Communism/socialism is about the people coming together in solidarity against the invader who tries to exploit. So the socialist states when threatened with interference from imperialist intervention in their country, (as they would put it), would be much more willing to put aside their dissatisfaction with their any pre-existing dismal internal situation to fight against the enemy trying to meddle in their internal affairs.

Therefore, Trump could have made a mistake in publicly backing the opposition Guaido against Maduro. Venezuela could have ended up imploding by the end of the year, and it might still do that, but as I see it Trump hasn't done himself any favours. There will be more Venezuelans keen to support Maduro than there was before Trump opened his big mouth.
