Stay Warmer This Winter with a Candle Heater

A Northern California inventor has created a small space heater powered by a single jar candle. The device consists of a multi-core steel and ceramic radiator suspended above the candle on a steel frame. The heat of the candle is captured and concentrated in the center of the radiator assembly by an internal solid steel core. After 20-30 minutes the outer ceramic surface begins to radiate the captured thermal energy into your room or office.

You can add a little heat to the house by letting the hot water run in the bathtub for 20-30 seconds.

It heats up the water pipe, the drain pipe, the traps & the tub itself.

Makes the furnace run a little bit less.

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
So in regards to tinned meat. The ones in the rectangle tins. They are sort of like spam but they have flavours of just chicken or just turkey...There are a few brands without soy.

Anyway, they are quite disgusting, especially if you cut the hunk into into small chunks and try to boil it like for a soup...Ohhh the horror....The pieces melt like muck in your mouth.

No good for soup. Write that one off

However,

I've discovered, that if you slice them very thin ( like potato chips, and then fry them with poultry seasoning, well done, on low heat with no oil...

... they get crispy and taste like turkey bacon !

You're welcome :)

Thank God I will never have to do any more trial and error with this one.

Checkmark for turkey bacon.

get off your devices and computer, trust me I waste a lot of time on here

although I do it a lot during the winter months but when springs comes around or even the snow starts melting, get back outside
 Quoting: Denholm

I'm not entirely sure being on GLP is a great waste of time - this is where we learn what the news really is, long before most sources learn of it.

It's also a great place to learn specific things. If there isn't already a thread on the subject, posting the question in a new thread nearly always gets great results [and a few real losers, too]

As with others, I'll have less time in the spring and summer, because I love to be outside with my plants and trees. However, evenings I will spend here, after mornings catching up on the news.

I don't have a smart phone - just a landline, so telephone time is minimal.

Good idea! Since water pipe and drain pipe are generally enclosed, maybe close the drain and let a little hot water run into the tub, heating the tub to give off heat.

Remember also to prep your mind.

You will miss butter, big macs, skittles, oreos, or whatever it is that you are used to.

IMO this is the biggest best prep you can do!

PMA - Positive Mental Attitude. Without it you will not only die...you will bring down and destroy your entire group.

Please remember that when you're thinking about allowing a negative nancy into your group. She can kill you all by bringing you down.

We could start an entire section on PMA!

Fluffy Pancake mentioned to me how great it would be to divide this thread into sections, such as water, growing things, clothing, and other sections. I thought so as well, so asked a mod about it. Not possible to sort out threads here, sorry to say, so we'll just have to continue as we are, with a montage of suggestions and people will need to read the whole thread to get all of the good work and helps you all have provided so generously.

Yes, we need PMA - and some of us won't be in a group, so we need it especially!

 Quoting: Meese

I appreciate your "game" of color-coding where to buy what. You might even add, for large stores like HOme Depot, exactly where in the store those items are located - Aisle number, for example. Won't work in Walmart as one of their major marketing techniques is to keep moving sections around, thereby forcing people to see, and hopefully buy, merchandise they don't generally look at.

Omg ! Awesome integration- because when real humans finally get to shopping for "luxuries" such as prepping, like the weekend, our very souls r
damn near spent after maintaining a home, taking care of kids, getting bills paid, remembering to change the car's oil change- WE R EXHAUSTED!!!
So making the list uber organized down to aisle&price, get in/get out
quick n dirty appeals to me,and may (I pray to God)make the sleeping skeptics realize "just in case" isn't such a huge deal. Just this weekend, my friend and I were able to casually mention to three different families in our little neighborhood this idea. They were surprisingly receptive,it gave me great comfort and again made the mountain shit-storm a little less shitty, again decreasing anxiety-bc as others hav mentioned, the mental factor is real. I wanted to point out a great reason to prep.

In 2008, we were not close...it happened!

It really happened!

Banks were failing. Risky debt instruments (CDOs and MBSs) failed. Letters of payment were not being signed by banks so ships in port were not being unloaded.

Our entire system of trade locked up as if it had a heart attack!

You can bitch & moan about the bank bailouts...that's not my point.

My point is...that was not close...we actually went over the edge & somehow came back from the abyss.

That could have been it! (it should have been it).

If you have a long road or diveway to get to your house...you could tape it off with yellow QUARANTINE tape.

Just beyond the tape you could toss a few dead animal carcasses for all to see.

That should scare the hell out of anybody approaching your house.

Excellent point! I think there are too many things going on right now for us to be able to back away from all of them. Islam taking over the country in their intentions, the interlopers all over the country, now Venezuelans will be coming in true hordes, and they WILL get across the border, one way or ten others, China, Russia, everything going on. We can't seriously expect to get out of all of it.

Another government shutdown coming, emergency declaration, martial law - at the very least we need to be prepped to STAY IN for a while to let everything settle. NO going to stores, visiting, getting gas, anything. Please, everybody, do not go out once it starts!! Have some way of keeping up with local news inside your home. A wind-up radio is a handy device if power is out. CB in your vehicle wouldn't hurt.

Or atleast stay alert...look ahead at the store you are going to...if you notice a rukus in the parking lot, keep driving...don't stop...go to a different store.

Maybe a convenience store will be safer, or a tiny thrift bakery.

Maybe you can get food thru a drive thru...but alot of those drive thrus have one lane...don't get stuck in one of those with no way out!

Always be looking ahead at what might happen!

Try to stay in the right lane so you're not utterly trapped (boxed in) at a red light.

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
There is a way to prep that natural, it stocking a pantry, saying it the best way to save money. Always being ready if there is and emergency is one thing. You are learning how the early households did, before just in time delivery. The just in time delivery is what happens that disrupt life and causes people to not have what they may need.

We always had pantries and you used it and replaced the items use, a chart was used to keep up with what was there or needed to be replaces. Canning was part of the reason for pantries, other other store bought. It was a have to before the just in time around 1972 I believe it was, before this, stores had stocked supplies and later they did not, it was and still is deliver every week and sometime more a week.

If anything disrupts the restocking of the just in time stock, in one week, nothing can be bought by anyone.
 Quoting: hankie

Grocery stores generally have in stock a three-day supply for their customers. After three days, if a truck delivery - or in most cases many trucks with different kinds of goods and foods, does not appear by the end of the third day, it's too late. There will be some things left in the store, but not the most desirable items.

Bear this three-day supply in mind, always. And make your plans well enough that you are NOT going out your door to shop after TSHTF or even seriously looks like it is about to.

Hankie is right about the pantries - my grandmother had one, and it was kept filled with home-canned goods as well as other foods.

Many had a root cellar, as well, for carrots, potatoes, etc. Some kept their jars of canning in the root cellars, too.
 Quoting: Pooka

yup, and 100 years ago people would be really uncomfortable if they didn't have a year's worth of food for the family in reserve.

We are accustomed to technology, automation, no shortage of anything.

I remember when Sandy rolled through NY and the people on Staten Island were without any help for over a week. No food, no water...very tough for them. Everyone seemed to forget them and all else got help until someone managed to get on TV and say what about us, where's our Red Cross??

Anyone that's gone through a major natl disaster knows how precarious things can be. Doesn't have to be teotwawki...

Have stuff put back.

I look at food storage as insurance. I don't use a helluva lot of powdered milk, evaporated or condensed milk, any number of things I have stored. And if they get too old and are not used, i'll toss em and replace them because they are insurance and worth the loss if they have to be tossed. To me anyhow.

Most of the stuff I can rotate. I still eat canned tuna and salmon against my better judgement, after praying a really strong grace over it, and the new goes in the back and the old gets used first.

Get a sharpie and write the date you bought it on the cans..not over the expiry date...they will last longer than the expiry, but it's good to know it....but if you put the date you bought it, you can know what to use first.

Force yourself to make rice and beans and eat them if you hate them. Challenge yourself in ways you know that you personally are lacking.

Mebbe nothing will ever happen, mebbe everything will be fine. What have you lost? And I" m really betting that something major is gonna happen in the not too distant future and we're gonna be in the years of blood and war of one kind or the other.

Once the stores are outta stuff in that case, it's too late.
 Quoting: godblessya!

I haven't marked things with a sharpie and not long ago had to toss a lot of things I could have been rotating. Okay, sharpie it is, and thank you for the recommendation!

SHARPIES R AWESOME!!!! I'm pretty sure God uses them when He does his crossword. Also DollarTree(use a green sharpie) sells pretty labels in a
multi pack. Regular, dry erase(sharpie usage would b silly in this instance)
and the black board variety for chalk. Handy and practical, yet pretty and warm. Maintaining little bits of beauty to preps will b so important if u hav kids especially, keeping it warm and homey.

Have some way of keeping up with local news inside your home.

---------

Great point.

I have 2 battery operated radios (1 in a faraday cage) and a hand cranked emergency radio.

They really didn't cost me anything...I just never thru them away (they are about 30 years old).

It might be a good idea to take a look at things you buy once every 6 months or a year...like shoes or maybe a new pair of jeans.

Vitamin C neutralizes chlorine. It only takes a tiny amount to treat a whole gallon. 1 / 125th of a teaspoon per gallon. It works almost instantly.

You can extend the life of unopened boxed foods by dipping in melted wax in an old crock pot. Crackers, mac n cheese, ect.

Make your own vanilla. Add whole vanilla beans to a small bottle of vodka. Place in a dark cabinet. Remove the beans when it tastes right. It is much cheaper and you get real vanilla instead of imitation.

Someone earlier mentioned heating rocks. Just don't use the ones that have been sitting in water. They can explode.

If you don't already have one, get an oil lamp. The larger the better. They give off a good deal of heat.

Think of the children. In an extended emergency, they need things to occupy themselves. You can also can cakes in pint jars. Only pour batter about 1/3 full to allow room to rise. When done place sanitized lids and rings on the jars before you remove them from the oven.

Anytime there is canned food that you like on sale, grab a few extras.

There is a lot of water in your water heater. Turn off the breaker if it is electric. There is a place to attach a hose at the bottom. Make sure all the air is out if the power comes back on by opening a (hot) faucet before you turn the breaker back on. The heating element(s) will burn out if not covered by water.

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
I wanted to point out a great reason to prep.

In 2008, we were not close...it happened!

It really happened!

Banks were failing. Risky debt instruments (CDOs and MBSs) failed. Letters of payment were not being signed by banks so ships in port were not being unloaded.

Our entire system of trade locked up as if it had a heart attack!

You can bitch & moan about the bank bailouts...that's not my point.

My point is...that was not close...we actually went over the edge & somehow came back from the abyss.

That could have been it! (it should have been it).

We got really REALLY lucky!

Well, we can fall into our own personal abysses too. I had to EAT my food stores at one point as I got sick, lost my business, couldn't work...if I'd not had food put back it would have been a lot harder.
