Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
Did anyone see an ugly post on a new page here, that disappeared? Still trying to understand what happened, and that's usually the reason for a page disappearing with the message No Longer Exists.

You all should be aware that bleach has a set shelf life, I'd invest in pool shock if I were you. Any stored water is going to taste funny because it has no air, add you bleach and then slosh it back and forth between 2 containers for a better taste. Don't forget the Berkey filters (I actually won mine (the Imperial) on a FB post)

Don't forget that you can oven can, crackers, flour, pancake mix, rice etc

and Augason farms is having a 40% off sale on all #10 cans, yeah that sale came up after Wyatt's doom post so he cost me 13 cans of food lol
 Quoting: Serepta Ann

I read about the pool stuff, but not sure what kind to buy as there are apparently a couple kinds and one is ok and the other is not. Have you any advice on the type to buy?

I would love to stuck up on #10 cans, but live in ny in a tiny studio and space is very limited. I have a little padding, so I can hang for a while with low food rations, but I drink a gallon a water a day and I need it, so water is my biggest concern.

Also, people look at me strangely for this, but EVERY type of grass is edible. You cannot digest the grass, but you can chew it and swallow the juice which is remarkably nutritious. Doing this all day long can sustain you for a while if there is nothing else to eat.

You can also get water out of a wild grape vine plant (not grape vines like a vineyard), plentiful around these parts

When you mention "these parts" you might tell us in general terms where "these parts" are. Perhaps someone just moved to your area and don't know about wild grapes.

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
I have been using a cheap $3 solar/mains rechargeable torch for about a yr. So cheap that the mains part broke after first use lol, however, it is constantly charging in the light and it has been incredibly useful as we get so many power cuts here (daily).

Anyway food preps here are flour, rice, salt, sugar.
The locals grow wheat when not rice and grind for flour and we have sugar cane also nrby.
A useful book on wild edibles would also be handy. Most crops n lots of veg grows wild if you know what to look for. The local women from poorer households are out everyday foraging in the roadsides and by the river for spinach, garlic and other leaf veg, spices n herbs, plus flowers and nettles for eating. It seems crazy but when you see a guy pushing his stall in the city loaded with stinging nettles (same old common nettles the world over) and a que (lol) to buy it then it must be good eating!
I'm considering buying a wind up radio also, just in case shtf scenario hf

Useful thread!
We are used to power outages here, i will see what i can come up with for tips.
 Quoting: curry nosher

Right now, if you have a little corner of your yard that gets sunshine, or even a tub you can poke holes into and put dirt in, when you have garlic or onions which have begun to sprout, just bury them so that the dirt covers their shoulders by about an inch. They'll continue to grow and their leaves can provide the garlic or onion flavor to add into salads or soups.

Great idea about the surplus stores - they have very surprising things sometimes.

don't be so quick to kill them.

They need water as much as we do and if they are living there, they have a natural source of water.

Actually that is really good advice.

You need more leverage. Small metal bar, duck taped to the end. Might allow you to use your Palm more than just fingers. Regular can openers are great too, but I have the worst luck with them. They always stop working soon after I get them.

Let's remember to have a Bible at the ready - that is a tremendous source of comfort and explanation. I would not want to be without mine. If space is the issue, at least have a New Testament in your backpack. You don't know when you might want/need it, even if it is not something you read regularly now.

Make your own Vitamin C powder.

One of our delightful members posted this earlier and I just now copied it for myself - excellent information which we will need.

The article mentions that what we are currently using is contaminated. I would readily believe that. I would also question GMO content of the whole fruits we are now able to purchase. Anybody know about GMO in citrus fruits?

* Next, decant the clarified contaminated water into a clean container, then add the bleach. Use the table below to determine how much bleach to add—it depends on how much water you are treating.

* Allow the treated water to stand for 30 minutes. Properly treated water should have a slight chlorine odor.

* If there’s no chlorine odor, then you need to repeat the treatment. Just add the same amount of bleach, and wait for another 15 minutes. Check again for the chlorine odor before drinking the water.

Amount of Clear Water Amount of Clorox® Regular-Bleach Amount of New Concentrated Clorox® Regular-Bleach
1 quart 2 drops 2 drops
1 gallon 8 drops 6 drops
2 gallons 16 drops 12 drops, or 1/8 teaspoon
5 gallons 40 drops 30 drops

Here are some other important things to remember.

* ONLY use Clorox® Regular Bleach2 or new Concentrated® Clorox® Regular Bleach2. DO NOT use the Scented bleaches, High Efficiency bleach, Splash-Less bleach, Clorox® Ultimate Care Bleach, or the Clorox® Bleach Pen Gel.

* Use bleach that was purchased in the last 4 months.

* If the water you want to treat is cloudy and you can’t decant or filter it, add twice the amount of bleach recommended above.
 Quoting: Mental Case

Bleach goes bad in four to six months. Then what? I recommend pool shock - never goes bad in the dry form, always ready to use.
 Quoting: Pooka

I use Colloidal Silver instead of bleach. I make it myself for dirt cheap. Just add a tablespoon to every gallon of water.

I use 55 gallon food grade barrels for water. I just add a quart of colloidal silver to each barrel.

That's an incredible price! How did you store it to keep bugs out?
 Quoting: Pooka

Storing ground flour is almost impossible, it goes rancid so quickly (less than a month). Whole wheat can be stored in a 5 gallon bucket for years if it is nitrogen packed and sealed.

To use the wheat, it can be soaked in water, then "ground" easily in a blender for bread, pancake, cracker making. This system obviates the need for yeast when you get the hang of it.

[link to www.weedemandreap.com (secure)]
 Quoting: Anymous Cowboy

But you need a HEAVY-DUTY blender. And electricity.

Or, a hand-crank grinder. Use that for a while and you'll have upper arms like Hulk Hogan.
 Quoting: Eggcellently Deplorable

bring your flour home, stick it in the freezer for a couple of days, then oven can it, easy peasy
 Quoting: Serepta Ann

Right. Oven can, dry can. Same thing. As I said in my original about this method, I have only done rice and oats this way, but I see no reason you couldn't do other things that aren't moist. Talked to a friend and they did their jerky this way.
goofy thum

Here's the link someone else posted to a plant that is very helpful in controlling blood sugars in type 2 diabetes at least:

[link to www.ticotimes.net]

As to the pool shock, it sodium hypochlorite. A 1/4 teaspoon to 2 liters of water. Shake dissolve, let stand for half an hour and it's safe to drink.

So, for people who aren't already prepping, I'd like to make a couple of suggestions.

The very first thing you need to do, is determine if you are bugging in or bugging out. And, in my opinion, get a bug out bag (BOB) together for your car. If you don't have a car, the presumption would be you're in a city and use public transport....So you will want one at your home, because you probably will want to leave the city.

If you're bugged in like we are, you want a BOB in your cars. Even 20 miles to travel on foot could be very tough depending on population or weather and/or physical issues.

The next thing to do is to get at least one month's worth of food and water to wherever you plan to ride out the problem.

You have to have food, water, shelter, ways to purify water, heat food and keep warm, tools to protect yourself and your stuff from those who would try to take it, and methods to keep clean enough to be healthy.

So, my recommendation is to get really clear on your plan. Then get a month of supplies together, and just keep adding a little every week or two as you go a long.

If money isn't an issue for you, that is wonderful!

Go ahead and buy a whole year of Wise Foods or some such (several companies have stackable containers) with low input meal requirements. And get several Life Straws as well. Even living here on our small farm, if money weren't an issue, I would get that just for ease and peace of mind. Lol.

Pooka, I envision the need for the heading post to be given basically chapter headings. Like Chapter one, Bug Out Bags, maybe that video someone posted, really good info there! The chapter 2, Water, and purification. Three, food storage and plans, four, first aid, and vitamin mineral needs, then self defense....Etc. Like that.

Your call! hf

You need to have adequate supply of all that beforehand.

Don't wait, get on it tomorrow first thing. I have read that you have 1/2 hour to get out before roads clog and roadblocks are in place.

You've got a great plan, but your timing needs work. LOL
 Quoting: Lily o' the Valley

I would strongly discourage anyone from going out after an event occurs unless your vehicle is already prepared and all you have to do is grab kids and coats and run. Even then - I wouldn't want to chance it. If I had a plan to go elsewhere I would be in prayer, on GLP, and checking my senses, looking for the slightest sign it's time to go. Wyatte was wise in leaving immediately. But he was ready - that's the big thing.

Better to have a way to go to your bug-out place BEFORE TSHTF, and just watch carefully and pray about what and when and how long.

If planning to shelter in place, when TSHTF go NOWHERE. Whatever you have in your dwelling is what you are going to have, period. If you go out, you may well not get home.

A post recently mentioned how to go out, get money, what to clear from stores, etc. In a way it makes sense but only in isolated geographical areas - a tiny town with only a couple stores, for example. Do not even consider a city - stay home and away from people. The panic will threaten you and again, you may not get home.

That's why we are all talking about what to do TODAY to prepare for tomorrow.

You are a day late. Do some now, I am already Done. The day after nothing will work!!!

You need to have adequate supply of all that beforehand.

Don't wait, get on it tomorrow first thing. I have read that you have 1/2 hour to get out before roads clog and roadblocks are in place.

You've got a great plan, but your timing needs work. LOL

Believe me, I am. I wrote that for someone who is not, and has little or no money.

Excellent idea. I've had rice, even white rice, ww flour, crackers all go rancid. I had some saltines that were 2 or 3 years old, took a bite of one to test it, and it had gone rancid so bad it burned my mouth. I spit it out and rinsed my mouth.

Those fold up plastic rain ponchos.

The cost about $2 and MAN O MAN do they come in handy when needed!

It has saved 2 of my fishing trips!

I can't imagine how handy it would come in during an emergency!

They are tiny when folded up, weight an ounce or 2...I keep one in my truck, tackel box, and bug out bag.
