Popular movies before and after 9/11
I watched the movie "Snake Eyes" for the first time yesterday, and realized it has been a long time since I've seen a good conspiracy movie. I was confused why it had such negative reviews, considering it was one of the better movies I have seen in a while.

Then I realized that ever since 9/11, it seems critics destroy any sort of story that suggests a deep rabbithole conspiracy of a plot, exposing respected elite members within the story. It makes sense- why would TPTB want the masses to consume art that may motivate them to question what they have otherwise been told?

I googled "popular conspiracy movies" and noticed that Google gives you a lengthy list of different movies in the genre. You can do this with all sorts of genres. I'm a data engineer for work and decided to build a web scraper program that could fetch data from these google results.

I exported the results to Excel and snipped a screenshot for you.

It lists the genre, and how many popular movies of each genre came out both before and after 9/11. You can double-check this work by googling "popular GENRE movies"

For all the genres that declined after 9/11, I analyzed the years to find out which decade featured the genre's peak climax. The 1990s would be the most telling decade for implicating that the 9/11 attacks may have effected our culture's popular movies. If the genre was most popular in 1990-2000, but declined after 2001, it's more likely 9/11 has something to do with it.

If a genre dropped in an early decade, or is still popular in the 2000s, then clearly the attacks had no effect on their popularity.

Surely enough, the results proved my theory correct. Popular conspiracy movies have declined 56% since 9/11, with their most popular decade being the 1990s.

Wow, nice work.

All those trends make sense to me. No wonder I despise most movies lately.

Funny that escapism in the 70s was disaster flicks (Airport stands out, personally) and now it's fantasy.

I wonder what role the FX capabilities have to do with that, or if it's more of a cultural shift.

I am so done with action super hero movies, well since i was even 12 years of age..

I just cant imagine a Grown ass man sitting down and watching a movie of a super human..I do admit i watched Iron man,and Logan..but all the millions of movies since has stopped me from going to the movies since..

I rather watch real life movie action with odd twist at the end..

with torrents and things like that i can download any movie i want i go through all the movies..and i am like ..i dont want to see any of these ..None..i scroll and scroll and scroll..The mule ,was alright..and The house jack built..was alright..

But i suppose all the Real writers went into Cable shows ..thats where the real fun stuff to watch ..But even those now are pushing this homo crap all the time..and its soo old now its just like ,whatever..i dont want to see relationships, like soaps...i want real life action!...

FX definitely had an effect on the rise of action and super hero movies.

I also think maybe people are burnt out on disaster flicks post-2k and 2012. They're better than ever with the FX, too.

I only watch those for the FX, the writing is still horrible for those movies. Think you have to go back to like the 70s for ok stories when it comes to disaster flicks.

Another thing that I think has affected it all is the games we have these days, the games are better than most movies becaude you can interactive and run the plot yourself.

Terminator, Matrix, Dark City and I Robot all seem to exist on the same time line.

Very nice OP. I guess I had intuited something along those lines, but you've made it concrete. Nice job.
