Good chance of power outages - my least favorite because no heat,

---------

Maybe it will be time to "play fort" :)
 Quoting: Mental Case

I don't actually have the right furniture or configuration for it, and there's no possibility I could get down on the floor and back up again. However, I have a down comforter put away, and we could sure make a fort out of that right on my lovely memoryfoam bed!

Snowing like crazy here now. Need to have a shower before anything goes south.

but a few thoughts of small stuff for your preps.

Tic Tacs or breath mints...you'll be really glad to have them.

Nails & screws, never know when you'll have a need, and you can use a rock if need be.

Needles and thread

Mirror

Hair ties

garbage bags, garbage bags, garbage bags..takes almost no space and sooo many uses. poncho, tent/lean to, ground cover, water bags (double if you can)..tons of uses, big and small.

Yes, garbage bags of every size and color and kind. Too bad they arent made in camouflage - or maybe they are! Green to blend in spring and early summer, brown for fall and maybe winter - not a bad thought.

Here are photos and even video of what is happening right now in my general area - this is why I keep telling people if you think you will wait until trouble hits and then go buy your preps - you are in an imaginary world which will have you dead in short order. Pay attention, PLEASE, if you want to save your life.

Thread: Panic At Grocery Stores!!!! All Shelves Are EMPTY!!!! Pictures!!!!!!!
 Quoting: Pooka

Once I went to a local big-box store in the advance of a major winter storm, not because I needed to get anything but because I wanted to watch human behavior in such an event.

The dairy section was completely empty and some poor kid who had done something to incur his supervisor's ire was tasked with pushing a cart of milk into the middle of the floor.

There was a palpable rush to strip the cart bare in mere seconds. I had to step lively to avoid the swarm. It was an event of scant seconds and then there was no more.

If you wait, you go hungry.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 76566025

Human nature - right now for our area buying more than is needed - though Seattle and north may need it longer by far - and then not buying anything in advance of the next rush.

That must have been fun - watching how it went - but a heartache, too, knowing how many are going to starve or be killing others who have done the right thing all along.

Have a look - if you are in California - 100 inches of rain?

--------

I hope people are aware if they are downstream of a dam.
 Quoting: Mental Case

Scroll up two posts - gotcha!

The main thing is not dams - it is mudslides, because all the trees were cut down for views and for building more homes, all the elite preferring these elite areas, you see.

Thus there are no tree roots to hold the hillsides in place, and the mud comes down killing and maiming and destroying.

Happens every year, but if this amount of rain is correct, deaths will be in the thousands.

I still think it would be a riot to do your last minute prepping by drive-thru.

Hi, I'd like 145 cheeseburgers and 30 big macs please...and make it snappy!
 Quoting: Mental Case

Sweetie, that is so far out there I don't even know what to say.

Maybe what we need is for you to explain here what sort of "emergency" you are planning for, so that people understand it is not for the kind of disaster most of us have in mind, by watching the world. We aren't worried about snowstorms - as you can tell by what's happening around my house today LOL - or any simple thing like that. Those are temporary inconveniences you are prepping for.

We are planning for things we will not be coming back from. There will be no more "life as we know it" but it will be ONLY about survival. There is no "in a few days the stores will be full again" or any such calm, ordinary event. Many people will die within the first few days - that's the kind of things we prep for. People will be killing people immediately, to get whatever they have. This includes in and around stores - and they will even be stealing televisions and electronics, not understanding they will not be using them.

Please understand, for us, there is NO last-minute prepping. We know better. It's not a snowstorm, it's the collapse of the country.

Did you watch any of the news or videos of the last hurricane? Did you see the people with guns outside dollar stores? They were running off other people who also thought they would loot. Just for dollar store junk!!! The gun owners weren't about to let more people take "their" stuff away from them. That was just a hurricane - not that it was good or easy for anyone - but I want you to understand that a weather event can bring out the guns and the desperation, and people with sense were in their homes, out of harm's way, already prepared. Just for weather! Not for bank shut downs, EMPs, armed troops, or any of the things we know may be happening very soon.

Pooka, you asked me a few pages back to 'refresh your memory?' It was about my friend Joe who sold the used tools and made enough out of that to buy property all over the state. You said you'd like to do something like that and then I said yes, you could do that too. That's all it was.

A note about homemade salve and this is very important - I learnt the hard way once, lol.
When you've strained your herbs out of the oil and set it to reheat a little so you can melt the beeswax into it, do not take your eyes off of it! If it gets too hot, it can burst into flames!

Once, I had mine on a small propane burner, and like all gas burners, it can sneak up a little bit without you knowing. Every single one I've ever used does that to some degree so if all you want is to heat and not to 'cook,' do not take your eyes off it for a second. I got busy with something else on that day and next thing I knew, there was a big flame jumping up above the burner, scared the shit out of me.

For grid power, a small hot plate on low is much more dependable and for off grid, there is always a spot on your woodstove that is cooler than others. Let your fire burn down a bit and rake your coals away from that spot; then you have more freedom to move around.:)

It occurred to me awile back that a pair of binoculars might give you just enough time to get away. Say you are on your commute to or from work. Traffic comes to a stop on the interstate. Use the binoculars to find out why. I have a very good one that compacts into a size small enough to fit in a flannel shirt pocket. Would be useful if you did have to vacate your vehicle. That is another reason to always know where you are. Know which way to safety.

You're quite right. Eclairs, Mental Case? Now, I like them as well as the next sweet-addict but I always hear one thing in my head from my boarding school days in Switzerland when I think about making any and have to laugh: We students had to make the (overcomplicated) things in a cooking class - putting both 'shell' and filling batter through a sieve, of all ridiculous tortures. I was whipping cream and apparently started to overdo it, then heard a screech from the elderly teacher (who was always at least half drunk at these classes) saying, 'vous faites du beurre!' and of course, I was, so I guess the first thing I really learnt to make was butter.:) A useful skill, after all. Have you tried this mason jar method?

Then, if you have canning jars, can some fresh butter. I've noticed the 'canned butter' in online stores is horrendously expensive.

Wouldn't it be lovely to have fresh butter, canned yourself, when worst comes to worst and there it is as a lovely treat, as well as giving your body the blessing of great fats? This is marvelous!

 Quoting: Pooka

Great fats is right! That 'low fat' propaganda was a truly evil conspiracy. The trail riders of the pioneer days always carried fat and sugar with them, mixed up into lumps. It might be any kind of fat they could get but they knew better than to travel in a hard winter without it. The sugar acted as much as preservative for the fat as a source of quick energy and the fat kept them from exhaustion and freezing to death.

And then there's clarified butter, that keeps well in hotter weather; just needs to be kept out of the light, of course, like anything else we can and put up. Even lactose-intolerant people can eat butter in this form with no trouble at all:

True ghee is actually a longer process to make than mere clarified butter since traditionally it starts with the raw milk, which is nearly impossible for most of us in the States to easily (or legally) obtain to which a culture is added. Here's a vid showing those differences, and as the guy in the vid says, don't forget to 'glorify the cows' :)

Surely nobody sane would toss those milk solids out after clarifying that butter! You should have a bread sponge, biscuit batter, pie pastry or a nice dish of vegetables ready to catch them.

Have been following with interest, but probably have not read every post.

I've been buying "fish" antibiotics for years. Try to keep amoxicillin and cephalexin on hand for minor stuff as well as for preps.

However, today when I went to Amazon, I couldn't find cephalexin at all and only some VERY expensive amoxicillin from a new dealer. Maybe their policy has changed? I know Petco stopped carrying them years ago because (Oh, my Gawd, can you believe it...) they suspected we were doing what we're doing. Anyone got a good cheap source?
 Quoting: Kamchatka

Oh boy. "They" are onto us! I don't know a source - the last feed store in this town closed a year ago. Try eBay - their motto used to be, and should still be, "If it's on your mind, it's on eBay". I use them for almost everything.

 Quoting: Pooka

After a bit of research, Thomas Labs also sells direct. They add a bit for shipping, so they're probably a bit higher, but it's a good resource to know about and they have a good variety of antibiotics.

Thank God I'm rural, so the local farm and home store is good for injectibles like penicillin. But, of course, if SHTF, that'll be about as good as trying to forage for wild lettuce in an ice storm.
More deplorable all the time.

One of my great uncles thought he was going to 'go into the cattle business' once long ago. What he ended up with was a whole herd of pets, all of whose names he knew and they'd come running up to him just like dogs. Animal sanctuaries run strong in Mother's side of the family. From what I've seen, you have to like getting up before 4:00 in the morning, every day, if you're going to milk cows.

Preserving eggs is one thing I've never tried! (cringe) I was too afraid of making a botch of it. I did find a link about it on Off the Grid News:
[link to www.offthegridnews.com (secure)]
another about that mineral oil method:

Those 100-year-old eggs the Chinese do make me want to run away screaming, from the mere idea.:) But, though the taste sucks when you buy them already packaged (as in military rations) those powdered eggs don't seem so bad so I might try those.

Have you tried 'water glassing?' This isn't a 3-minute soundbite - for those who like them shorter. This young matron explains everything thoroughly, which makes sense to me for anyone who's actually going to try messing about with hydrated lime.

Pooka, it's occurred to me suddenly to ask if you have some version of a 'hanging pocket organizer.' Here's one from Amazon (I know people pick on Bezos here but I really use the hell out of my Prime membership:))
[link to www.amazon.com (secure)]
this is an interesting store, but the price is higher; still, it gives one an idea:
[link to www.containerstore.com (secure)]

For everybody: just type that search term in and you're going to see at least a hundred varieties, sizes, brands and prices of this. Posters here brought some excellent reminders to stock little bitty things that can be hard to find under stress: pins, needles, tweezers, clippers, dental floss, etc.

I have one of these for finding little things that tend to get lost in drawers and just love it - so much so that I sent my mother one too, immediately. If you put the little items in these transparent pockets, you can always find what you're looking for and can grab them all like a suitbag too - which can be gently rolled up and stuffed in a trash bag for bugout transport.
This is cool. English subtitles:

If you put the little items in these transparent pockets, you can always find what you're looking for and can grab them all like a suitbag too - which can be gently rolled up and stuffed in a trash bag for bugout transport.
This is cool. English subtitles:

Believe it or not, years ago, before I knew such a thing existed commercially, I made my own, for tools. Laid out a flat piece of fabric, denim to be exact, then used strips of denim, laid out my tools, marked where to sew the strips to fit the tools, and VOILA! I think I wore that one out, and made a new one. It's hanging on the wall in the garage just inside it from the kitchen door, and everything is there - hammer, saw, wrenches, everything, right where you can see them, plus two big pockets on the bottom for things that don't fit in the strips, like coils of wire and such.

This would work for anything - could be cleaning tools, or the things as in the illustrations - hair items, anything. So handy and so easy to make if you sew.

Clear plastic thick enough to sew is available if you wish to have transparent pockets.

I'm not in the least surprised that you would think of it and act on it too but a lot of people don't so it's worth trying to make things easier for them. Those for the tools have actually been around much longer, a modification of the basic toolbelt, made from heavy canvas, but it seemed to take forever for manufacturers to get around to the idea that every household has lots of other uses for these things. They can eliminate that universal household vortex into which whole cities have disappeared: the junk drawer.:)

So what kind of thread did you use for your denim operation? What size needle? Denim, if it's the good American kind, can be damn tough to punch through, in my experience, so if you have any tricks to make that easier on the hands, I need all the help I can get.

I like silk thread better than any other for sewing, not just for embroidery but everything else too, because it doesn't ball up into knots, shed lint or break so easy as cotton does. Linen is good too, if you can get it - I use only old linen table cloths for pastry cloths. I can flip a strudel dough over that's so thin you can read through it with that cloth and it doesn't stick at all. No lint either.

I don't sew much anymore except for mending that I must do, or reinforcing stitching that I know is going to come apart soon if I don't. I have to do it by hand, don't have a machine or room for one yet - Mother and I are talking about getting a much bigger place together before we get any older and weaker. If TSHTF before we can arrange that, I'm just going to kidnap her to get her out of a town.:)

Akshully, was it not a fifth continent that was lost in a junk drawer years ago? Seems like I read that somewhere . . .

I used my sewing machine, whatever needle was in it for normal sewing, and ordinary cotton thread. I stitched several times in places I knew would have the most stress, of course.

Cannot imagine you having to hand-sew everything! Please consider a sewing machine. They can be acquired from a sewing repair shop, from a thrift shop, from Amazon very inexpensively. Your hands will thank you! Not to mention the fun you will have, sewing all the projects you have wanted to do, and all the other projects you find! But please do it before an EMP!

Yes, I think many people might not have realized they could sew something so easily with such a magnificent result as to declutter any place they want decluttered, except maybe under the kitchen sink. You are most kind to have thought of it for everyone, especially since organization is likely to be very important before and during SHTF.

Would you and your mother enjoy living together? In my view two women in one kitchen is a bad plan. LOL Probably laundry room as well, and yard/garden. Really, if it would be helpful to both of you and not damaging to your relationship, sharing expenses and helping each other might be perfect! If you could acquire a residence outside any city, that would be a very wise move. Cities are not where anyone who knows what's going on in the world want to be or should be.

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
Denholm, have to thank you again for reminding me to check the batteries in my crank radio. I got into it today and am blessed all over the place.

Reading instructions reminded me of why I ordered this particular radio in the first place - it was widely acknowledged as the very best possible SHTF radio at the time, and I suspect may still be.

It's a Voyager V1 with solar charging, dynamo [crank] charging, adaptor charging, USB computer charging. It will also charge cell phones and vape kits. It has a flashlight, as well, and an earphone jack [for stealth listening]. It receives FM, AM, SW1 and SW2 world receiver.

Now, if it only had the coffee ready in the morning too . . .

I looked at the batteries - there are two compartments. The rechargeables are sealed in heavy plastic and not allowed to connect until owner is ready. There is also a compartment with AAA batteries installed. They appear fine, with no leaks or bulges, but likely have to be replaced anyway.

I was surprised to see how efficient I'd been at purchasing this particular radio - since I have learned much more about what I am prepping for, and what the needs will be - this radio is a genuine winner!

I'll leave the rechargeables sealed until putting the radio into use.

So, Denholm and others, comments? Questions?

if you store your devices that are not being used with batteries in them, turn the batteries around so + is minus and so forth.
