The size of the larger, square buckets doesn't seem to be embossed on the bottom as it is with the smaller round ones. I'll have to do more research on that.

So today I had to go out to the beach to the doctor, PO and so forth. There's a little store out there that keeps wonderful beef marrow bones frozen in plastic bags and I like to get them for my girls - give them only half thawed on the hottest days to give them joy and help cool them.

There was a corner of the meat counter right there by the freezer, and I saw it as I turned around. Bacon, one lb. packages, 2 for $4!!! I couldn't believe my eyes. Didn't go there for bacon but certainly came home with two packages - be nice to have some now and stick the other package in the freezer for future reference. It's not going to be very available after this summer, I believe, and the price is already out of sight, so this find was a huge surprise! Hope you-all find deals like that regularly, to add to your preparations.

mmmmm bacon and eggs!

So I've spent the last couple of days trying to find the right pair of boots for my flat feet and plantar faciitus. That's a bad combination.

Looking for a mostly leather boot with Thinsulate insulation. The trail is leading to Rocky boots so tomorrow I'll drive over and have a look at them. Right now you can get them at 20% off from TacticalGear.com. And what I'm looking at will come in under $100. I just don't see any tariffs out there. That is one hell of a price for what your getting. Full grain leather and 600 grams of Thinsulate and 8" high...

Plantar fasciitis is incredibly painful - you have my absolute empathy and sympathy! Been there!

I'd be very careful buying boots now which accommodate the fasciitis, because it will not last, and then you might have boots that are too loose, or do not fit as well as you like. Despite the current percentage off, you might want to wait, as you won't require these warm boots for some months, and by the time you do, the painful problem should be but a bad memory receding.

At least, that's my suggestion.

More ebola threads. People, it's about time to do the mask, glove and eye protection thing. Very, very close to sheltering in place.

Measles is now the code word for ebola. Bear that in mind.

Ebola is still being hidden by our government, despite multiple states doing drills for it, and other evidence. It will remain hidden until it's too late for most people, who will already have been in close contact with ebola sufferers.

Please think seriously about this, about protecting yourself and your families. I pray you will not be too late, that you will refuse to take ebola seriously until you no longer have a choice. It will be too late, and you cannot turn time back.

One advantage to sheltering in place, even for a little while, is the practice! Use preparedness foods, do preparedness things - items to occupy the children, things for yourself to do. Practice your communications devices - the ones for after TSHTF and grid down. We all need to be using what we have, practicing, getting good at it, finding the holes in our preparations, learning what not to do as well as what to do.

People, we are friends here, and I very much want us all to live to go on being friends.

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
A few weeks ago a loving brother on here sent me a PM, with a video about the following, instructing me to buy one. I took it well, knowing his motives - he's a married man very much in love with his wife - a brother to me.

So, I did as bidden, and ordered. Today I installed. I am thrilled! I recommend this strongly for any woman on here who lives alone, and for everybody else as well. This will be helpful right now, and when SHTF.

Installation was simple - took only moments for someone even in my shape. Hardest part was screwing in longer screws, into wood that had not had a hole in it that far. Just used my hands, not a drill.

One more point - the longer the screws in anything on your doors, the more secure. These screws were an inch longer than what was in it previously. Love it!

[link to www.ebay.com (secure)]

Let me know what you think, and if you purchase - and then how you like it. I love it!

Potato leaves are up!!! WHOOPEEEEE!!! First sign - I am so happy! My dog knocking them over and disrupting them so I had to stuff potato starts and growing medium all back into the buckets. Worried that they would be slowed down or misdirected. Victory in at least one case!

Dengue, West Nile, and, potentially, Ebola can be spread by mosquitoes.

I have often referred to my farm as "The Brazoria County Mosquito Hatchery".

However, I have decided to NUKE the mosquitos. I have been using a fogger, but will now add hose sprayed poison and granular poison designed for lawns.

My livestock will thank me as well.

First off, a cautionary tale from my favorite nurse. People who hang out here probably know this already, but for anyone just tuning in:

Sometimes I take my wonderful doctor for granted, but they're not all good - be careful what you say to them. I work in the "medical industrial complex" and she is spot on!

Now kind of a cautionary tale from my own very recent experience.

The best way to treat any kind of viral infection is, of course, to avoid it. Most of us are doing our best to stay healthy, eating right, staying out of crowds etc., etc., etc. That said, I got a real dose of health-awareness humility a couple of weeks ago.

Despite having not had a cold for years, I woke up one morning with a sore throat. So I followed my normal protocol and overdosed with Vitamin C, dosed up with elderberry and oil of oregano, and waited for either the storm to pass, as it almost always does, or for a slight cold to come on. But it didn't. Sore throat got worse, but nothing else. After three days, I broke down and saw a doc-in-a-box because it was the weekend and my doctor's office was closed. All I wanted was for them to tell me I didn't have strep throat, which they did.

Sore throat hung on and I started coughing. Yay. Fifth day in I had my regularly quarterly doc appointment and I obligingly coughed all over the place. Which he took seriously. After poking, knocking, and listening a bunch, he told me I had early pneumonia. WTF!!! I don't get sick. There are things wrong with me and I'm 68, but I do not get sick. Until I did.

Ten days's worth of clindamycin did the trick, but it was kind of a wake up call. I didn't think I was sick and was going about my normal business, just not feeling great. But I could have ended up in bed for a while.

I'm not sure what the moral of the story is. Maybe to stock clindamycin along the other "fish" meds. Maybe to be aware that yes, I can and do get sick even though I take care of myself. Maybe to take not feeling well seriously if/after medical help isn't available.

Maybe, too, it's this: The S hasn't HTF yet. I can prep and make myself mentally and physically ready, but I can still take advantage of what modern medicine has to offer when the natural route fails and I don't need to feel bad about it. Yep, maybe that's it.

Pooka, my farm has about 4 acres of standing water. Cannot drain it all.

Yes, the poison is a risk, but right now the mosquitoes are the biggest problem.

Just finished a course of antibiotics for throat infection.

I am thinking of getting fish antibiotics to keep in my refrigerator for emergencies. Perhaps with Ebola it may be dangerous to go to a clinic.

I definitely keep fish antibiotics on hand including amoxicillin, doxycycline, azithromycin, ciprofloxacin, and now clindamycin. They're probably good three or four years past expiration date. If you take tetracycline, do NOT keep it past expiration; it's one of the few that actually turns toxic.

I also keep wild lettuce, kratom, elderberry, and oil of oregano. Mullein grows around here, as does stinging nettle.
And, by gosh, if SHTF, I'll grow poppies, too!

Great post! I do subscribe to her on Patreon. Hope others will too after watching that video.

I agree with your final conclusion, about availing ourselves of modern medicine while we have it, though some of all of it may apply.

Mostly, I am grateful you went to the doctor, because once your lungs are scarred, as they would have been- we will hope they are not yet - there is no cure. I have scarred lungs, and there's nothing that will cure them. Can only treat them in the damaged condition. So glad you went!!!!

Thank you again for this post which will save many a great deal of heartache if they heed it.

Yes, there are estimates. I've seen several - up to 70% not planted. There's no doubt there will be remarkable prices as well as some emptiness in the stores by fall. It's not a great food estimate coming out, and we need to be prepared to provide as much of our own as possible, from what we grown, in whatever way we can grow it - my option is buckets - as well s from our stocks of preparedness foods which need to be large. Bear Independent says - here - let's have his most recent video and you all can hear what he says.

With ebola, you MUST NOT GO OUT AT ALL!!! I've tried so hard to explain to people the facts about ebola - please read this thread
Thread: Ebola warning US - Update: now believed to be airborne - heads up!!!!! (Page 10)

It's not my first on ebola, but I am basically a broken record on the subject, with the warning to stay in, shelter in place, NOT POSSIBLE TO GO OUT FOR ANYTHING. Have the right masks, gloves and eye protection. Have everything, and I mean everything, in your home that you will need for a matter of months. Know that martial law will be coming in a pandemic, and do not go out then, either, until the randy new kids who get to play martial law guards settle down and know how to do their jobs, rather than loving throwing their weight around needlessly, which will of course be the case for some time. Those going out will likely not come home again in early martial law. Those going out "shopping" will likely either be shot by "shopping" gangs or bring home ebola. Please take me seriously. It's not fear porn, it's reality.

The fish antibiotics always need to be kept - many have warned about this - when SHTF they will be crucial for your own family, and if you have some to barter, they will be worth more than almost anything else. Unfortunately, they are becoming harder and harder to get without prescription. Back a few or more than a few pages we have a discussion about that, along with one of the only sources left available. Might want to have a read of a lot of this thread - so much good in it.

Hibiclens is a product I want to share with you, and with the ebola thread as well, because it is a wonderful tool in the fight against disease, contamination, and infections of all kinds.

Hibiclens is readily available at Walmart and pharmacies, as well as online.

The amazing thing is that once hands or any body part is washed with Hibiclens, it continues to kill bacteria, micro-organisms, AND viruses for up to twenty-four hours after using. That means everything from the common cold to streptococcus to ebola!

Thank you! Remember to boil or otherwise kill all possible unfortunate things in water before using, no matter the source.

Water is crucial, so every source must be considered. Aren't the people blessed who have natural springs on their property?

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
While the N95 masks are still used in the protective gear assembly of doctors and nurses in Africa, where I believe they use the very best gear they know of, someone has convinced me that N100 or P100 may be the better masks. Don't throw out your N95s, but for future purchases, N100 or the P100 which is made for oily substances, may be a better purchase. I have N95s and will use them as needed, but if adding to my preps, I will order the higher number in future.

Also, if you don't have a yard, a bag of garden soil can be used to grow as well.

And buy a plastic tote bin that the bag of soil can lay flat on the lid of said tote, and in the cold weather put the bin over the soil and click into the lid and voila!

mini greenhouse! You can grow greens all winter long!

Wow! Green for ya! I've never heard of that one, thank you!

Really cool! If you can find a clear one, the light through the plastic, plus the sun's warmth inside the plastic, could keep a lot of things growing much of the winter - maybe all, depending on where you live and how your winter goes.
