Think your power will always be there? This should make you think.
Thread: Firefighters injured in Surprise explosion
 Quoting: LookingInward

LI, not sure of your reference between this explosion and being without power, though of course and EMP or CME will figure always in our preparations.

Always very glad to have new information here and new ideas to examine.
 Quoting: Pooka

I was just pointing out that that explosion could have knocked out power. Could it have been a terrorist? I just look at things with open eyes. Remember Ft. Lauderdale?

There so many things that can totally disrupt your way of life. You can't be ready for all of them. You can be a bit more ready if you remain flexible. I read this thread and see so many of you trying to prep your way to having a life as we know it now. There is a very small chance of that happening.

Think of those people fleeing the turmoil in places like Venezuela, the middle east, etc. What if that happened in your area? I would say that most of those people are just common folk. They were out of options.

Another point I want to make, with tensions running high and everyone being offended it only needs a spark to become something like the Ferguson riots. What if rioting were nationwide? What if you are bugging in in a city that is on fire?

Let's say you are prepped for most scenarios. Word of a biological hazard is coming. Or there is a major environtal hazard? I guess the point I am trying to make is that you need to have prepped in the knowledge department. Know how to survive with your own two hands.

If something sent the world back to the stoneage, how long do you think your prep items will last? Knives and guns wear out. I am not saying it would be a useless endeavor to prep. I am not saying to give up on having a few weeks worth of food on hand.

There is no way of knowing from which direction the trouble will come. Be flexible. Adapt. Have an awareness of what is going on around you so you have an option ready to step up and be implemented when called for. If your gut tells you to do something, don't hesitate. You can't hear your gut in a state of shock or panic.
 Quoting: LookingInward

Looking inward, what you have written here is exactly right, and should be the tent over the top of any preparations made by any person.

We definitely DO NOT KNOW what is coming, what we will be forced to deal with. I think most of us here have accepted the future could bring any one or more of all the things we consider, and also things we could not have imagined.

I don't think we, or at least I, expect life to go on the way it is - that's what I would like - to stay here, to make use of what I have prepared with, and be able to continue this way until something else opens up.

My trust is in God. Even today, I ask Him what preparations to make, what to purchase, what He would have me do. It is my belief that if I live through the first of what is to come, I will be shown the next step, and I don't believe it will be here at home. I have things to offer a group - knowledge more than food or other commodities. I know how to garden, to sew, to do a number of things, which would make me desirable in a community, as long as they understood my physical limitations. I can do the sewing, but would have to direct the gardening, for example.

I don't expect life to continue as it is, and I am glad you brought this up. If anyone here does, I am unaware. However, I do know that all who have written on the subject are considering every possible event that we know of. I don't believe anyone, for example, expects power to continue arriving at our outlets, nor water to come through our pipes. We, or at least I, don't even expect my plumbing to take away what it should, for any length of time.

No, life will change completely, and so will priorities. Survival will be effortful, and everything we have done today toward that eventuality will be of great help.

For example, I have a plan that if I cannot stay here, I will go to an area in the woods, far away from any city, and take with me what I can, including the little butane stove for cooking and whatever butane I have at the time, using it the least possible as I look for items with which to build a rocket stove. That's just an example, but perhaps it carries the flavor to you of knowing it will be hard, but having ways to make the adjustments a little easier.

I'm really glad you posted this, LI! Bless you for it! If you have any questions I could perhaps answer, please ask!

How are you prepared? That is, what do you anticipate, and in what manner are you prepared for it? Going to shelter in place, or do you have a community to join, or how do you expect to handle this?

I am alone, and that's a very bad position, especially for a woman, yet I can rely on God to manage things His way, which is always the best since He is the only one who knows the future. Perhaps there is someone out there who will want to join me for mutual support. I just trust God and keep putting one foot in front of the other, preparing as best I can, listening to the advice of others in case they have wisdom I need, and sharing everything I know in case it will help someone else.

Thank you again, LI, and hugs for you!

edit: I just reread your post, and want to add that GLP is where I came for news, in the beginning, about six years ago. Since that time I found that the news is always here first, even before MSM. I no longer bother with MSM except the occasional article which might be linked somewhere.

I do sometimes worry about a few of the people here who don't seem to pay very much attention to what is going on. Some seem to think we have time - time to do whatever, take care of things in the future, buy something in a few months. I personally don't think we have that kind of time, or if we do, we cannot count on it.

I watch the news here very carefully, and dig into it. A whisper in a little thread tomorrow morning might contain the largest and worst news we could have - and it is necessary to be aware of this. We have troubles coming from so many directions.

For example I just watched a video which was linked in another thread, and among other things the man said, very quietly, that he knows two border patrol agents very well and they told him there are live rounds being fired, and things are going bad. ON OUR NORTHERN BORDER!!! I have tried to warn people not to just look south, but to be aware our northern border is completely porous, and Canada has let in all manner of people, perhaps more than we have, I think. Lots and lots of Chinese, too. Now I learn there is trouble and gunfire there - I live only a few hours from that border. Having been aware, and having warned about it, now we see a beginning of trouble there.

Another thing - the discussion of ebola, something I know a little about from the last time it sprung up. So I follow the ebola threads, and post on them, too. I"ve also begun following the "vaccination" threads. There was a link from one on ebola earlier today that I read just a little while ago, and if it had been a book, I would have dropped it in shock. Posted the information on the vaccination thread because it fit. The Gates foundation has invested in the company making an ebola vaccination. This company is MONSANTO - the same that made the Zyklon B gas for the Holocaust, that has made Round-UP and GMO that are killing us through our foods. Now THEY are going to make an ebola vaccine.

Just thinking from A to B to C - ebola threatens the southern border. A company which makes products to kill or at least shorten lives is making the vaccine. We can be forced to accept this vaccine, likely through martial law. What's in it? Probably nothing to do with ebola, but God only knows what it will do.

What will martial law do? Change our lives completely. Confiscate our weapons, our foods and water and anything else they choose. There are EOs allowing this.

We do need to watch the news, and be able to put things together for ourselves. Yes, we surely do.

There

Why is Candida auris a problem?

It causes serious infections. C. auris can cause bloodstream infections and even death, particularly in hospital and nursing home patients with serious medical problems. More than 1 in 3 patients with invasive C. auris infection (for example, an infection that affects the blood, heart, or brain) die.
It’s often resistant to medicines. Antifungal medicines commonly used to treat Candida infections often don’t work for Candida auris. Some C. auris infections have been resistant to all three types of antifungal medicines.
It’s becoming more common. Although C. auris was just discovered in 2009, it has spread quickly and caused infections in more than a dozen countries.
It’s difficult to identify. C. auris can be misidentified as other types of fungi unless specialized laboratory technology is used. This misidentification might lead to a patient getting the wrong treatment.
It can spread in hospitals and nursing homes. C. auris has caused outbreaks in healthcare facilities and can spread through contact with affected patients and contaminated surfaces or equipment. Good hand hygiene and cleaning in healthcare facilities is important because C. auris can live on surfaces for several weeks.

5G serves as an incubator for this infection

I ordered a new keyboard because this thing is driving me crazy. It has to come from China, though and will take 3-4 weeks to get here.

May I ask why you want a keyboard from China?

WL, I think most of us order our techie stuff from China - you-all correct me if I'm wrong. My Baofeng radios came from there, because that's where they are made. Extended antenna and cord for programming coming from same geography.

It is also a low-end HP and was made in China. eBay was the only place I could find a keyboard, with all sellers shipping from China. Cheap, though. $14 and free shipping.

I was listening to C2C radio show the other night...it was all about EMPs.

The guest mentioned: The EMP will come thru the GROUND...and thru the transformers GROUNDING...even on the dark side of the planet.

I thought hmmmmm...that would suggest that you do NOT want your faraday cage grounded.

But WTF do I know? I'm not an electrician.

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
Some of you may not be aware, just a couple years ago there was a CME that would have annihilated our electrical system worldwide. It wasn't facing earth, thank goodness. But it certainly makes you aware of just how precarious life on earth truly is. Solar cycle 24 has been unusually low in activity. Typically the cycle following a low one is much higher than normal. Why is this important? The suns activity powers our magnetic field. The field is very weak right now. A blast from a sunspot at such a low state would allow UVC rays to reach the ground. Not to mention the effects on the grid. UVC rays can alter DNA aka cause cancer.

I am sure there is a credible threat of a manmade EMP but also goverments are trying to figure out how to protect the grid. They know something is up. Do you remember when Russia was offering land in exchange for growing food? They practice drills to head to shelter. China with the empty cities.

This is only one credible threat to existance. We do need to be concerned about biological hazards. People have been experimenting since ww2. They have lost their morals as well as their common sense. Just because we CAN do things does not mean we SHOULD.

The disease factor in a SHTF scenario... Think about where Ebola showed up. This is a cultural thing where once a year the people there dig up their dead for a celebration, carrying them around the community. For every virus, bacteria, etc. they work on a cure for, you have the mad scientist types who work to weaponize it.
Does no one believe we shouldn't tinker with DNA when we don't even understand the nuances of each genes effects. And now we ingest their products. I think our original design was a pretty good one. Same with earth before people had such an effect on it. Just like medication being used for years, then uh oh, we better not use that one. What long term effects will meddling with DNA cause.

This is a prep thread. So, end of rant. Prep as best you can.

Pooka, I do not have means to prep yet. Soon, I hope. I have a lose plan for bugging out but it is complicated by my location and other factors. To me it seems a crying shame that being a person who might have a chance of surviving, find myself in such dire straights. This life has taken it's toll on me. For now, I strive not to survive for my sake, but for the generations who follow.

Pooka, you talked about scenarios a while back.

Here is one I experienced a few days ago.

I was out mowing the grass in front of my place. About 225' feet of frontage, and I like to keep it short this time of year because it grows fast and tall and poses a fire danger in the summer.

A guy comes walking down the road carrying a gas can. He started waving at me, so Ishut down the mower and got off. I
was annoyed. He walked up to me, he was a youngish guy wearing a dress shirt and pants...and moccasins.

He said he was from a mountain community about 20 miles up the road and had run out of gas heading to town for his former mother in law's funeral. He asked if I had any gas he could buy.

I told him, this isn't the place you want to come to with your guage on 'E'. He told me that the only store/gas station up there hadburned down a few months ago, so getting gas or groceries equates to a 30mile trip.

I know this to be true,as I have a friend that lives up that way and he had told me aboutthe store fire.

Judging by the way he was dressed, I figured he was legit. I told him I had some fuel and put aa couple of gallons in his can. He gave me $10 and headed back up the road.
bout an hourafter he left, I started thinking Ishould have offered him a ride back to his car.

Then again, maybe not.I know its not SHTF, but what doyouthink?

I shop on eBay all the time. So much easier than trying to walk though a store to find things I need. Never had a problem shopping there. I use PP, so it's all guaranteed. eBay had a slogan some time ago that I think should be permanent: "If it's on your mind, it's on eBay." Works that way for me!

The main thing I would not want from China is clothing - their sizes are so tiny, a 5X to them is our size 18, for pete's sake! Also never anything edible for my girls - they killed many pets a few years ago with the trash they put in dog food.

Good job on ordering two!

After Katrina, I placed ads on CL in numerous locales offering a place to stay (free) for a displaced family. At the time, I had a decent RV set up out back with room for 4 or 5 people.

I even offered to provide tools for a tradesman who had lost his stuff in Katrina. I have lots of tools to spare. I could have set up a plumber, electrician, mechanic, etc. with at least enough to get started in a new job up here.

Yes, we absolutely need to use everything we plan to use. Godblessya has reminded me of this, and I have yet to do it. Another thing is to turn off the lights and everything electric for a couple days and do what you would do. All wise.

Do you ever deal with New Egg? It's the first place I'd look for computer parts, but I don't know of many others, yet, so I'd appreciate any recommendations.

While I'm as aware as anybody how much tech stuff is being put together in China - not always a good thing, sometimes even with deadly effects, as in airplane parts- it simply didn't occur to me to have a part shipped to me directly from China instead of from an American seller or distributor. Does Ebay provide the same protections that Amazon does? Do you have a favorite seller to recommend?

I've tried to buy discount software that turned out to be in another country and either got a stolen key or didn't get anything at all. The bank helps out for small amounts, once or twice a year, if I lose my money but they get mad at me if it happens too often, so I have to stick to 'approved stores' now, at least until I learn who the best sellers are.:)

I didn't receive a single response.

Yeah, I can't compete with FEMA.

Speaking of FEMA, there was a large yard set up near here recently, graded, graveled and fenced. It is filled with new identical travel trailers. I saw articles stating these are for the displacedvictims of the Camp Fire in Paradise, CA. Yet 6 months later, there they sit.

I started thinking Ishould have offered him a ride back to his car. Then again, maybe not.I know its not SHTF, but what doyouthink?
 Quoting: Crunch62

I think you were wise in not doing so. We cannot be too careful. The moccasins seem odd with the dress shirt and pants, but not terribly dangerous. Just odd.

Even if nothing were waiting at his car, it was good practice to see what decision you would make. I would hope to make the same one, though knowing me I'd jump right up being as helpful as I could. Phooey on that!

You did reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeal good, Crunch!

One thing I want to ask - did you have a clear view behind him for some distance? My main concern would not have been was there a group at the car, but more was there a group in the trees, just waiting to see if you were armed, or if anyone else came out.

Some of you may not be aware, just a couple years ago there was a CME that would have annihilated our electrical system worldwide. It wasn't facing earth, thank goodness. If I recall correctly, that was in 2015 and missed the earth by 2-4 hours.

A good thing too! Crunch62 dodged a bullet: 500 people might have answered, all wanting the same space and refusing to leave. From all I've heard about the 'Katrina refugees,' I'd never have had the nerve to invite any. (displaced animals is different) It's really sad that extraordinary kindness has to carry such risk, but it certainly does.

Even my liberal Democrat mother, who's a Southerner, said she was sorry that whole Ninth Ward didn't just sink entirely and that they had 'ruined New Orleans long before that hurricane hit.' Some parts of Houston came within an inch of an insurrection when the government dumped a bunch of them there and they went right back to their usual lifestyle: crime. (I happen to know that because it's where I was born and I still have a soft spot for it so I always keep track of what's happening there if I can.)

It is also a low-end HP and was made in China. eBay was the only place I could find a keyboard, with all sellers shipping from China. Cheap, though. $14 and free shipping.

Actually,I ordered two so I'll have a spare.
 Quoting: Crunch62

 Quoting: whispering leaves

I have purchased from newegg, but in my job it was mostly vendors such as CDWG and ITSavvy.

eBay/Paypal do provide protections but probably not as accomodating as amazon.

The biggest problem with orderingdirectly from china isthe delivery time. 3-6 weeks, usually.

I have seen some of the same items offered by US sellers at a high markup (meaning they bought it from china, waited for the shipping and now looking fora profit), but not in the case of this keyboard. I would have paid $30 for a keyboard from a US seller who could deliver in 3 days, butI couldn't find one.

For some years already, life has altered so much that we really cannot be out enjoying the sun on our skin - we all need to be wearing sunscreen to prevent cancer. Oddly, about a year ago, a skin cancer was discovered on my back. I have had lupus for years, meaning my entire body except face and hands is covered with clothing to block sun, and even as a younger person I didn't enjoy laying in the sun "tanning" so that cancer had a beginning long, long ago. Fortunately it was the surface type, and was entirely removed. Just surprised me to have it where sun had not touched in many, many years.

I am sure there is a credible threat of a manmade EMP but also goverments are trying to figure out how to protect the grid. They know something is up. Do you remember when Russia was offering land in exchange for growing food? They practice drills to head to shelter. China with the empty cities. Yes, a great deal of preparation for this. Russia threatened to EMP us in recent years, and I don't doubt they have the capability, as I am sure, we do as well. Wanted to mention regarding China that Russia has offered all the space China can use to grow their food. Very interesting dynamic there. It is good rich land they offered.

This is only one credible threat to existance. We do need to be concerned about biological hazards. People have been experimenting since ww2. They have lost their morals as well as their common sense. Just because we CAN do things does not mean we SHOULD. We truly should not do many of these things we "can".

Seems so many work on the dark side - to make bad out of good at every opportunity, and to make bad worse. Signs of the times, I suggest, with evil coming under the door and over the transom.

We truly have absolutely no business messing about in God's domain - the weather, DNA, weaponizing biologics - we had everything we needed, and now we have damaged most of it so that we can no longer use it as intended. Designer babies is one of those horrible man-made efforts. GMO and all of Monsanto's machinations - food can no longer be trusted unless you grew it yourself, and even then you have to make very sure the seeds were non-GMO. We have dabbled in God's terrain extensively and look what we have - tremendous damaging weather events worse than ever before, poisoned food, so much.

 Quoting: LookingInward

My dear, I would invite you here, if you had means and desire, to help you, to share prepping, for neither of us to be alone in the situation that may arise. I'm so sorry you are caught in this unfortunate time, and are having to reinvent your life. I went through something similar and was in a horrible position for about four years before life began to make sense again. Wishing for you it will settle soon and turn the other direction.
