyone buy new systems.
Unfortunately, there is no substitute, and you can convert it as with R11

R22 is around $20 per pound right now (wholesale), contractors will charge $100 per pound, cause they can. Definitely have them find the leak before pumping in the liquid gold.

He did check for leaks and found a trace amount at the evaporator coil...but shrugs...it's old. I actually watched him wand it and it didn't go off like mad just at some very specific spot but not like a few inches from it. I know it will just get worse over time since it's copper but I really don't want to spend on a whole new unit right now when it's working really well other than that.

When I heard him talking to their sales guy that he wanted to send to give me quotes on buying a new unit I heard him refer to it as a 'slight leak'.

But figured I'd just ask for the straight dope to see what people think. Wish I could just find some old unit pulled out at a junk yard or something before it's 'sent back' to the deep storage environmental savior agency site or whatever :P And just collect some myself but obviously that'd probably just be way harder than I realize and end up getting me harassed by 'authorities'.

So when you say really expensive...you mean like over a thousand bucks to put a bit in it? Obviously it'd be ideal to put that money into a new unit but I just don't want to drop 7 grand + right now.

Anyways thanks for the info.

Yeah I realized it's a much better refrigerant especially after when the sales dude was talking options he said I'd have to have another intake installed because the replacement refrigerant needs a lot more air volume to work as well or the unit will keel over super fast. Sounds....great....

Huh, well that doesn't really sound that expensive. Obviously the 5x price bump does, but I mean overall. Do you know how many pounds a 3-4 ton unit usually holds ideally?

Also, can they even attempt to seal an evaporator coil if it's working fine but just has that slight leak? Or since it's constantly expanding and contracting metal, is that an uphill battle basically?

If you knew the markup up on HVAC equipment you would'nt be so flippant. SIL just installed a new 96% furnace for $1500, go ahead and get a quote for yours.

Sure thing boss. Are you going to be sending the funds over via Paypal or Wire Transfer?

But seriously, you gotta understand that it's hard to make yourself spend over 5 grand on something when your current system heats the house perfectly well and the only reason I know about the issues is because I got an end-of-year discounted 20something point inspection of the unit and air handler since I already know it's old and am trying to be informed about upcoming costs. The guy spent over an hour here and actually wanted me to follow him around so he could tell me the status of each step.

So really I don't understand why you'd feel it would be so wrong to try to get every bit of useable life out of a unit that is granted old with a very small leak but still working fine (I know it's small leak because it was a little low 5 years ago and has never been filled back then and still heats and cools fine).

Or maybe I just triggered you with my filthy R22 talk and you want to save the ozone layer jerkit

Funny enough, actually saw a news article recently that the ozone layer has healed itself from when it supposedly had such a major hole in it and we are using more fossil fuels etc than ever with China about to surpass on usage and whatnot.

Re: Question For Anybody With HVAC Knowledge
Treatments of leak sealant additive are an option and then top up the R22 or changeover to R438, which is a common refrigerant for replacing R22. R22 is a more efficient refrigerant though so you lose a small amount of capacity if you change. Keep in mind that changing refrigerant type is akin to running the wrong oil in your engine.
