Glad i saw this thread! What I am wondering about is if it all goes down, what I'll do about my hypothyroidism meds. Most hypo is caused by a lack of iodine, but i was born with it so Idk if thatd be sufficient for me...

I am in same boat as you and I have no answer. I just get my prescription filled for 3 months at a time which is cheaper.

Well...from what ive researched the main cause is due to little to no iodine in the diet....the standard American diet is depleted with this. In most cases, iodine supplementation such as kelp, lugols iodine solution, etc it can be fixed. When did you acquire it? I am worried bc I was born with it so Idk of that would fully help me....Idk if my body is capable of doing it without the meds. That, coupled with my docs comment(coupled with virtually no info.on it), has always stuck with me....

Rabbit is the only meat that is healthier, I think, but I cannot bear to eat bunnies. Had to as a child because my grandfather raised them. Did a couple times as an adult, then couldn't handle it any more.

Of course, if starving, a rabbit would probably seem like the very best thing I've ever eaten.

Yes, yes, yes... the stories I could tell! But, mix the honey (about 50/50) with and existing high quality salve... and use leaves (green, freshly picked) to wrap your wound (every 4 hours at first, twice daily once healing is started).

Food Insurance
2000 Calorie's, 1+ gallon of water a day. Shelter and Security.
730,000 calories, 400 gallons a year per person no showers or washed drawers. Water storage is $1 per gallon, plastic 1 gal $1, 300 gal hdpe $300, 500 gal $500, Used IBC totes food grade 325 gal $100 the way to go for a few thousand galls or less I have 3000 gals on hand, a thousand is on rain water recovery from 5000sqft of roof fills in 5 mins of good rain.

1st step to prep is Store bought prep's goal of 3 months of what you eat. On a budget buy a few extra every trip, canned meats, soups, stews, veggies, fruits, ect. Dry beans oats grains 1 year shelve life. I have thrown out a lot of this.

Long term food storage, Basic food.
[link to providentliving.lds.org (secure)]
The prices shown above is a case of 6 each # 10 cans in a case 25 year shelve life for most of what i buy. Save a lot and pick it up. The rice beans pasta is cheaper than store bought.

Long term food storage freeze dried, Entrees, soups, sauces, Baking mixes, Fruits, Veggies ect. I buy most of Aguston farms walmart or sams cheapest price free shipping.

Do the math when you buy servings, calories, costs per serving, calories per serving, serving size most other brands cost a lot more they will be a little cheaper but only 1/2 the servings and or a shorter shelf life. All packed deals include in the servings, a spoon of drink mix or milk as a serving. I got a lot of entrees.

Here’s a link about using colloidal silver to purify water.
 Quoting: aliasx

I love colloidal silver, but for water purification, I like hydrogen peroxide better... and it is crazy cheap.

It is what was used as an antibiotic before what is used today. It is or was used in eye drops when babies are born and the salve is used on burn victims. I have had great success using it for various things and to get rid of an infection from an abscessed tooth I couldn’t get hold of the dentist for. Worked within 24 hours.
 Quoting: aliasx

I have also given to my kitties. One for a weepy eye and another who was bit from an animal to clear up his infection. In both cases I put few drops in their food a few times a day for 3-5 days. Same with humans although some people take it daily. I only use when needed. Can be used topically as well.
 Quoting: Anymous Cowboy

Brilliant.

Also check Chlorine Dioxide, Hydrogen Peroxide, and Iodine + Sea Salt Solution for very similar uses.
 Quoting: Pooka

Never have heard of using peroxide for purifying water - it would sure taste better than using bleach! Tell us more, please.

I've never done anything with colloidal silver - know little about it and am frankly a little afraid of it. Glad it has worked so well for you and yours.
 Quoting: Penny Peppers

Pooka, don’t ever be afraid of colloidal silver. If I had to have ONE anti microbial for shtf, that would be it.

Oops. Somehow butchered that reply. Sleepy...

I’ve read up a lot about through the years and tried to educate myself of all the supplements etc but never found something that helped like the meds unfortunately. I was told that too I would die if I didn’t take ...eventually. I don’t know any alternative that works instead of the prescriptions. I only know things that compliment what you take. The statistics of women having is astronomical. Like you I can’t find any info regarding if you stop or what can be used in its place.

Canned cheese would be my total thing - I adore cheese. We only have a c ouple very small Mexican stores here - price would probably be prohibitive, right?

--------

There's that squirt on cheese that comes in a presurized can to squirt on crackers (bacon flavored)...and velveta doesn't need to be fridgitated until it's opened.

Then you have that cheese dip in a jar next to the fritos & nacho chips.
 Quoting: Mental Case

NUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU Neither of those are real cheese - velveeta is water and aluminum. I believe the canned type is too.

Nasty stuff, and aluminum is implicated in Alzheimer's.

[Check your antiperspirant - you may be soaking in aluminum on a daily basis!]
 Quoting: Pooka

I have so many boxes of velveeta in my pantry it’s not funny. During shtf, morale will be just as important as anything else. And what would be more comforting than some yummy Mac n cheese not from a box, hmm?

I have so friggin much things saved i could go for days

Something for preppers to consider, chard is very high in sodium for a vegetable so setting aside a pack or two of chard seeds and growing some in the garden will help provide natural salt (it pulls it from the soil) when the purchasable stuff becomes unavailable. Chard is also extremely easy to grow and collect the seeds from making it a long term source of salt.

 Quoting: Presqu'ile

It's delicious - try a little butter and vinegar, or only vinegar.

Easy to grow, and a good cool weather crop.

Great idea, Presqi!

Just found this!

Wanted to mention a couple things.

8 drops of bleach purifies a gallon of water.

Let dirty water settle, strain out the "chunks" and pour into a clean container. Add 8 drops of plain ole Clorox bleach. let sit a half hr.

Also, keep an eye open for natural "edibles" in your area, yard or neighborhood.

Every single variety of the Hosta plant is edible-leaves, shoots, flowers etc. I have a lot of the green and white striped ones in my yard. All edible. Also those orange daylilies that grow wild-edible flowers and tuber roots. Roots are like potatoes. roast or fry in oil.

Remember, you don't need much meat to flavor veggies. You would be surprisedat what can be foraged.

I had to research post apocalyptic survival stuff, and found out all this. I went out and dug up hostas and daylilly roots just to try it out. LOL

Herbal Therapies

FOR TREATING BURNS: Try fresh aloe vera for burns. Studies show that aloe vera helps new cells form and hastens healing. It is suggested you keep a plant on a sunny windowsill for treating minor (first degree) burns. To use, cut open one of the plant's fleshy leaves and squeeze out the clear gel, applying it directly to the affected area three or four times a day. Aloe vera heals best in the open air, so leave the burn uncovered.

FOR TREATING COLDS: Garlic can help prevent colds and help reduce symptoms because it contains a potent antibiotic called allicin, which is released when cloves of garlic are chopped, crushed, or chewed. You can add raw garlic to foods as a preventive measure or you can buy garlic supplements (which are available in most health food & drugstores). The best supplemental form is enteric-coated capsules, which are easier for the body to absorb. It is recommended that you follow label directions for dosage; a typical dosage is 300 milligrams daily for as long as symptoms persist.

FOR TREATING CUTS, SCRAPES, AND SCRATCHES: Keep an aloe vera plant on your windowsill (this is your living first aid kit). When you get a cut, scratch, or scrape, break off one of the plant's fleshy leaves, squeeze out a little of the cool, colorless gel from the center of the leaf, and apply it directly to the affected area. Reapply three or four times a day for maximum healing. Aloe vera seals off the injury, relieves pain, and helps cuts and scrapes heal more quickly.

FOR FIGHTING THE FLU: To ward off the flu at the first hint of symptoms, take echinacea, an herb with powerful antiviral and immunity-boosting effects. Echinacea is available in most health food stores in supplement form, as a tincture, and as a tea. Follow the dosage recommendations on the label of the product you choose. Echinacea works best over a short period of time. It isn't an effective immune strengthener when taken long term. It is suggested to limit usage of the herb for no more than a week.

FOR TREATING A HEADACHE: For a headache caused by stress, try a soothing cup of this tea: Blend one part each of dried herbs wintergreen, willowbark, and meadowsweet (available in most health food stores). Pour boiling water over a teaspoon of this blend, steep for ten minutes, strain, let cool to a drinkable temperature, and drink.

FOR TREATING HEARTBURN: For immediate relief of heartburn, make yourself a cup of ginger tea. Put 1/2 teaspoon of shredded fresh ginger in a cup of boiling water. Then let the ginger steep for about 10 minutes, strain the tea so that no ginger remains, cool to a drinkable temperature, and drink. You can also try this tea: Add two teaspoons of anise seeds, fennel seeds, or dill seeds to one cup of boiling water. Cover and steep for 5 to 10 minutes, then strain, allow the tea to cool, and drink a few teaspoons every few minutes.

FOR TREATING HIGH CHOLESTEROL: Scientific studies indicate that one clove of garlic or its equivalent, taken every day, is effective in reducing cholesterol levels. One way to get the equivalent is with garlic supplements. There are two advantages to these supplements: 1) The active ingredient in garlic, is best absorbed in supplemental form. 2) Taking supplements allows you to bypass the bad breath that can be an unfortunate side effect of eating fresh garlic. The most effect form for a garlic supplement is enteric-coated capsules, which pass through the stomach and dissolve in the small intestine. But no matter which form you choose, follow the dosage recommendations on the label.

FOR TREATING INSOMNIA: Herbal sleep formulas--in teas, tinctures, and capsules--are available in most health food stores. For best results, choose one that combines hops, valerian, chamomile, oats, passionflower, and balm. Follow the directions on the product label for proper dosage. Valerian, which reduces activity in the central nervous system, is the best-known herbal treatment for insomnia, and you could take that alone if the herbal formulas don't work. Most health food stores carry valerian products; follow the dosage recommendations on the label. Hops, a digestive tonic and sedative, may also help you relax. Purchasing dried hops flowers, putting them in a small muslin bag, and placing the bag under your pillow is recommended.

FOR TREATING MUSCLE CRAMPS AND PAIN: For massaging out muscle tension, this herbal massage oil is recommended: Start with one cup of extra-virgin olive oil or almond oil (available in most health food stores). Pour the oil into a bottle or jar and add the following herbs in tincture form: 1 ounce of cramp bark, 1/2 ounce of lobelia, and 1/4 ounce of willowbark or wintergreen. (If you don't have wintergreen tincture, substitute 30 drops of wintergreen oil). These ingredients are also available in most health food stores and through mail order.

FOR TREATING NAUSEA AND VOMITING: For mild nausea, drink ginger tea. To make the tea, slice a piece of fresh ginger and put a few shavings or slivers of it in a tea ball. Pour a cup of boiling water over it, steep for ten minutes, then allow it to cool before drinking. When nausea is more intense, try a stronger dose of ginger, available in gelatin capsules of 500 milligrams in most health food stores. Take one or two capsules every four hours, or follow label instructions for dosage.

FOR TREATING RASHES: Try dried chamomile to make a soothing wash for poison ivy, poison oak, or poison sumac rashes. Steep two tablespoons of dried chamomile in two cups of boiling water for about ten minutes. Let it cool, dip a washcloth in the wash, and spread it on the rash. You can use this remedy as often as you like.

FOR TREATING A SORE THROAT: Try gargling with goldenseal tea. To make the tea, pour boiling water over one to two teaspoons of the dried herb, which you can buy in most health food stores. Steep for 10 minutes, strain to remove the herb, and cool before using as a mouthwash. Sage is another good choice for a sore throat. Chop two teaspoons of fresh leaves, then pour boiling water over them and steep for 10 minutes. Strain the tea to remove the leaves and cool before using as a gargle. It is suggested that you repeat the gargles as necessary for a maximum of two to three days.

FOR TREATING STOMACHACHE: Peppermint and chamomile are two traditional herbal remedies for stomachache. Both work gently to soothe an upset stomach, stop stomach spasms, and reduce gas. Recommendation: You drink three to four cups of peppermint or chamomile tea daily to treat minor digestive problems. You can also sip a cup of either of these teas after meals to aid digestion. Peppermint and chamomile teas are available in tea bag form in most health food stores.

FOR TREATING STRESS: Siberian ginseng tones the nervous system and increases your resistance to stress. It is suggested taking this herb in either capsule or tincture form, following the dosage recommendations on the label. Siberian ginseng supplements are available in most health food stores.

FOR TREATING TOOTHACHE: Try oil of clove to soothe the pain until you can get to the dentist. But don't use it full strength, it's so strong that it can damage your tooth's nerve. Ask your pharmacist to recommend an over-the-counter preparation containing oil of clove (sometimes called eugenol), such as Orajel and follow the label directions for use.

FOR TREATING VAGINITIS: Try a Saint-John's-Wort or calendula salve to soothe the itching and irritation caused by vaginitis. These products are sold in most health food stores. Follow the application directions on the label.

 Quoting: aliasx

Well...from what ive researched the main cause is due to little to no iodine in the diet....the standard American diet is depleted with this. In most cases, iodine supplementation such as kelp, lugols iodine solution, etc it can be fixed. When did you acquire it? I am worried bc I was born with it so Idk of that would fully help me....Idk if my body is capable of doing it without the meds. That, coupled with my docs comment(coupled with virtually no info.on it), has always stuck with me....

I have so many boxes of velveeta in my pantry it’s not funny. During shtf, morale will be just as important as anything else. And what would be more comforting than some yummy Mac n cheese not from a box, hmm?
 Quoting: Penny Peppers

I know it’s supposed to be one of the most unhealthy things to eat but dam it I love Mac and cheese with it. You know if anything survives the end of the world it’s gonna be Velveeta and Cheese Wiz.

Mac and Cheese is a great comfort food, and we do need comfort foods. Mine at this time is the good brand of instant mashed potatoes - love that stuff for comfort and a full tummy.

Sea weed?

Like kelp? I could....its just so hard to find ANY info on coming off meds let alone anything about congenital hypothyroidism. My doc told me id die without my meds.
 Quoting: Justwhistlewhileyouwork

Please do your own research, because we cannot always believe our doctors. What do you take? Iodine? Or something to remove iodine? Surely you will not die without, and can find a great substitute that you can even be trying right now!
