It's because the gas expelled from rocket is pushing against other gas expelled from the rocket. It's like 2 people falling off a cliff, you can push against him as you both fall and you'll be able to influence your vertical position. Even in a vacuum this would still work.

It has to do with pressure increasing from sub sonic to trans sonic as it is constricted going through the nozzle building pressure perpendicular to the longitude of escaping gasses. That force convert on the walls of the constricting device to propel the vehicle forward since it can't go back into the combustion chamber. It only has one way to escape... Out the back and that differential pressure force pushes the vehicle forward.  So you are saying that a rocket can only work in space with a nozzle?
