Thank you, Lance! Great information to have! I was just thinking today how much I wish I could have a few chickens here, just for the eggs and the occasional chicken stew.

Are you on IRC? I am, always.

I started thinking Ishould have offered him a ride back to his car. Then again, maybe not.I know its not SHTF, but what doyouthink?
 Quoting: Crunch62

I think you were wise in not doing so. We cannot be too careful. The moccasins seem odd with the dress shirt and pants, but not terribly dangerous. Just odd.

Even if nothing were waiting at his car, it was good practice to see what decision you would make. I would hope to make the same one, though knowing me I'd jump right up being as helpful as I could. Phooey on that!

You did reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeal good, Crunch!

One thing I want to ask - did you have a clear view behind him for some distance? My main concern would not have been was there a group at the car, but more was there a group in the trees, just waiting to see if you were armed, or if anyone else came out.
 Quoting: Pooka

He did make a comment that he probably hadn't made the best choice in footwear for walking down a road.

Good view behind him. Remember, this is a floodplain (i.e., flat), so not much chance of a group 'in the trees' LOL.

Some oak and eucalyptus trees, but really nothing for a group to hide behind. Other than homes and barns, visibility is miles and miles

Was this on eBay? Never heard of having to go to your bank to "fix it". eBay and PP will "fix it" themselves, and fast!

No, it was not on Ebay. I haven't bought anything from Ebay since 2005, when I ordered a phone, it wasn't at all as advertised so I sent it back to the seller, I paid all postage, and never heard from him again. I never got my money back and Ebay blew me off. I never shopped there again.

I dropped Paypal years ago when they dropped a few of my favorite nationalist forums and small businesses, but I never did like the idea of letting them have discretionary access to my accounts. Once in a while, they'd make a mistake and pull out double or triple and then it took me days talking to foreigners to fix the problem; meanwhile my checks would bounce.

On the other hand, I've had the same bank for decades and find them much easier to deal with. Maybe I'm just more comfortable keeping the number of 'large entities' I'm willing to trust at a minimum; it's easier to keep track.

My dear, I would invite you here, if you had means and desire, to help you, to share prepping, for neither of us to be alone in the situation that may arise. I'm so sorry you are caught in this unfortunate time, and are having to reinvent your life. I went through something similar and was in a horrible position for about four years before life began to make sense again. Wishing for you it will settle soon and turn the other direction.

Thank you Pooka. I have long desired to head west. I seriously considered it. A lot of doors have slammed shut for me and in the end, I know I belong here for now. Knowing the flora and fauna here, I would be uneducated in your climate.

This does indeed bring up something that has been on my mind. Some time ago I made a thread that I thought had legs to stand on but the individualist mentallity has been at work awhile. The gas can story above has points to make also. The age we live in, one cannot trust anyone. We cannot be good samaritans now. It may cost us our lives.

Getting back to my point, it would enable more people to have a better chance of surviving if several preppers could join forces. But as things are, someone will offend someone else and you know the rest. While I was in a position to prep I hung onto some things knowing full well I wouldn't have need of but someone else would. It may sound silly but that is the place life has taken my heart to. On the gas can, those could well be the people who could be in a position to help just as you could help them post SHTF. Then again, when it comes to food and surviving, well, you all know the horrors. It is a soul wracking time to be alive. Having struggled to get through a catastrophic time in life, people in general have saddened my heart. That hasn't dampened my caring in the least though.

So what do ya do? The only thing I know, keep on keeping on. Dropping truth bombs. Do a kindness now and then that let people know good folks haven't vanished. Distant, but here. Trusting my instincts to keep me from trouble with a silent wish going out to remain safe.

Very odd that eBay didn't back you. Did you file a claim?

Regarding PP, I have a separate bank account labeled PayPal and use it only for that purpose, for the very reason you stated - can't have them make a mistake in my main account with which I pay bills, etc. However, they have never made a mistake in all my years of doing business with them. I connected them to the PP account, so they can take the money for a purchase from there. I move that amount of money to that account just before I hit Pay.

You are ideally situated in so many ways! Love that you are able to see so far. That's an issue I have - buildings and such so I cannot see anyone coming. Miss my country home so much! That's why I plan on "driveway alarms" around my specific place so I know when somebody is out of bounds.

I'm just glad for your situation in so many ways! Not to say envious, of course. :)

If that naughty MC ever sends me a few hundred in Easter bunnies, I might ask the bunnies to carry me to your place. I could hide out there and help you with things. If the bunnies are willing, of course, and if MC ever gets a move on!

Joining forces is ideal, for protection and for ongoing projects, but the trust issue is the issue, for sure. I would invite you, but with the hope that we had some time before SHTF, to get to know each other, so that if it wouldn't work out we'd have time to find you a place you would prefer.

I have some things here that are for other people, and have had for some time, just to help, but will be exceedingly circumspect as to whom I give it and the means of transfer. I still think not opening the door is best. Many pages ago in a scenario someone posed, I said I might speak to someone through the door, but if I agreed to barter or give something, I would suddenly toss it out a window, very unexpectedly, rather than open the door. Layers of thought, layers of protection.

I'm sorry you are having such a time of it, and I can relate. Just one step at a time, it will come right again.

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
Pooka, you talked about scenarios a while back.

Here is one I experienced a few days ago.

I was out mowing the grass in front of my place. About 225' feet of frontage, and I like to keep it short this time of year because it grows fast and tall and poses a fire danger in the summer.

A guy comes walking down the road carrying a gas can. He started waving at me, so Ishut down the mower and got off. I
was annoyed. He walked up to me, he was a youngish guy wearing a dress shirt and pants...and moccasins.

He said he was from a mountain community about 20 miles up the road and had run out of gas heading to town for his former mother in law's funeral. He asked if I had any gas he could buy.

I told him, this isn't the place you want to come to with your guage on 'E'. He told me that the only store/gas station up there hadburned down a few months ago, so getting gas or groceries equates to a 30mile trip.

I know this to be true,as I have a friend that lives up that way and he had told me aboutthe store fire.

Judging by the way he was dressed, I figured he was legit. I told him I had some fuel and put aa couple of gallons in his can. He gave me $10 and headed back up the road.
bout an hourafter he left, I started thinking Ishould have offered him a ride back to his car.

Then again, maybe not.I know its not SHTF, but what doyouthink?

Damn this keyboard.

One day I was getting ready to leave for work and I spotted someone with a motorcycle at the end of my driveway. I went down and asked if he was okay and he replied that he was just out of gas. Of course, this was something that I could rectify so I asked him to wait until I came back. I got the can that I use for my lawnmower and carried it back... only then did I see the make of the motorcycle - a Ducati. My thought was "that machine ain't used to the swill that I feed my lawn mower." In an unsaid agreement, the person only accepted maybe half a gallon.

Have to agree, I do, as well. And it would/will hurt me not to provide what people have asked for. I give away things all the time - items that I need or want myself, but I always think the other person's need must be greater than my own. Not to do so after SHTF is purely self-protection. I don't want interactions with people because there is no way to be certain their intentions are not nefarious and my kindness might be the very source by which they overtake me and mine.

In the beginning I imagine there will be plenty of examples of persons just wanting to get a little ways down the road. Maybe a meal and some water. All of these I stand ready to accomodate, after all they are headed somewhere else.

But then I have to consider the welfare of those around me and my heart sinks. Do I plan on carrying my neighbors? If I cannot, when do I say no? What is my response when their desperation leads them to some act against my own?

Dear God. There is no good solution to this one, I am afraid. It's not likely to suddenly turn up in a safe place.

Thank you for this find, ugly though it is.

We need to turn up our plans, our preparations, our intentions, our will, and our knowledge. Whatever is needed in our minds must already be there when it hits, except what we learn while doing - those will be the hardest lessons of all.

As far as the bacteria stolen in venezuela...It was stolen from a university lab.

I hope it was stolen and destroyed by a prof. or a student...maybe they recognized the danger & did something about it.

When the soviet union collapsed there was a nuclear worker who brought 10 pounds of plutonium home with him & buried it in his flower garden (in a sealed case).

When gov't stabilized (a few years later) he told them to come pick it up...he was just making sure no bad guys got a hold of it.

The hope of one person in these days is that they can have a positive effect on another's decisions. It's no longer a matter of how much you've gathered to provide against the coming malestrom, for most people it is what they can carry when they flee from the disaster.

A Lexus pulls up, asks for food. A Dodge pulls up, wanting the same. You run the calculus about sending supplies to either one. Your own local group pays the price but only for one day as opposed to, what, a week?

And maybe the Dodge is carrying someone who knows how to blacksmith and the Lexus has someone who know how forage for medicine? What is your price for admission? Which do you decide is a viable addition?
