UK and Europe weather chaos latest: 26 deaths, thousands trapped. TRIPLE polar vortex bringing HEAVY SNOW (updates in OP)

Temperatures in Greece have hit record lows and Athens has seen a rare dusting of snow, as deadly winter weather continues to pummel Europe.

Northern Greece saw an all-time low of -23C on Tuesday, which was recorded in the city of Florina, disrupting roads, rail and bus services.

Heavy rain and snow was also reported on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus, which is more used to protracted periods of drought.

In Germany the army has been mobilized to clean the roofs in danger to collapse. It could be a disaster for many houses and official buildings, like schools, kindergardens and public swimming pools when its starts to rain or to melt and all of a sudden the snow weights 10 times as much.

I'm over in Cumbria and we haven't seen a flake of snow all winter! I'd love it if it snowed but it's usually too mild here. We get the flooding instead lol ( well not me as I live atop a hill ).
Luckily, I'm a prepper , so when the low land floods all around and I am marooned, I always have plenty food.

Snow brings parts of Europe to standstill

Heavy snowfalls brought chaos to parts of Germany and Sweden on Friday, leaving roads blocked, trains halted and schools shut.

The front of a Swiss hotel was hit by an avalanche and a winter storm made roads impassable in Sweden and Norway.

...in Austria, three metres of snow fell in some parts in previous days.

"Such quantities of snow above 800m altitude only happen once every 30 to 100 years," said Alexander Radlherr from Austria's Central Institution for Meteorology and Geodynamics.

Roads in the Berchtesgaden area close to the Austrian border were blocked and the army sent up to 200 soldiers to help hundreds of people caught up in the snow.

The Austrian military sent helicopters to blow snow off treetops to reduce the risk of trees falling on roads and rails.

In Sweden wintry storms ravaged parts of the north. One area recorded winds of 49.7m per second (111mph) as Storm Jan ravaged Stekenjokk near the Norwegian border.

Conditions on Friday were particularly treacherous in Bavaria, where the local broadcaster said snowfalls were paralysing public life.

It's still snowing there as of yesterday I think. This snow fall isn't a good thing. Lots of houses and other property are going to be utterly destroyed both by the snow itself and inevitable avalanches, but think of what will happen when the temperatures shoot up into Sprint time temps in two or three days' time like it happens fairly often here in America. Massive, massive flooding everywhere. This doom is just beginning for Austria and the nearby areas.

I can certainly feel it where I live. The weather is awful. I am on the other side of the Channel from the U.K.

Give it time. All models agree on a change in the weather by next Friday.

Snow, Ice and freezing conditions will ensue.

Well, if the forecasters are to be believed then these colder and snowier than usual conditions could continue for quite some time longer yet. And yes all it needs then is a fairly mild day/s at the start of spring and there will be big trouble.

Not a drop of snow here in Newcastle.. but then again, I don't think we are going to get it this year... it's too freezing cold with wintry showers and icing over for snow...

Need a lttle bit of humidity for it to snow...maybe in feb-March?...

Things can change sooner than you think. Take last year's 'beast from the east' for instance.

A high pressure block, with dry, settled conditions, can suddenly shift north bringing the deep cold, and very likely snowy conditions right over us.

Some have seen 3 times their normal January snowfall already, but after a bit of a respite in Austria and southern Germany, there's more heavy #snow to come - especially through tonight and into tomorrow.

At least 26 people have died in weather-related incidents across the continent as freezing weather has taken hold.

A huge avalanche has smashed into a hotel in southern Germany after snow across Europe caused more deaths.

The building in the village of Balderschwang was badly damaged but nobody was injured in the incident.

Brigitte Kloepf, a spokeswoman for Oberallgaeu regional authorities, said the hotel was evacuated and 100 guests were taken to nearby buildings.

About 1,100 people are unable to leave Balderschwang, near the Austrian border, because of an avalanche-risk on roads following days of intense snowfall, Ms Kloepf said.

Authorities in parts of Austria, Germany and Switzerland have warned that further snow and rainfall is raising the risk of avalanches, and increasing the weight on snow-laden roofs.

its supposed to finally start freezing here starting the coming weekend.

im still hoping for that one time where i suddenly dont have to go to work simply because i cant..

Snowing here today! :-).. very heavily too.. NE England, Newcastle...although, its only 4 inch's thick here atm but it's still going...

Railways are off and some public transport aren't running.. buses, taxis etc..
Workload is at home today for me then...
