US sanctions are an 'attempt against our lives,' Venezuela's petroleum minister says

Venezuelan Petroleum Minister Manuel Quevedo has denounced U.S. sanctions against Caracas as a "direct attack" on its citizens.

His comments come at a time when the oil-rich, but cash-poor, country is suffering the Western Hemisphere's worst humanitarian crisis in recent memory.

"The powers of the United States are out in front of this attack," Quevedo told CNBC at the Joint Ministerial Monitoring Committee Meeting (JMMC) in Baku, Azerbaijan on Monday.

"With a political objective, they are trying to economically choke our country, our people, and appropriate our petroleum wealth."

UN Concerned by US Sanctions’ Possible Impact on Venezuelan People

The United Nations is worried that the latest sanctions against Venezuela's oil sector will lead to greater economic deterioration in that country and will further affect people's well-being, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet said on Wednesday.

Florida House urges Congress to take steps on Venezuela

The Florida House is sending a message to Congress to intensify sanctions against Venezuela and to hold President Nicolas Maduro accountable for human rights violations.

The resolution also asks Congress to pressure Venezuela to allow the delivery of humanitarian assistance to the country.

The resolution doesn't have to be approved by the governor. A similar resolution has one more committee stop in the Senate before being considered by the full chamber.
