SpaceX to fire 10% of staff, bracing for ‘extraordinarily difficult times ahead’ – report
Elon Musk’s rocket company SpaceX is going to slash its nearly 6,000-stong workforce by 10 percent in an effort to become “leaner,” the company said in a statement cited by media.

“To continue delivering for our customers and to succeed in developing interplanetary spacecraft and a global space-based internet, SpaceX must become a leaner company,” an email from the company president and chief operating officer, Gwynne Shotwell, read, according to the Los Angeles Times. “This action is taken only due to the extraordinarily difficult challenges ahead and would not otherwise be necessary,” it reportedly added.

However, there are more than 400 open positions in various fields at different SpaceX facilities, judging by the company’s website.

Probably just one of those sneaky moves where they fire people and then take on cheaper people.

In the end, when you pay peanuts, you get monkeys.

This is a diversionary tactic. These "space tourist" companies have been using them for years. No one gets to space unless you're part of the deception. Now they can delay the fact that no one goes to space and blame it on lack of funding and manpower. This has been going on for thirty years. All promises and no orgasm. Nothing new....rant

They just finished launching the last of the 75 Iridium Next satellites which was the biggest contract of it's kind ever, so I guess there is some downsizing to do now.

Yep, that's life in a tech company. You live by the contract.

When looking at engineering pay, keep that in mind. An engineer is seen as a commodity. They've even been called "commodity" in the military contracting business.

I wonder what Trump will do. He may make it easier for H1B's, or harder. Either one is possible from what he said in his tweet.

I am pretty sure this is a nothing burger. Most of Space X's business contracts are with the US government and various branches of the military, since the government is shut down that means that Space X is not getting paid, so they are taking a big financial hit and have to downsize.

10% is nothing, the place I work has been doing 10% layoffs each of the 10+ years I've been there... it's called dropping the dead weight. they will be hiring at the same time... GE first came up with this model to get rid of bottom 10% each year...

Blue Origin is a dark horse that has real potential to challenge SpaceX. SpaceX is dumping a lot into R&D for the Falcon Super Heavy and Starship projects. This after having just finished development of the Falcon 9 and wrapping up development of Crew Dragon. They're dominating the global launch market commercially, but their business model demands that they continue that trend. Reusable rockets make more sense the more you reuse them.

Meanwhile Blue Origin's BE-4 methalox engine has been selected by ULA to be the engine for the first stage of their Vulcan rocket, a replacement for the Atlas V. At the same time, Blue Origin is planning to use the same BE-4 engine for their own reusable rocket, New Glenn. Right now SpaceX has the monopoly on cheap reusable rockets, but that won't be the case forever. Once Blue Origin starts cutting into their market share I doubt they'll be able to keep funneling profits into more R&D. SpaceX has put incredible pressure on the old guard of rocketry, but Blue Origin could start putting pressure on them if their New Glenn rocket is a success.

Also, Blue Origin won half a billion dollars to develop their New Glenn rocket as part of a Launch Service Agreement contract from the Air Force, which is required to stop using Russian-made rocket engines by 2022 (the Atlas V is currently powered using engines made in Russia). ULA also won nearly a billion dollars in that same contract to develop their Vulcan rocket. SpaceX was not given any award at all for the development of their Super Heavy Falcon (though they haven't confirmed whether they placed a bid or not). That means they are continuing to shoulder all of the development costs themselves. I could be wrong, but I would not be surprised if SpaceX did place a bid for that contract and had to slash their payroll when they didn't win anything.

I believe Falcon Super Heavy is critical for their future success, but development will be incredibly expensive for them. The Falcon 9 reigns as king right now, launching more payloads to orbit last year than any other single type of rocket anywhere in the world. If Blue Origin comes on the scene in 2021 with New Glenn and offers more payload to orbit with an easier-to-reuse rocket at cheaper prices, SpaceX will have a hard time maintaining their dominance unless their own Super Heavy rocket is at or near completion. Falcon Heavy can compete with New Glenn on paper, but given the complexity of that rocket I doubt it will be as affordable. No one is talking about them as a serious threat to SpaceX right now, but no one was talking about SpaceX as a serious threat to ULA and other titans of spaceflight 10 years ago. Having disrupted the launch industry themselves, I think SpaceX is wise to keep things as lean as they can and move as quickly as they can to stay ahead of the competition.
