His trick (aside from craftsmanship) was being at all the festivals until he found someone that'd play his axe on stage, even for a song or two, or approach a player after the show and ask their opinion. Eventually he got some known names playing his brand & he churns 2 or 3 out a year by his hand and couldn't be happier about it. His setup is fascinating, custom jigs galore after 20 years of doing it. Good luck, I hope you find as much reward from it. ![]() |

As far eBay goes, right now I’d rather stick to kits offered by known kit makers to be safe. I’ll definitely check out kits on eBay to see what’s out there as I’m still in the research phase. Right now I’ve got a little project going to make some coasters out of 1/8” rosewood to practice cutting inlays. Out from the belly of a whale came a prophet, Amen! |

Good idea to purchase some kits in order to get a 'feel' for part of the process of construction. I suggest that you get a kit(s) online from Thommann. They are a brilliant company that make a generic line of guitars that punch well above their weight, considering the price. Or you could buy some pencils. I saw this video a few weeks ago, the finished guitar is played around the 8 minute mark. |

Quoting: Lacey Underall I have not tried to build an acoustic guitar, those would be alot more complicated. I’m seriously thinking about using a warmoth neck and body. I’ll be doing the fretboard inlays myself. Is the Warmoth stuff high quality? Based on their pricing they believe their stuff is pretty high quality. Very high quality, I like being able to pick a neck that has just what I want on it. I have a Tele, swamp ash body, birds-eye maple neck with compound radius finderboard, with a 50's style large boat neck. |

Quoting: Lacey Underall I’m thinking of doing a start style first, but I’m going to do a mahogany neck and body with a maple top like a Les Paul. Going to do an Ibanez wizard neck with a compound radius. I was pricing out some options and it’s going to be pretty pricy for just the neck/body but it looks to be worth it. Not sure on the bridge and pickups yet but I’m going to do humbuckers and a hardtail because I don’t like the strat tremolos or single coils. Out from the belly of a whale came a prophet, Amen! |

Quoting: Sutton Coldfield I mainly play metal/hard rock and strat style single coils just don’t give me that big meaty sound I’m looking for, they always sounded thin and weak with lots of overdrive in my opinion. They are great for cleaner style tones but that isn’t my thing. I do love P-90s though, I have an SG with P-90s and they have a pretty beefy sound but they definitely have their own sound, especially with some fuzz. I just wasn't sure if it was something 'technical'. Who doesn't like P90s? I like all PUPs (as I said), and I'm going to buy a pretty cheap SSH within the next couple of weeks. I reckon that having both will be great for what I play, which is not metal. |

Quoting: Lacey Underall Yes, I’ve done that with three different guitars. My last and best project was an ESP EC-1000, one just like at this link: [link to www.sweetwater.com (secure)] Except I got it on sale for $600 at the local Sam Ash. I got rid of all the gold hardware and blacked it out with Schaller locking tuners and Schaller bridge. Got rid of the EMGs and put a Dimarzio Super Distortion in the bridge and I can’t remember but I think a Seymour Duncan ‘59 in the neck. Out from the belly of a whale came a prophet, Amen! |

I could never build an acoustic, I would blow a blood vessel. On a solid body, you just take parts out, and the new parts usually fit into the same screw holes. For shielding, you buy some copper foil, and just glue into all the cavities and behind the pickguard. And just a little soldering. Last Edited by StopsniffinmeBrandon on 01/19/2019 12:33 AM |

I blew a blood vessel imagining doing the things that you just said. The reason I entered this thread was because I love hearing about people doing these things that I can't do. I will continue paying to get my gear modded by others, as my act is a registered business and my accountant claims the cost of it back. If I remember correctly (from another thread), OP is a pro or a semi pro. I am a pro as well. I say this just to illustrate how differently we go about the same business. I don't understand most of the finer details of the gear that I use, the complete opposite of OP and his vast knowledge of it. |
