Capillary action would draw the oil from the lower pan into the upper pan, leaving behind any solid contaminants.

I'll bet that works...but today, there's one problem with it.
Today, motor oil is two-thirds lubricating additives...the oil itself is not good enough for todays high tech engines...you need the additives & they burn off with use.
Way back then that wasn't the case.
