Your typical Cell Tower CDMA Cellular Antenna only radiates about 2 watts. In order for CDMA to maximize the capacity of the spectrum (number of simultaneous calls)power must be kept very low. (reduces the signal noise floor) Essentially more power causes more unwanted interference which reduces the number of cell phones that can be talking at the same time.

I saw a report from Austraila (I think it was), where they evacuated the top floors out of health concerns. Pity I don't recall more but I think it was a university building. The thing was they experienced a surge in braincancer among the staff and they made a connection to the array of cell phone antennas sitting at the roof of the building.

There may have been other explanations for the disproportionate high occurence of braincancer among the staff in question, but this was apparantly enough to take this drastic step.

As many remarked, almost no people live in a microwave-free zone nowadays. Everyone get a share of it, regardless of it is indeed harmless as they say or if it produce longterm adverse effects in people.

Maybe it is like when people are subjected to radioactivity, that dose over time matters. I honestly must say I don't know enough to make informed decisions, but based on the "better safe than sorry" heuristics I wired my entire house with good old TP cable some years ago and disengaged the WiFi network. Also got rid of all those wireless phones that you just misplace anyway, the good thing with the wired phones is that they are attached with a cord to the wall plug - just follow the cord and you find the phone :)

My strategy is to keep the total dose as low as I can, I have no reason to trust these wireless technologies to be harmless.

I'm far from an extremist though, I have a cell phone and engage WiFi and wireless tv links when I actually need it etc. Sometimes, maybe too often, convenience wins over the principles I try to enforce...

There was a program on the BBC about the 'dangers' of wi-fi. It turned out that the so called expert created the device to measure radiation himself and that he sold anti-radiation shields. Hardly independent.

the city i live in Portland, Oregon has put up free wi-fi all across the city, a guy showed me on the power poles next to the transformers are big square units that he said were the wi-fi units, look kind of like air-conditioners, they are every 1000 feet so as to cover the entire city.

I tend to agree with this, and you can't compare with internet cafes, as they probably position themselves as a "common carrier". I've viewed web logs many a time, and at least in this case, all I see are the IP addresses of the visitors, not the MAC's.

Anyway, I white list the laptops in my house and shut out anyone else, pretty simple.

All wifis come with encryption features to block freeloaders. It is up to the user to use them.

There's no comparison with other electronics, because wifi acts like a missile (it shoots the waves as far as possible and at great velocity), and nonstop.

The main reason I wired my house was the fact that most of our family were and are still using laptops, sitting for countless hours with these machines using them as they are built to be used - lap placement, just inches away from reproductive organs.

The heat is bad enough (for guys at least), I didn't want the prolonged microwave exposure to make it worse no matter how low the intensity as counted in mW or whatever. You need a power cord most of the times anyway, another wire is no trouble at all if you have network contacts at all potential places where people need network access.

It is all about risk management, at least to a certain extent. In the car I never take a call without the BT handsfree. When I don't need the BT service it is turned off. That is rational behavior.

I always wear my cell phone on me since I need to have it at all times, never turn it off. That is a conditioned behavior, an imagined need to always be available that is cleverly induced in me. It is not a real need. When I sleep I use it as alarm clock a few feet from my head. That is clearly irrational and stupid behavior as I see it, there are non-radiating alarm clocks or I could put in in flight mode. I'm too tired for bothering about that at bedtime and besides they say it is harmless...

It really hurts to see this erratic behavior in people like myself. And yes, I've heard all about those blood-brain barrier experiments on mice and know about the effects of low-intensity microwave exposure. In mice, notably.
