US to Impose Venezuela-Like Sanctions on Nicaragua if Necessary - Pompeo

The United States could impose sanctions against the Nicaraguan government if it poses a similar threat as Venezuela, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Wednesday during a congressional hearing.

"If the threat is similar and the risks are similar, we will respond in a similar fashion", Pompeo told the House of Representatives' Foreign Affairs Committee when asked if the United States is willing to put sanctions on Nicaragua as it did against Venezuela.

This is Caracas right now. The only place where lights are on is Petare, the largest slum in Latin America. The great blackout continues in Venezuela.

Using a metric of internet connectivity it looks like about 66% of the power is off and possibly still dropping again.

It was about 50-60% before this latest drop.

edit: I meant 50-60% restored, now its like 33% with power

MOSCOW — Russia has scoffed at the U.S. demand to withdraw its military personnel from Venezuela, saying that their presence in the country is fully legitimate.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in a statement late Tuesday that the presence of Russian military personnel in Venezuela is "in strict accordance" with the Venezuelan constitution and a bilateral agreement on military cooperation. She said that it doesn't require any approval by Venezuela's opposition-controlled National Assembly.

Zakharova did not say how many Russia military experts have gone to Venezuela, but news reports indicated that two Russian planes delivered about 100 servicemen and 35 tons of cargo to Venezuela over the weekend.

Guaido announces Venezuela-wide 'tactical action' against Maduro

US-backed Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido has announced "tactical actions" by his supporters will begin next week after a nationwide protest, part of his "Operation Freedom" designed to topple President Nicolas Maduro.

The ominously vague "tactical action" relies on the organization of so-called "Aid and Freedom Committees," according to a tweet from Guaido which scheduled the event for April 6. The committees, planned civilian "freedom cells" he set up across Venezuela with the help of opposition lawmakers in recent weeks, will supposedly rise up when he gives the signal, ultimately marching on the Miraflores presidential palace – where President Maduro has stubbornly remained despite Guaido's self-coronation in January.
