I agree with all the people who said Whitney Houston and Karen Carpenter. Janis Joplin was an incredible soul singer, but that's just not my type of music.
I'll also mention that wherever in the world I go, if I'm at a store where background music is playing, and Karen Carpenter's voice comes over the speakers, people will stop what they're doing to listen.
I would also like to add Ann Wilson of Heart to the list.
