I started walking not long ago. Not for the same reason. To protest something. Had no idea what would happen. My pack weighed 20# and I'm a woman. Started out near provo Ut. I must have gone 10 miles before stopping. I was sopping wet with sweat and the temperatures were plummeting. I got a little scared. Laughed it off. Wasn't hitch hiking because I never have and seems like a terrible idea. A truck pulled off the road ahead of me as I made my way towards the mountains. He offered me a ride. I made sure he knew I had no intention of getting into any kind of sexual situation with him and even offered him money. I got all the way to west Texas. It was amazing. I had a blast, saw some cool stuff. If life seems that terrible, walk away. Whatever it takes. Just be careful. Im a lucky person. I read people well and always have backup plans.
