Child porn ringleader stabbed and beaten to death by fellow inmates in prison

A New York man sentenced to 40 years in prison as the leader of a child pornography ring died after a fight involving seven inmates at a federal detention center in Michigan, authorities said Friday.

Christian Maire was involved in an “altercation” Wednesday at the Milan detention center, about 50 miles southwest of Detroit, the U.S. Bureau of Prisons said.

No details of the fight were released. But the government said Maire’s death was being investigated as a homicide. He was from Binghamton, New York. Three other inmates had serious injuries, and two staff members had minor injuries.

Men are housed at the center while awaiting trial, sentencing or a permanent prison assignment after being sentenced in federal court. It’s on the grounds of the low-security Milan federal prison.

A Broome County man accused of leading an internet-based child exploitation group is among nine suspects indicted by a federal grand jury in Michigan.

Christian Maire, 39, of Port Dickinson, was arrested by the FBI and federal prosecutors in October during an investigation into alleged solicitation of underage girls to engage in sexual acts. Authorities said they followed an online trail that began with one victim's testimony in Oakland, Michigan, and spanned several states.

On Tuesday, a federal grand jury handed up a 10-count indictment against Maire and eight co-defendants: Arthur Simpatico, 46, of Mississauga, Ontario; Jonathan Negroni Rodriguez, 36, of West Hollywood, California; Michal Figura, 35, of Swarthmore, Pennylvania; Odell Ortega, 36, of Virginia Gardens, Florida; Brett Sinta, 35, of Hickory, North Carolina; Caleb Young, 38, of Olmsted Falls, Ohio; Daniel Walton, 33, of Saginaw, Texas; and William T. Phillips, 39, of Highland, New York.

The indictment charges felony counts of child exploitation enterprise, conspiracy to produce child pornography, production of child pornography, coercion and enticement of a minor, and conspiracy access with intent to view child pornography.

Three girls under the age of 18 — one lives in Michigan, one lives in Canada, another lives in Oklahama — are referenced as victims in the indictment.
