Re: I'm Trying To Get Into Metal Music, What's A Good First Step Artist Wise?
You want to start out with a history lesson on metal or you want to skip to nuMetal?
Look around, is this the end that you have foreseen?
The pain, the misery in us all
What was it that you knew?
Will we one day learn it too?
And together build another way, to the morning
Or will it ever come again?
You've poisoned all our hopes
We have nothing now, and what of the children?
What has this done to them?
Damn you for the pain that they must feel...

Here's some decent examples of different metal genres:

Power metal:

Doom metal:

Death Metal:

Black metal:

Grindcore:

Folk metal:

Viking metal:

There's a lot more genres besides, these are just a few bands I listen to most frequently, all fairly old as I'm not really much of a fan of new stuff.

Tool are known to be the best in the business basically.

My favourite metal album of all time is Leviathan by Mastodon.

Just been a fan 25 years or so, started on the usual, Pantera, Sepultura, Slayer, have about 1500 cd and vinyl albums, sold a hell of a lot more on ebay a few years ago, mainly my rarer stuff that I'd collected over the years, and got great prices for them, that Absurd album, their very first, and was utterly terrible I managed to sell on bids for over £80.

In my teens and twenties I was a huge collector, and would pick up anything interesting I saw at gigs or at Kensington Market or Camden, used to go to a lot of signings as well, or take albums along to gigs to get them signed. I was well connected amongst the London metal scene, so always knew a promotor or venue owner and ended up meeting the bands 8/10.

I really enjoyed those years, met loads of people I still meet up with, less frequently, but still the friendship is there.

Deary me...

Most of the gigs in London, at the LA2, The Underworld, The Highbury Garage, The Borderine, The Marquee, you could more often than not catch up with the bands at the bar, walk right up to them and they'd be happy to have a little chat with the fans.

I've still got the pick Kerry King gave me, when I got my face split open during Angel of Death at the Astoria in 1998, and lots of other little bits of memorabilia. I have lots of set lists and tickets in a ring binder, along with corresponding articles from Kerrang, Metal Hammer and Terrorizer, and even have a piece of paper with LG Petrov's home address on, as my band had just done a demo tape, I saw them at The Camden Barfly, and managed to mention it to him, to which he asked me to send him a copy after I drunkenly pestered him for a support slot. Never heard back, but still a cool little interaction.

Got tons of little moments like that, that no metal fan now would ever have, the scene was so much better in the 90/2000's.

You failed to name many of the founders of those genres.

Amorphis is the only one that fits on that list.

You sound like the typical Metallica/slayer fan with no other musical taste.

Do you shop at hot topic? You list that you have picks of slayer and magazines you sound like you listen to country but have to prove to us you listen to metal.

Metal is a very, very broad genre with lots of different 'flavors' ranging from, say, Black Sabbath to Cannibal Corpse. You're going to have to narrow it down some.

Not sure what your problem is, I only posted examples of bands I personally enjoy..

Sure I could post loads of Candlemass, Bathory, Celtic Frost, Nocturnus, Autopsy, etc songs, I could personally write a several hundred page post on the origins and originators of every single genre, but I won't because it would be boring and a waste of time.

I posted songs I enjoyed, nothing more, nothing less, there were no claims of anything else.
