I highly suggest everyone interested here should search and read article on the "Bosnian War survival stories". Great insight. hf

Is it in your files, Denholm? I'd be very happy to read it! Also where will I find One Second After? Looked for it in your PDFs but couldn't see it.

Thank you! hf

Read this if you are a prepper, this my worst fear here and yes it is coming one way or another.

An Economic Collapse Is Imminent – Whether It Happens In 2019, 2020 Or 2025: How to Prepare for the Next Great Economic Collapse – impossible

[link to basesdotcom.wordpress.com (secure)]

Five signs that an economic collapse is about to happen. They are:

Growing government debt: when an economy slows, the government usually steps in to help stimulate spending again, but with a high debt, the government might not be able to make that injection.

Stock markets trading at all-time highs: investors are taking more risk on the market, markets continue to trade higher meaning investments are bull-market driven and not research-based which could lead to a stock market bubble.

Unemployment rate: eligible worker, retirement, and student rates all identify trends in people not contributing to the economy and could slow down economic growth

Unstable government: this boils down to the leader and government team in the decisions and actions that may affect the economy in various ways

Rising national debt: this means less consumer spending in the economy and more money spent on paying debt.

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
I know that there are those who suggest buying ham radios and using them after a collapse without a license but here's something to think about:

An amateur radio license only takes $15.00 to get. And as long as you keep passing the exam you can get try for the next level license. So if you pass the Technician level you can take the test for General level in the same session for the same money.

There's tons of free study materials out there so the major cost of a license is the effort that you make to learn.

As for why you would do this - you get to practice with your equipment. Instead of pulling it out of a box and hoping that you can make it work. It's fun trying to contact the ISS and other satellites. Taking part in the nets build confidence and brings you in contact with others who are taking emergencies seriously.

The major drawback is that your address goes into a public database that anyone can search. It was a long time before I reconciled that with the benefits of a license. Just something else for you to think about.

Darth said: Yes, I hoard seeds. Every couple of years I buy one of those cans of survival seeds. However, I have found that the best crops to grow on my land are sunflowers and turnips. Will try planting wild rice this year in the swampy areas. The sunflowers grow so fast that I could get up to 3 crops per year.

My seed stores are very diverse. Could plant many acres.

Winters are mild. I see few snakes around here. I think the wild hogs love eating them. Of course, snakes are ideal survival prey.

Houston is big, but farther South along the swampy coast, density is much lower.

The bays are huge. Look up Matagorda and the Laguna Madre. There are many miles of coastal swamps to bug out in.

Bring your mosquito netting and repellent! Those salt water skeeters can stand flat footed and rape a turkey.

BTW, Matagorda Island is overrun with wild hogs.

Once again, I firmly believe in bugging in if at all possible.

So glad you have a good storage of seeds - with all your acreage, and possibly your neighbors' as well, you are in great agricultural shape.

How will you supplement a diet of sunflower seeds and turnips and perhaps wild rice? And how will you protect your crops? You certainly will have wonderful foods for barter if you can protect the crops from the desert. Perhaps you have cattle you can protect, as well as other sorts of seeds for salads and vegetables.

Love your humor with the skeeters and turkeys. I wrote a to a friend one time when I was in Alaska that I would love to send her a mosquito so she could see the size of it, but I couldn't afford the freight. LOL

I won't be coming your direction - I was thinking of others, perhaps closer to the area, who might need an escape plan.

Bugging in is by far my preference too - for myself as well as for anyone else, if at all possible. If I have to leave, it will be toward a forest, most likely, and I live in the PNW.

Thank you for the information - it was fun to read and may well help someone who is in or can get to that area!
 Quoting: Pooka

I did not mention the other crops. Many types of grain and vegetables will grow here. Far from desert, it is hot, humid, and swampy.

The biggest problem is the soil. The topsoil is thin and high in clay with poor permeability. You have to add sand, wood chips, or other material to improve it. Drainage is critical as well.

I have been experimenting with green manure crops. Last Summer, I planted mung beans which had been in the freezer for 9 years. I was amazed at the growth of the beans. Two pounds of dry beans grew into about 500 lbs. Legumes can definitely improve your soil.

As other posters have pointed out, you cannot just have some hand tools and a can of seeds and expect to see instant crops. It can take years to improve the soil adequately to plant high demand crops such as tomatoes.

I highly recommend the book, Gardening When It Counts, which shows you how to get crops when the soil is poor, dry, or whatever.

BTW, I have a tractor with a backhoe, so I tried using hugulkultur (look it up on utube) to improve my soil. It definitely works somewhat, but without a chainsaw and tractor, it would be a LOT of brutal hand labor. Hell, it was challenging using the machines. I dug shallow trenches, added tree trunks and wood chips, mixed the topsoil with fertilizer, and then scooped it up to make a raised bed. Forgot to add that melons grew great on this.

As for livestock, I have poultry and goats. Both will almost feed themselves in the right conditions. My goats come running when they hear my chainsaw because they know I will cut down some tasty brush and tree leaves for them.

As for defense, our small town will organize if required. Most of us know each other. I believe in organizing and guarding the perimeter of the town. In addition, we would use those with military experience to man OPs and run patrols. The common survivalist idea of people cowering in their homes waiting for the looters to attack is ludicrous.

Gen. Patton described the futility of purely static defenses.

Looters should be engaged at maximum range, not when they are at your doorstep.

Refugees should be taken care of to the extent possible. They can provide skills and labor to build shelters, grow food, or whatever. I will not give away free meals except to children. Adults can trade goods or labor for food.

Nope.

I use elephant garlic in some cooking...but regular raw garlic seems to work best for cold/flu/sinus infections, etc.

However, if I were single and very poor, I would consider bugging out in a canoe or other small boat.

I think a bugout canoe is a GREAT idea!

Lewis and clark did most of their exploring from canoes.

You can pack alot of preps/supplies in a canoe. & not many people are going to be looking to steal from you in the 2 seconds you go sailing past them.

Look into Ruth Stout gardening methods, many vids on youtube. Improves your soil dramatically with very little work. Not for all crops, but most.

If you decide to try, make sure to source your hay from someone natural or organic. Industrial hay can have toxic pesticides/herbicides that will ruin your food production from these chemicals. Also manure.

The plants take up the chemicals in the spray without issue, the hay is eaten by the animals without issue, but using hay or manure that has been subject to these chemicals can destroy your garden. The hay...the plant retains the chemical herbicides and as it decomposes in your garden will wreak havoc on whatever you grow as the chemicals are released, same with the manure.

You must source your hay carefully these days as these toxins were not around in Ruth Stouts day. But if you can get hay that's free of this, or straw, it is an almost no work garden that improves the soil dramatically.

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
As a final thought as I wind down for the day, my hubby brought up a good point.
If the survivalist day comes then ammo (bullets)will one day become very scarce.
So.. keep in the back of your mind to find other combat weapons that you will be able to use in case of need. This of course would be waaaay further down the road like if things weren't going to be normal again for a long time.

Now we started to discuss bows. You can become proficient with practice. Start asap?
Start simple and build up to the more game hunting ones.

Myself, I think that if you use your bows/arrows first providing you become a true shot would give the element of surprise cause equipping and using a bow doesn't make a sound to alert others in any bad area you might be in. Plus it saves on your ammo to use when you Really need it.

There is always an investment in a machine that makes ammo however this thread is not really for that cause.

You can actually create an arrow with a sharp knife, good branch and some feathers. Far fetched?? *giggles* What do you think?

Yes, it would be a WAYS after the SHTF...but better to look at it now.

Look up an ATLATL.

They take great skill to become proficient...but you could make one with fairly little effort.

They used them to hunt large game in the stone age.

You can see him use it on TV shows like "dual survival" and "Dude, you're screwed".

Saw him nail a wild boar from a fair distance with deadly accuracy.

I have read Ruth Stout.

No till sounds great, but the high clay soil would take many years to gain permeability. By adding wood chips and green manure with my tractor, I can speed that process.

I also found that my sandblast dealer had tons of ruined sand from the hurricane that he could not sell. He lets me haul it away in my trailer for nothing. Another good soil amendment.

I have considered going to the beach near Matagorda (Bryan Beach) to gather seaweed after a storm. That would make wonderful compost.

Yes, I aware of the problem of getting pesticides in hay or manure from animals raised on such hay which is contaminated with herbicides.

That is one reason I am trying to use hugulkultur. We have lots of trash trees such as Chinese Tallow that I am removing. The trunks, branches, etc. make good hugulkultur over a period of time. You have to add nitrogen to create good compost because the wood is so high in carbon.

After Hurricane Harvey the crews came through clearing trees and branches away from power lines. I asked them what they were doing with the chips.

They said they had to haul the chips a few miles to the dump.

I offered them some fresh eggs from my chickens and ended up with over 100 cubic yards of chips. I added nitrogen and NPK to the piles which have now become good compost.

People, I believe it is time to be tightening up, and quickly. Get what you need, be done with purchasing/finding. Time to organize what you have, if you have not done this already.

If there is any possibility you will have to leave your shelter in the near future, time to make the list of what will go - and a diagram of your vehicle will be helpful, to understand what you will stow where, to maximize space and take as much as you can.

For about 24 hours I've been thinking of this need to leave shelter, considering what has to go. Every little bit I remember something else I have to take - so it really is going to require a list, and awareness of what will be put into what to carry to the vehicle - grocery bags on hand? Empty totes?

I vote for totes - if things have to be set outside the vehicle to allow people room to sleep, stowing the totes with their sealing lids near or under the vehicle is a great plan.

Have foam to sleep on? Good thing to have for warmth and comfort. Grab all the bedding you can - may need it for warmth, especially if departure is in this weather.

I very much like the archery idea - and to use arrows first - saving all the bullets. Arrows in the beginning are silent and will take wildlife and wild life by surprise. Long into the crisis, when people have spent their bullets and are reduced to clubs, bullets will have the long reach needed, and will take by surprise any marauders.

Using arrows for meat in the very beginning is great wisdom, so as not to scare away all other meat forms. Later, when meat has become far more scarce, bullets will be fine.

The news today is just not looking pleasant - and it's a time for tremendous watchfulness. Everybody share here if you find further news.

Buying the Iron Dome is ONLY for immediate defense of rockets - and we have urgent need?? So we are about to be under attack - be wise as a serpent and gentle as a dove.

I read somewhere today and thought what a terrific idea - do not go for any "new friend" coming into your orbit now. Accept nobody who just happens along, or says they are a friend of x person. Wary wary wary.

You just reminded me of a foam chair I have that folds out into a bed! I forgot about that thing, but it's really comfy!

I was just thinking grabbing couch cussions if needed.

I also ran to axeman surplus store today & picked up some tubing for a siphon for my 55 gallon water drum...I know I already have some tubing...but I can't remember where I put it.

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
Finding peace.

Sometimes we need to find it in troubleing times!

How do you find peace & comfort?

I like to sing! I'm not good at it...but I still enjoy it!

I've been working on a hard song lately...so many voice inflections...We're all alone by rita coolidge.

It cracks me up because you actually have to move and shift your body to be able to hit some of the pitch inflection/changes in the song :)

Have foam to sleep on? Good thing to have for warmth and comfort. Grab all the bedding you can

Good job on both! You will probably find the other tubing and then have a spare - always a great idea!

Singing is one talent with which I was not gifted, to my disappointment! Good for you!

Did you read the other threads of news of the day? We'd all better start singing, fast!

Oh my.. I pulled that one up on YT.
You are right..It is a very diverse tune. But so beautiful as I first remembered it.

Love to go out to sea! With a large distance between us and all those who are out to get us, get our nation, get our way of life, but we'd better stick it out and fight to survive.

I have a tendency to get to a point where enough is enough and I simply have to do something about the situation.

I believe that to do nothing when somebody is harming another is the same as giving your approval of it.

Sometimes people just need to be told "NO"!

Unfortunately, some need to be clubbed over the head before they hear the word "NO".
