Everyone having a lazy Sunday? Or are you out shopping?

I have a late start thanks to crazy sleeping habits, but am headed soon to the shower and then out among the peoples of my little town looking to see what can be had prior to prices lifting into the stratosphere.

I've been sick since Wednesday night. Took two days off work. Wife started getting it Friday night. She's taking tomorrow off.

All in all, a crappy, crappy weekend.
 Quoting: Riff-Raff

Riff-Raff, I'm so sorry! Is it a cold? Flu? Hard to tell the difference, of course. What a sad week-ending and week-end for you! Really sorry. Glad you are a bit better but now you will worry about your wife - bless both of you!
 Quoting: Pooka

It was either a mild flu or a really bad URI. Fever got up to 102 at its worst. Still not back 100% yet.

Had a great time again??

edit: You must have been exhausted, or very tipsy! See you manana!

-----------

Yup, had a good time. But not tipsy...tired & hungry.

I never eat or drink alcohol at the casino...they make you sluggish & I want my wits about me while gaming.

That's why I come home with a couple hundred extra rather than losing all my money :)

I wont even go to the casino on a full stomach.

And the biggest rule of them all...I bring what I can afford to lose...and not a penny more! & NEVER get extra money while at the casino!!!

If I lost it all...I walk out the door.
If I am going to be damned...I am going to be damned for who I really am!

That's a pretty high temp for an adult. Have you been drinking lots of liquids? That's important, to help wash it out and to help you recover.

So sorry you had to experience that! How is your wife doing?

Thread: NEW VENEZUELA BLACKOUT (9PM CST March 25) 90 percent GONE

Do you suppose they were smart enough to fill some water jugs while the power was on?

Edit: I should be a bit more constructive.

My point is prepping is an ongoing thing.

If I lived in venezuela, I would have had water stored...and I would have refilled it the instant the power came back on.

I'll bet all the non-preppers there thought it was all over when the power came back on...now they find themselves in the same BAD situation.

They should have acted when they had the chance!!!

Absolutely correct! Start the washing machine and fill all water containers - unless in one of the places where oil came through the water pipes. Might be able to get a load of clothes done while filling water.

Much easier to dry laundry in whatever mishmash way is necessary, than to try to wash it similarly.

edited to say: Priorities certainly do show quickly, don't they? LOL I love fresh clothing and even enjoy doing laundry - thus it would be my priority right next to having water on hand in quantity.

Yesterday I purchased two new plumbing plungers prepared to do laundry in a bucket if necessary. For wringing, a mop bucket with wringer would be ideal. Wash in the bucket with the plunger, wring, repeat to rinse, wring, hang wherever you can. In inclement weather - hope you have a couple old-fashioned wooden clothes racks. If not, just string clotheslines in the least-used room. Clothespins on hand, of course, to save you work.

I don't think it has been discussed in this thread but is anyone thought about prepping with improvised weapons (if needed)

(it does match the subject of this thread including items that could be used for weapons for those who can not afford a gun, or maybe live in an area where they are prohibited.)

Here's one article on that topic I ran across today:

Improvised Weapons for Preppers

"Not every prepper is gun happy, or has a gun as part of their every day carry. For that matter, not everyone is legally allowed to own a gun (the 1968 Gun Control Act prohibits certain people from possessing firearms), and who knows what the future will bring on gun ownership!"

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
AC77408350, this article has some amazing ideas! Clever as can be! Loving the "tootsie-pop stick" - one of our very dear members here who will remain nameless lives in an area where not only are no weapons at all allowed, but anything that could be used as a weapon could mean arrest and prosecution. I do believe our friend could carry candy without persecution - sorry - meant prosecution, along with some other great possibilities here.

No doubt that individual, along with the rest of us, could be in possession of a good flashlight without attracting undue attention - sweet ideas here for that!

I am generally impressed with this article and thank you very much for bringing it to our attention!!

One more thing - I am in possession of bear spray - you know - a person cannot calculate when there might be a bear encounter. I lived in the country, with quite a tweaker population, when I purchased it. I actually invited a deputy sheriff to come by and chat with me about the use - legality for self defense, safety, effectiveness, etc.

The deputy was delightful, and actually encouraged me to have it on hand and use as necessary. Bears do come around occasionally, here and there. He said to be very careful about wind, as this is a windy area which could cause blow-back on me. Said the spray would keep a man - I meant bear - down long enough for a deputy to arrive, and I lived some miles from anywhere at that point.

For those who don't feel good about having a conventional weapon, or cannot for whatever reason, bear spray might be a good solution, or rather, one of them.

Thank you again, AC! I'm going to return to devouring more of the article!

Uses of Vaseline:

Helps get zippers unstuck.
One way to use petroleum jelly to survive is to help you with your gear in inclement weather. With Petroleum Jelly you can lubricate zippers on tents, pillowcases, duvet covers, sweat shirts, pants and jackets to ensure they pull smoothly and you stay warm. Petroleum Jelly is handy around the tent, but also your home.

Chapstick is another handy survival tool because it contains
Petroleum Jelly. If you don't have Vaseline, look for your lipbalm to lubricate the zippers that get stuck.

Use of Vaseline: Gets rid of a sticky mess.
Improvise use of petroleum jelly to get rid of a sticky problem, such as resins on your hands.

Vaseline to clean hands. Clean dirty sticky hands. Your hands will feel soft, but it's not a moisturizer. The reason your hands will feel soft is that the Vaselin traps the moisture that would escape from your hands.

Petroleum jelly will remove gum stuck to hair or wood. Using Vaseline you can apply and work to slide off the gum.

An unusual use of Vaseline is for pest control.
Traps flies. Flies in the Vaseline ~ it's a song and a method for pest removal. Make a fly trap with paper and petroleum. Here's how: layer petroleum jelly to paper strips and hang. Bugs land and can't fly away or tear their legs trying to get out of the sticky problem.

Curbs the ants problem. Keeps the ants away from your pet's food. When you mark the territory around the pet food with petroleum jelly and it will act as an invisible border.

Carpenter bees. Filling in the paint cracks and holes is the best way to keep carpenter bees from destroying your house.

Vaseline lets you "shave" without water! While most use petroleum jelly as an aftershave application to soothe legs and face, if you are without water, you can use petroleum jelly to shave. Then just wipe legs or face clean with a towel. We recommend you try coconut oil or shea butter before you use petroleum jelly, but if you have no other options then use the Vasoline.

Vaseline use: Prepper First Aid.
Vaseline has a melting point that's just above body temperature, and so it literally just melts into skin, between cells and gaps a lipid barrier. It creates a barrier to lock in moisture and simultaneously protects from the drying elements. Because of these properties, petroleum jelly has many uses for first aid and beauty when applied topically:

Helps stitches heal better after surgery.
Vaseline helps protect skin when applied after minor cuts,
scrapes, and burns in absence of a topical antibiotic, such as Neosporin or Polysporin or if you are allergic to either of those medicines.

Vaseline protects skin from wind burn and chapping to counter cold weather conditions. To help heal chapped hands,
load a generous portion on hands, then cover hands with gloves or mittens to keep them moistened for 20-minutes.

Vaseline softens rough heels and elbows with petroleum
jelly. By night, apply petroleum jelly to feet and cover with socks and you'll wake to softer feet.

Vaseline relieves dry, itchy skin (eczema). Prevents diaper rash. (For diaper rash, use hospital grade white petroleum jelly, pictured right.) Guards against windburn.

NOTE: Do NOT use petroleum jelly on burn wounds, as the
product will provide a barrier and trap bacteria.

Survival Uses of a bandanna

Bandannas are a survival tool.
The humble bandanna is an icon of the American cowboy and of
the scouting community and for good reason: a bandanna is a
survival tool.

Webster's defines the bandanna as a square piece of cloth with just two basic uses (a head and a neck covering), but we have happy news for Webster's, because we've come up with more than 130 survival uses for a bandanna!

As a multi-functional item, bandannas are prized by scouts,
hunters, homesteaders, preppers and survivalists alike for their survival uses. Below are some of the many survival uses of a bandanna from a prepper's perspective...

Bandanna use #1-15: Clothing.
Clothing is one of the most basic survival uses of a bandanna. This is one versatile clothing item. Used to hide your identity, a bandanna can help you can look like Rosie the Riveter, a bandit, a cowboy, a gangster, or even Maryann from Gilligan's island.

Here's how to use a bandanna as clothing:
1: Wear as a belt to cinch clothing at the waste.
2: Protect ears as earmuffs in cold or windy weather.
3: Collect sweat as a headband or sweatband bracelet.
4: Keep hair tied (as for fire building or to cool neck).
5: Cuff leg as a gaiter to keep legs warm and dry from damp
conditions or to minimize tick and chigger exposure.
6: Cover neck to keep, cold, wind and rain out (or keep you from being a red neck!)
7: Cover head to prevent heatstroke or sunburn (especially for those balding or who have thin hair).
8: Line a hat or helmet to make more comfortable, protect
against sweat or make it fit better.
9: Add a layer of warmth to neck in cold weather.
10: Wear over a hat to keep it from flying away in the wind.
11: Cinch your boots if your shoe lace fails and you're stuck without paracord.
12: Shield hands from the cold (makeshift gloves).
13: Make a dress for girls from a couple of bandannas. The same principal could be applied to making a halter top.
14: Repair clothing as a knee or elbow patch.
15: Improvised apron.

Bandanna Uses 16-30: Cooking and eating.
Another overlooked use of a bandanna is for cooking and eating.
With a bandanna you can:
16: Improvise a dishrag or sponge.
17: Dry off as a towel.
18. Use as washcloth.
19: Keep your knife clean.
20: Wipe as a napkin.
21: Keep food out of the dirt as a place mat.
22: Prevent burns as a potholder
23: Strain or filter food (clean berries, or filter pasta or coffee).
24: Cover food (to help keep away flies).
25: Wear as a hobo pack to collect edibles.
26: Sit upon (a place to sit in the dust or in a damp location).
27: Lunch liner (hold sandwiches and snacks in lieu of plastic bags).
28: Use as a bacon grease catch
29: Use it as a firestarter after using it to catch grease
30: Taking the bitterness from acorns.
31: Hold a bottle or your picnic Japanese style.

Bandanna Use #32: For concealing.
One survival use of bandanna is that it can help you conceal. With a bandanna you can conceal just about anything ~ whether you have a nefarious purpose or otherwise. While traveling you can conceal an extra biscuit, muffin, pastry or cookie from the buffet, for example, to take on the road. If it makes you feel better, take bite then use the bandanna as a doggie bag. Food should never go to waste..

Bandanna Use #33-38: As Cordage.
One of the main survival uses of a bandanna in an emergency is as cordage. There are many ways to use a bandanna for cordage:
33: Tie equipment to trees or tent.
34: Strap gear to backpacks.
35: Make a pouch to protect or carry loose gear.
36: Make snares.
37: Bridle a horse.
38: Lashing (a cord used to fasten anything securely).

NOTE: While bandannas are an excellent material for cordage if you don't have any other suitable material, your bandanna won't do you any good if you don't know how to tie knots. Be sure to get a bandanna with knot tying-instructions printed directly on them if you are not familiar with them. Having instructions certainly will help the novice.

Bandanna Use #39-48: For comfort.
Comfort can provide an edge on survival and a bandanna can
help. A bandanna can help in many ways on the homestead or
bugging out in off-grid life and in a survival situation it can help:
39: Keep dirt, dust and wind from nose and mouth as a dust mask.
40: Mask foul smells (death and sewage).
41: Comfort head to rest or sleep (as a pillow cover for clothes).
42: Whisk away mosquitoes, flies and other insects.
43: Mitigate chafing (repetitive friction with backpack).
44: Rest by day (place over face to shade from sun).
45: Clean sunglasses or eyeglasses to increase visibility.
46: Tether a walking stick to your hand.
47: Wipe your teeth if you don't have a toothbrush.
48. Improvise a work glove (wrap your palm for heavy axe work).

Bandanna use #49-50: For your firearms.
With a bandanna you can also:
49: Improvise a gun cloth or cleaning patch.
50: Create a makeshift rifle sling.

Bandanna Use #51-57: For fire starting and candle burning.
51 Use as tinder (cut it in little pieces).
52: Tie together a fire bundle or gather natural tinder.
53: Soak it in oil or Vaseline and use as fire starter or candle wick.
54: Make a char cloth.
55: Keep hair neat for fire building or food making.
56: Pad your hand for making fire with a bow drill.

In the link in the above post on bandanas, there are far more uses for the bandana - by all means read them and make note of what seems most useful to you.

After reading their suggestions on purchasing "survival" bandanas, I went to eBay and found many. The recommended one with knots, of course, and many others. What great possessions these bandanas would be, when SHTF, with instructions for all manner of thing, not taking up space, great for other uses between reading them for instructions.

Might be a good thing to request for birthday, Christmas, and other gift-giving occasions!

Found warnings of things NOT to buy at Dollar stores and this seems important:

Flush the temptation to buy the toilet paper. It's always filled with unhealthy powders to bulk the roll into looking like there's more on the tube.

Common sense never expires! Watch the expiration dates and the dollar stores. Even hydrogen peroxide and bleach has an expiration date. Spices also expire! Don't buy anything that won't last at least a year.

Steer clear of the "seedy" deals. Don't get suckered into
buying seeds. Sure, they're just .25 cents, but they may not plant in the Spring and they might be GMO. Instead, buy Burpee seeds, which are made in the U.S.A. Go heirloom and
plant survival seeds.

My note: even Home Depot has heirloom seeds. Almost any store which carries seeds now has an heirloom section.

Heirloom seeds are those which you can use to save seeds each year for next year's crop. Non-heirloom seeds, if saved, will not grow true to type the next year and waste your work and garden space.

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
eBay has toilet seats and lids that snap onto five gallon buckets for about $10.

[Now I just need to buy a VW to place the bucket on, to spare my knees]

Don't forget cat litter unless you have easy access to sawdust or some other appropriate substance.

Remember the bags, lots of them, that go in the bucket, under the seat, and over the edge of the bucket.

The fact that the seat snaps onto the bucket will spare many falls and sideways slips.

Okay, done with this subject now.

I'd like to remind everyone of the tremendous nutritional value of V8 juice in our stocks. We will need that added nutrition, and it will make us feel much better, help protect our good health, as well as sharpen our minds.

It's a very good value, even in the small cans. I recommend purchasing a considerable amount- whatever you can - and drinking at least one can per day when under stress conditions. That would mean being ill, even today, and especially after the SHTF.

It's insurance, donchano?

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
Just read in two different places that pineapple juice keeps well in cans - like for eight years. Very interesting and not what I expected, as more acid things usually have a shorter shelf life, such as tomatoes and tomato juice.

Wouldn't pineapple juice be a great treat when faced with food boredom, wishing for all things normal again, and desperate for something sweet? Sounds heavenly! Believe I will!

Another good thing to have on hand is V8 Splash drinks. These have antioxidants, Vitamin C, and other good things, as well as fruits and at least one vegetable, but taste heavenly. Another good thing to put away.
