Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
Very smart post. Nightsoil on gardens - NOOOO definitely not. We must keep certain things well away from our food crops. I am not crazy about using human urine, but may consider it at some point. Better to have a gallon of Alaska Fish Fertilizer, which will last a very long time because it is diluted so greatly at time of use, and does a miraculous job!.

Human soil must be contained and removed from any area near people, water, garden. Some say it can be burned and I would recommend this - if kept separate from urine, the bags could be opened for brief periods to dry - but well away from everything. Better is to have a good roaring fire, then toss on the bag and all. After children are in bed and after the fireside chat is done for the evening. Burning would be ideal disposal. I would prefer it go on a fire made for the purpose, well away from the fire used for cooking, socializing, etc. Make a pit for garbage burning, and at a time when that fire is very busy, burn the waste as well. With the prevailing wind in the direction opposite living quarters.

To offer a contrarian view, there is a way to take nightsoil and make it suitable as a fertilizer - by composting it. There's a book about it called The Humanure Handbook which you can read for free at the link below.

[link to humanurehandbook.com]

You can buy the book at that link, too.

There's also the concept of methane digesters that treat the nightsoil anaerobically, creating methane that can be used for cooking and yielding a byproduct that can be composted using the method above. This is a much more technical solution that requires significant labor and materials to make.

Think about how you are going to do your cooking versus available firewood and seasoning that. As you discver you want to do as much solar ovens and rocket stoves to minimize frewood or else you're fellig trees and worrying about seasoning in time. And then, what if you need that lumber? That's all bad as that tree might be oak and making acorns you eat and cutting off your squirrel meat.

So methane generation and cooking gas, especially when it's hot and a woodstove of any kind is making it unbearable, then methane sounds wonderful.

Our ancestors put in "summer kitchens" and these were just screened porches with a cookstove and a sink and prep area. You are going to want that. You are going to want a "cobb oven" made of clay and straw because all that heat inside will run everyone out. So the cobb oven has a small roof and is next to the summer kitchen.
 Quoting: WhyKnot

I've always loved the idea of a "summer kitchen" though in my part of the country they are not useful or necessary. I used to read about them in books about the south, and thought what a romantic idea it is - but it was coupled with magnolia trees and lazy rivers.

Hope those in hot climates are able to make summer kitchens to help in all the SHTF issues.

You mentioned washing in the other topic on beans. What you would do is eventually rig up something like this. You could take the motor out of your dryer and use that for a windmill to make electricity to change a battery. And you could use a bicycle and a gear box to agitate the old washing machine.

This is a fairly standard 55 gallon plastic drum on its side to agitate the clothes.

They make one for 3rd world villages that is smaller so it uses less water. You would a wringer versus trying high speed centrifugal force.

Any journeyman craftsman should be able to rig up something.

Save that greywater as you can use that in the garden from the final rinse. That water could be used for lots of jobs like for flushing toilets.

Never grow celery again, and have a lovely house plant to boot! Grow outdoors in temperate climate, but for the rest of us, inside works.

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
Great posts, all of them, Why Knot, with two exceptions. Your suggestion of necessary water amount is so far below what's really needed that I am surprised you wrote it! Figure on a minimum of THREE GALLONS PER PERSON PER DAY. That won't be enough, but you might be able to survive on it. Water for drinking, cooking, hygiene, laundry, wiping a child's dirty face, adding to the radiator, showers, and so much more that we don't think of until we don't have it.

Hygiene is critical after TSHTF because we will be in danger of dying from blood poisoning from something as tiny as a wee scratch or hangnail, if we are not washing our hands and bodies and clothing frequently. Just consider how much water that will require, yet we absolutely must do these things to survive. We will want to clean our counters and floors. These things will have to do with survival, as well. Most people only consider water for drinking and cooking, and completely forget the other two gallons per day we MUST have.

Then there is toilet flushing - as long as the plumbing works, we have to flush it. That's what "gray water" is for, but sometimes we will have to use fresh, unfortunately.

You mention what contractors carry water in - most of us don't have a clue what that would be, what it looks like, what size it is, how much it holds. A link would be super!

Otherwise, thank you very much for these suggestions! You are down to getting ready time, which certainly feels appropriate considering everything going on in the world!

Well done!

I want to remind everyone that the Oregon "excersize" begins in the next few days. This is a pandemic exercise, rolling out fake immunizations for five counties and also Native American Reservations.

When did we see an exercise in recent history that was not quickly followed by the real thing? God help us - let's hope we see no such thing this time!

This may or may not be connected - in the latter portion of last week, a large train hauling a great many UN vehicles was seen going into Oregon. UN vehicles!!! Some with red crosses on them. There is nothing at all I like about that, and to perhaps be connected with the pandemic "excersize" is too much to consider!!

I do hope we have Oregonians here, or will have, who will tell us what they see and what they learn.

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
Y'all should top off now.

If something happens, y'all should have your water situation addressed, and have all your vessels clean, your filters inspected, have a plan, etc.

Check your valve on your hotwater tank. Often there is rust blocking valve due to sediment settling and accumulating. Carefully clean your washing machine. Between the two, that is about 80 or so gallons. Then if you have a water bob, then that can store whatever the volume in your tub, so figure a total of 120+ gallons. It's tight but you can make it on 1/2 gallon per person. So a family of four needs 2 gallons a day. That's 60days but with spillage figure 55 days.

Watch and be wary.

In a bad case, most people without water and scavanging would be gone in 7-10 days.
 Quoting: WhyKnot

Where I live, we have a great deal of rain, meaning we have many year=round streams, rivers, lakes, ponds - all sorts of water, and that rain will begin in earnest again in September/October, becoming torrential in November and on.

As a result, people in serious thirst will drink from any water source they stumble upon, not taking time to purify the water first.

Thus, illness will be rampant - all the waterbourne diseases will come into play - typhoid, typhus, all the nasty worms and critters that will invade the body, clear to the brain, if not simply causing dysentery, which will be left for animals and people to step in - everything about drinking dirty water is a life-hazard, but it will happen.

Think about any water sources in your general vicinity. Consider how likely people are to find it, and how far they can walk before illness hits them. We have to stay away from these ill people - don't be near them, don't let pets near them. Disposal of the dead will also come into play, as even the body is hazardous. Worse, we don't know if they died of a waterbourne illness, or if they have come from an ebola-ridden area.

Stay away from the ill, at all costs. If you have to give them something, get the strongest thrower in your group to THROW whatever it is, preferably past them, moving them further away from you!

From the beginning of this thread I have recommended sheltering in place, closing and locking the doors, drawing the blinds or drapes, and waiting it out at last three weeks, to see what comes next. Be using your HAM or CB or crank radio to learn what is going on locally, but stay inside until you truly have reason to believe two people from your group dare go outside, masked and gloved, to look around.
