The transformers are filled with dielectric mineral oil (was PCB oil prior to ~1979) that is circulated to keep them cool. The oil is combustible so when they explode/burn the copper windings and the very important coatings are destroyed. Nothing but scrap at this point.

Sorry, I am calling Bravo-Sierra on anywhere near 100% of the power being restored. I worked the grid for a while many years ago. They probably lost an easy $100mil++ in very large transformers and distribution equipment and they had all of those expensive pieces of equipment tucked away in storage? Then were able to remove all of the massive burned out transformers and then replaced them in 24 hours? Really? Or they have a super sophisticated double loop system where everything is redundant? They may be able to “generate” power again but the distribution is fooked. Its evening there, show me the lights and the people dancing in the streets in celebration. For their sake, I wish it were true.

Unfortunately, that is specialty equipment designed for the specific system. The lead time is months and most is made in either Germany of S. Korea. Very little is ever kept as "backup" due to the very large cost. Its one of the problems that makes all of the modern grids very vulnerable.
