In January 2010, inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency visiting a nuclear plant in Natanz, Iran, noted with puzzlement that the centrifuges used to enrich uranium were failing. Interestingly, the Iranian technicians who replaced the machines also seemed amazed.

The phenomenon was repeated five months later in the country, but this time experts could detect the cause: a malicious computer virus.

The "worm" - now known as Stuxnet - took control of 1,000 machines involved in the production of nuclear materials and instructed them to self-destruct .

It was the first time that a cyber attack managed to damage the infrastructure of the "real world".

During the analysis of the worm, the analysts made a surprising discovery, says Gordon Corera, correspondent of security issues of the BBC. The highly advanced code of Stuxnet had been designed with a war mentality.

How did a computer worm physically damage 1,000 machines in a nuclear plant? We explain it to you in four steps:

1- Stuxnet penetrated the network

According to cybersecurity firm Symantec, Stuxnet probably arrived at Iran's Natanz nuclear program on an infected USB stick.

Someone would have had to physically insert the USB to a computer connected to the network. The worm thus penetrated the computer system of the plant.

2- The worm spread through computers

Once inside the computer system, Stuxnet looked for the software that controls the machines called centrifuges.

Centrifuges rotate at high speeds to separate components. At the Natanz plant, the centrifuges were separating the different types of uranium, to isolate the enriched uranium that is critical for both energy and nuclear weapons.

3- Stuxnet reprogrammed the centrifuges

The worm found the software that controls the centrifuges and inserted itself into it, taking control of the machines.

Stuxnet carried out two different attacks. First, it caused the centrifuges to spin dangerously fast, for about 15 minutes, before returning to normal speed. Then, about a month later, he decelerated the centrifuges for about 50 minutes. This was repeated on several occasions for several months . . . .

Due to the power outage at the Venalum factory today, Almost all of Venezuela’s industrial aluminium production is gone. As the factory had to turn off their equipment and shut down, the molten metal in the production cells solidified which destroyed them.

Venezuela Now 24 Hours In Darkness; Maduro Blames US "Electricity War"

The nation-wide blackout quickly turned into a blame-game over who's at fault, with many in the opposition blaming the Maduro government's mismanagement and notorious corruption, and with pro-regime voices blaming right-wing saboteurs taking orders from the United States.

Caracas has even gone so far to point the finger at Florida Republican Senator Marco Rubio, who only yesterday as part of a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing said that the US should promote “widespread unrest” in order to bring down the Maduro government. Though offering no specific proof Caracas officials accused the US and opposition activists of causing "pandemonium" for several days, culminating in the blackout.

President Nicolas Maduro gave brief public acknowledgement of the outage on Twitter, saying, “The electricity war declared and directed by the imperialist United States against our people will be overcome!” and added, “No one can defeat the people of Bolivar and Chavez. Maximum unity patriots!”
