No, I think the phone line is about 5.5 mbps. Of course ethernet is the real deal. It's not that hard to wire the house with ethernet.

The "alternative" has been around a long while, its called a Cat5e cabled Ethernet LAN. Try to use telephone lines for your LAN and you may as well go back to 51Kbpx phone modems, which will require also a telephone switching network. Ethernet is far far cheaper. The other option is a fiberoptic network, far more expensive than wired Cat5e cable LAN

Microwave ovens are a totally different animal. They are regulated by the government. The level of radiation they emit is less than the government limit and supposedly cannot be sensed by the body.

WiFi is just as 'dangerous' as cell-phones, microwave ovens and your cordless 2.4ghz portable phone...

Actually less so, as you don't have the tranceiver stuck up against your head...

An alternative is to network with the phone lines wired inside your house. Anyone tried this?

Yes. I have them and I don't know why anyone wastes time with the old technology. The devolo gives 200mb and is just plug and play. Rock solid too. Works really well.

Regardless of whether wireless is a danger, networking via the powerlines is so superior you will never look back.

I am writing this from the toilet. I would not be able to do this if I only had cable. Yeah - its not exactly life or death ...

But for Fuck sakes (if you're a kid don't swear) this world is the biggest piece of shit.

If I die a death by WiFi well then at least it wasn't death by torture or death by boredom. I think I'll also just light up another fag and drink some tap water, have a diet cola and eat a great big pile of soya beans.

Just another opinion I guess.

Anything based on aggressive radio signals.

Re: Health concerns urge Wi-Fi removal
Your typical Cell Tower CDMA Cellular Antenna only radiates about 2 watts. In order for CDMA to maximize the capacity of the spectrum (number of simultaneous calls)power must be kept very low. (reduces the signal noise floor) Essentially more power causes more unwanted interference which reduces the number of cell phones that can be talking at the same time.
I haven't seen alot of Cell techs with cancer (just heavy smokers) however lots of techs with heart problems. Too much fast food , lots of driving (no exercise) and very poor sleep patterns because being on-call.
Improve your diet and exercise, #1 cancer prevention and health cure.

Typical GLP the sky is falling post. It is important to monitor new technology for health effects, but the hysteria is not needed.

Re: Health concerns urge Wi-Fi removal
I saw a report from Austraila (I think it was), where they evacuated the top floors out of health concerns. Pity I don't recall more but I think it was a university building. The thing was they experienced a surge in braincancer among the staff and they made a connection to the array of cell phone antennas sitting at the roof of the building.

There may have been other explanations for the disproportionate high occurence of braincancer among the staff in question, but this was apparantly enough to take this drastic step.

As many remarked, almost no people live in a microwave-free zone nowadays. Everyone get a share of it, regardless of it is indeed harmless as they say or if it produce longterm adverse effects in people.

Maybe it is like when people are subjected to radioactivity, that dose over time matters. I honestly must say I don't know enough to make informed decisions, but based on the "better safe than sorry" heuristics I wired my entire house with good old TP cable some years ago and disengaged the WiFi network. Also got rid of all those wireless phones that you just misplace anyway, the good thing with the wired phones is that they are attached with a cord to the wall plug - just follow the cord and you find the phone :)

My strategy is to keep the total dose as low as I can, I have no reason to trust these wireless technologies to be harmless.

I'm far from an extremist though, I have a cell phone and engage WiFi and wireless tv links when I actually need it etc. Sometimes, maybe too often, convenience wins over the principles I try to enforce...

So an official calls for a review and everybody goes nuts, even though the review hasn't taken place.

There was a program on the BBC about the 'dangers' of wi-fi. It turned out that the so called expert created the device to measure radiation himself and that he sold anti-radiation shields. Hardly independent.

the city i live in Portland, Oregon has put up free wi-fi all across the city, a guy showed me on the power poles next to the transformers are big square units that he said were the wi-fi units, look kind of like air-conditioners, they are every 1000 feet so as to cover the entire city.

hmmmm, i wonder if this is why everyone has been acting strange lately every where i go in this city, kind of scary.

Re: Health concerns urge Wi-Fi removal
this whole concept is fubar

where are the tests and the dead rodents from WIFI??

where are the birth defects??

where are the brain tumors??

well... a link at least to one real health problem would be a start...

meanwhile I'd expect shutting down you WIFI will do nothing at all...

because all your neighbors have them on anyway.

plus keep in mind that 'radio frequency radation' has been leaking into our environment since way before you were born... just that fact that your still alive is evidence that proves beyond a reasonible doubt that WIFI is as safe as 'vitamins', (which no doubt cause cancer in high doses).

If your so worried, trash you TV, computer, MC oven, remove the electric in your house (EM), and put on a lead suit... and will it matter much anyway??

You will feel differently when someone uses your WAP to preform some illegal activity.

You will be the one that has to prove to the authorities that it wasn't you.

This is after your PC's are gone, your house ransacked and your arrest record augmented.

I tend to agree with this, and you can't compare with internet cafes, as they probably position themselves as a "common carrier". I've viewed web logs many a time, and at least in this case, all I see are the IP addresses of the visitors, not the MAC's.

Anyway, I white list the laptops in my house and shut out anyone else, pretty simple.

Its just the corporate world spreading rumors, trying to stop the spread of wi-fi, if internet IS COMPLETELY WI-FI THERE IS NO NEED TO PAY FOR INTERNET, THE ONLY INVESTMENT IS IN THE WI-FI CARD/ANTENNA ITSELF, IT WOULD BE FREE NET.

IF THE WI-FI IS DANGEROUS, WHAT ABOUT TV- COMPUTER SCREENS, AND ESPESCIALLY MOBILEPHONES AND MOBILETOWERS/ANTENNAS?

This is from the UK. There is virtually no talk of this in the US, but there's been talk about mobile phones/towers for quite some time.

All wifis come with encryption features to block freeloaders. It is up to the user to use them.

There's no comparison with other electronics, because wifi acts like a missile (it shoots the waves as far as possible and at great velocity), and nonstop.

03 Jun 2007

LONDON, June 3 - After a warning from a government watchdog group, schools and families in Britain are scrambling to remove Wi-Fi systems.

In April, a chief health watchdog official called for a "timely" review of Wi-Fi technology and its possible radiation effects, the Independent on Sunday reported. Since then, the public reportedly has rushed to remove Wi-Fi systems, particularly from elementary schools. Will Foot of London-based Scooter Computer said he had never seen such a reaction.

One London resident said she removed Wi-Fi systems from her home after having strange symptoms like unexplained lethargy. She told the British newspaper she no longer suffers after the removal of the systems from her home. She is now urging her children's schools to remove the systems, the Independent reported.

Re: Health concerns urge Wi-Fi removal
The main reason I wired my house was the fact that most of our family were and are still using laptops, sitting for countless hours with these machines using them as they are built to be used - lap placement, just inches away from reproductive organs.

The heat is bad enough (for guys at least), I didn't want the prolonged microwave exposure to make it worse no matter how low the intensity as counted in mW or whatever. You need a power cord most of the times anyway, another wire is no trouble at all if you have network contacts at all potential places where people need network access.

It is all about risk management, at least to a certain extent. In the car I never take a call without the BT handsfree. When I don't need the BT service it is turned off. That is rational behavior.

I always wear my cell phone on me since I need to have it at all times, never turn it off. That is a conditioned behavior, an imagined need to always be available that is cleverly induced in me. It is not a real need. When I sleep I use it as alarm clock a few feet from my head. That is clearly irrational and stupid behavior as I see it, there are non-radiating alarm clocks or I could put in in flight mode. I'm too tired for bothering about that at bedtime and besides they say it is harmless...

It really hurts to see this erratic behavior in people like myself. And yes, I've heard all about those blood-brain barrier experiments on mice and know about the effects of low-intensity microwave exposure. In mice, notably.

Re: Health concerns urge Wi-Fi removal
I am very concerned about San Francisco wanting the whole city to be wired for wifi - I think it is really f-k'd up because it is gonna fry the city! They just put a wifi tower a half block away. They inform you and let you go to a meeting about it, but if you say, " I hear these are dangerous" they just ignore you or say it isn't true. The last meeting i went to, I could tell the organizers were ignoring me, so I asked if I sent alot of info about the dangers, would it make any difference in whether they would put up the towers and they said no.

So they have these meetings just to placate the neighborhood, but they could care less about our health

I don't understand why mayor gaving newsome wants to do this. He should know how bad these signals are.... aren't democrats any smarter than that?! Why aren't the lefties protesting this more??
