Walgreen's reducing stock at some stores, why?
Around the time of hurricane Irma, I couldn't find a BC powder I like that my Walgreens always carried. Then there were other things missing, I spoke with manager and he said corporate ordered them to reduce stock by something like 25-35% in order to "advertise" with cardboard panels over that area.

The managers were not happy about it, as of course, that reduces sales. I had another Walgreen employee also tell me it was to "simplify" products in order to not confuse the elderly with so many choices, hah, right.

This little "advertising" scheme was only being done at select stores. Personally, I don't buy it. Makes no sense to me. Now I have to drive twice as far to the other Walgreens that's not participating in this bizarre plan.

Today, I noticed the Rimmel makeup is now missing in the participating store, replaced with an "advertising" cardboard panel, very cheesy, makes no sense.

Maybe someone has some info on this. I know one of the ones that is reducing stock is on a major road, perhaps they are getting ready for something? I believe they are in contract with FEMA along with Walmart for disaster services.

Hard times. Less productive stores carry less stock. They cover up the empty space with signs.

Floor inventory in January.

No, this is a permanent reduction, started last over a year ago. They have put cardboard "advertising" panels in place of all this merchandise.

Interesting, funny, that's the first thing my mom said, was maybe they're not doing well and are going to start closing stores....

I know for a while there they were fighting CVS, corner by corner, if there was a CVS, then there was a Walgreens.

Could be, but just seems weird the story on the super busy main highway has their stock cut, but the one on the less busy road does not.

This happens all over the place. It usually happens to dull stores that are already lacking in sales to push product to more productive stores. It means that store is on "the list" if you get my meaning.

I have heard about this too. people talk about where to get stuff.

personally, Walgreens is worse than a manure pit. maybe a local chain is better for you?

Seriously Jake? I haven't heard this before. Actually today, I drove by one CVS that looked like it had closed, then I stopped in another that was normally very busy, hardly anyone there now.

This CVS had almost an entire aisle empty, still had tons of Christmas/holiday stuff, NOT putting it on sale. Stuff was super overpriced compared to Walgreens, on average by a dollar or two, so I really hope they don't replace Walgreens, that would truly suck.

I just don't know why people would prefer CVS, overall their prices are quite a lot higher than Walgreens, and then their selection not so good, at least to me.

I feel their pain, pretty much every month I find something new that I like that either they don't carry anymore, or I have to resort to buying their oversized container so I can pay more, OR they just create a more inferior product.

Like Velveeta for example, was pretty good growing up, couldn't figure out why it's been tasting spoiled lately and just not that great, well that was yet another thing they changed the recipe one.

Don't even get me started on Breyer's ice cream, er, that doesn't melt anymore:

Re: Walgreen's reducing stock at some stores, why?
Major retailers are continuously analyzing and changing product assortments based on optimizing sales and margins. They spend millions upon millions sorting through data in a number of different ways, (algorithms, artificial intelligence, statistical analysis, etc.) to try to put the right product in the right places.

They don't always get it right, but its part of the business. That said, some retailers will lower inventory right before year end for tax and financial reporting purposes or when the store is about to be closed.

I've worked with CVS, Walgreens and Rite-Aid in the past specifically around data optimization and supply chain----this is standard business.

Nothing to see here folks.....

I hear what you're saying, but actually my post is talking about a reduction that happened over a year ago and continues, not year end inventory adjustment, not to say it's some big national emergency, just an observation.

For the record, Walgreen's bought out Rite Aid. It's been a slow transition. As for stock.... getting rid of Christmas inventory, preparing for V-Day.

Re: Walgreen's reducing stock at some stores, why?
I prefer Walgreen over CVS if I need something other than prescription drugs. but use a local mom/pop store for prescriptions. You not get the personalized treatment from a national brand store that you can local pharmacist that knows you and your family and their medical history.

Example.
My Mother in law had day surgery last month and the doctor sent her home with a prescription for some pain meds that she needed because the type surgery she had was painful.
My wife went to CVS to get her prescriptions filled. They would not fill it because at 1st they said she was not authorized to get her moms stuff which she was and when she proved it they then said they would not fill them because she had a prescription filled last month from a different doctor for a much weaker pain pill. The refused to do anything until they contacted both doctors. (it was after 7pm by then and they told my wife to come back in the morning) My wife was getting real upset because her mom was in legit pain. I told her to just get the the prescription and walk out. We then stopped at the mom/pop place that I have used for 30 years. I went in and explained what happened to my pharmacist and he filled it for her with no problems.

Back to the topic at hand about Walgreens stock. I noticed that the local one I shop at has removed to rows of shelves completely and just moved the remaining ones further apart.

I noticed that the Walgreen's closest to me did not have very many Christmas items as usual...I thought perhaps they were going to close as it was that bad.

No one seems to know and I have yet to speak to the Manager..I notice too that their orders are not kept up and they run out of many items that are staples.

I really think they just went overboard opening so many stores so close to each other..There are two Walgreens within three blocks from me..The second one gets all the traffic as it is very close to the subway station and they get the customers coming or going.

The one across the street from me used to be open 24 hours. Now, as of a few months ago it opens at six a.m. til 12 a.m...so who knows.
