...

Is it just the ads on top or bottom of GLP page, or are there more coming at you?

So sorry this is happening, but it will change - I'm sorry it's taking so long and I think Trin knows he'd better get something moving soon or he might lose people.
 Quoting: Pooka

Pooka, there are multiple ads interspersed in the thread, even within individual posts. It is maddening.

I can't stand ads. 25 years ago, I told my wife that ads would be the death on the Internet.

You mentioned butane cans. A few days ago, I saw a huge display of them at the local Walmart. They were the 'push and twist' connection type used by those tabletop stoves they also sell.

My daughter in Japan was asking if they are available here in the states, she was looking for the threaded connection type. I know I have seen those as well, mostly in the smaller mom & pop stores.
 Quoting: Crunch62

Look online for AdBlocker - I've been trying to remember which one I have and i think that's it. Free download and VOILA!!! Freedom from ads!! Now I understand why your hair became so gray over the past few days and why you are walking bent over suddenly! THis will fix you right up!
 Quoting: Pooka

I am running a free version of ad blocker, but these GLP 'super ads' aren't affected.

How did you now I an walking bent over recently?

I have an old back injury that recurs once in a while and it has been giving me Hell for the past few days.
 Quoting: Crunch62

How do you explain my not getting the ads and you are? Makes no sense to me. Try finding a different free ad blocker and see if that works better.

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
I invited those new to the subject of prepping to come here, and begin at page one, which of course they will not do, so we may be answering repeated questions.

Anything we can do to help people be ready is a blessing.

----------

No problem. The more we help others prepare the less they will start losing it like they are in venezuela.

Drinking sewage water? These people are in a panic and not thinking...and it's going to cost them their lives!

If there's any info we can offer to prevent that from happening to any people here...I'm more than happy to help!

Those poor folks really need to take a deep breath & think logically, rather than making stupid decisions in the heat of panic.
 Quoting: Mental Case

They've waited too long without water to be able to think straight now. Many will have at least sipped the water without any purification, and likely given it to desperate children as well. There will be more terrible diseases in no time.

Nobody has indicated yet that they've come for help but just maybe they actually started at the beginning of the thread.

Absolutely correct!!! And a health care professional told me that once we feel thirsty, we are already in beginning dehydration, so we need to drink regularly, thirsty or no.

Remember the post of yesterday, folks, too, when I recommended having juices and other drinks on hand.

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
One of the things I believe we are seeing in VZ is "learned helplessness". Many people waited. Just waited. "Somebody will come and rescue us."

That's the big difference between "them" meaning others here in our country, and "us", meaning those who prepare for less than optimal conditions.

We don't expect someone to bring us water, so we won't sit here without until we are so desperate with thirst that we will go drink sludge from a filthy stream or very old abandoned swimming pool, not even able to take time to purify it. And they are very unlikely to have means to purify it, with no stoves working.

We might be rescued eventually. We will more likely remain alive until that happens if we STAY IN and do not try going out for any reason. Eventually things will shake into place and water and food may well be delivered. Of course so might buses - and no, we do not need a ride on a bus to a "safe place", thank you.

My parents dealt with drinking water issues after the 1994 Northridge earthquake in So Cal.

They were told the city water was not safe for consumption.

They had to bring jugs to the National Guard water trailers to get potable water. This went on for months.

A good reason to store lots of potable water. The cost of some food-grade drums may seem excessive, but having them full reduces the urgency of thirst.

I will celebrate page 100 by telling you that several months ago I put 3,000 cash in smaller bills in a little flexible fireproof container we ordered, and hid it somewhere safe. I am only 64 and didnt think my memorory was this bad but I cant remember where. You need to prep cash. Lol. Ive been tearing the first floor apart. Hubby is taking it really well but we are not rich. He did make me show him and the trusted kids where the silver is again just to be sure, so that's ok. But sure wish i could find the cash. I guess i should be glad i found the big stash of matches....if the grid goes down matches might be worth more than gold.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 74211141

Have you tried to find the container using a metal detector?
If you don't have one, maybe a neighbor does, or sometimes there are local detector clubs or dealers that may be able to help. If you mention it, I would probably minimize the amount to around $300 max if you are telling someone you do not know.

I got mine from some people that bought them for Y2K prep. They decided they didn't need them anymore, and I paid about $10 each for 55 gallon drums.

Guess my concern would be the use the first owner made of the container, before selling on CL. No guarantees, of course.

In your case you had reason to trust the barrels. Not always so.

A portable generator with a 240v output should run your well pump. Not that it's cheap to get the wiring you need to do so safely and with the ability to go back and forth between main power and generator power as necessary (roughly $1,000). In a really dire emergency you could theoretically splice the wires manually if you knew what you were doing, but I DO NOT recommend this! If you make a mistake you could blow both the well pump and short out the generator.

Even with that capability, I still have 90 days of potable water stored in our shelter, just in case it's not safe to run the generator.

Ninety days' water is outstanding! If by sixty days in no replacements have arrived, you have thirty days to find other sources, while still having plenty for drinking, cooking, toothbrushing, etc. I applaud you! I'm hoping to hit sixty days with my buckets plus what else I have.

Again, remember to collect juices, iced teas, whatever drinks appeal to you other than sodas, and that have at least some nutritional content.

Is everybody remembering to have real honey put away? As a bandage, as an antibiotic, as all kinds of things, not to mention outstanding nutrition.

Honey, peanut butter, peanuts, jerky, and other high-protein long-shelf-life items. You do have to be careful with real juices as they can sometimes have a short shelf-life (check the expiration dates). But vitamin waters aren't a bad idea. Also, stock up on some flavored drink mixes like Kool-Aid. There's no nutritional benefit but they are cheap, and they are priceless as a morale-booster to mask the bad taste of stored water.

Most people's water supply can be extended in a pinch by doing two things:
1: Save all "gray" water from brushing teeth, washing dishes, bathing, etc. It can be recycled and used to flush toilets or for other similar tasks to extend the drinking water supplies.

2: Save all urine in empty bottles and add a drop or two of bleach water for storage. Urine can be distilled for perfectly clean and safe drinking water. Gray water can be distilled as well.

Love the snacks, which boost morale, as well as energy. Good idea to check expiration codes on juices and everything else.

There are healthier flavor mixes for water than KoolAid and all that sugar. Try some with honey.

Totally right on the gray water for flushing - always!

Urine for drinking water - not for me, thank you. That's why I have all the other stuff! I believe you about it, I'm just not willing. Not my own urine nor anyone else's.

If stored water doesn't taste great, just pour back and forth between containers to re-oxygenate and improve flavor. Also can add a pinch of Vitamin C for similar purpose, especially if purified with a form of bleach.

The nuts are such a good idea, as is peanut butter. Protein which we will definitely need for muscles, for healing, for energy.

Nice job, RiffRaff!

RiffRaff said: Honey, peanut butter, peanuts, jerky, and other high-protein long-shelf-life items.

I thought I would add a few ideas that have worked for me:

1. 55 gal. drums. I have a business that uses acids, caustic soda, etc. that come in 55 gal. HDPE drums. A lot of businesses use such and would be happy to be rid of the empty drums. Ask nicely and you may get a few. Rinse at least 3 times with water and they are perfectly safe. For example, hydrochloric acid is what they use in swimming pools. Each rinsing lowers the concentration of any residue by a factor of 100. Therefore, 3 rinses equals one millionth of the original residue. The drums are great for storing water.

2. Cut 55 gal. drums in half to get extra large, extra strong planters. I drill a few holes to act as drains. Great for growing veggies if you only have a patio.

3. Cut larger holes in the sides of a drum to use for potatoes. Plant in the bottom. As the potatoes grow, poke the vines out the holes in the sides and add more dirt on top. You can grow over 50 lb. of potatoes in one drum.

4. Steel drums, especially with removable lids, make great storage containers. I purchase these for as little as $9 each locally. They are rat and bug proof. You can store sugar in mylar bags inside in a barn or garage. Salt, vinegar, and other stuff not affected by heat.

You can also add kitty litter and a bit of bug spray and disinfectant to the bottom. Put newspaper over that and load in winter clothing, camping gear, etc. for long term storage. Beats the hell out of a plastic tote from Wally Mart that will fall apart after a few years. BTW, the kitty litter is to absorb moisture. Bug spray is obvious. Disinfectant to eliminate mold/mildew.

Even full drums of grain in bags or whatever can be moved with a two wheel dolly.

Also, steel drums are ideal for old computers, etc, to protect them from EMP.

Thank you so much for this, Darth! I would love to take some of those drums off your hands for planting! Wish we were closer!

This is totally new information to most of us, about what can be made safe for water and foods! So great of you to share your expertise! I would not have taken a chance on one, without this post from you!

GodBlessYa, where did you find the three-minute pasta? Helper and I both looked today at Walmart and there was nothing of that brand, nor any other package that mentioned limited cooking time.

Thank you very much for the photos. Nothing like any of that at Walmart today. Nothing on eBay, surprisingly. Only one, and that very questionable, on Amazon. I'd say you were very, very fortunate!
 Quoting: Pooka

Call your local grocery stores and ask if they have it. All of them have it here, but walmart does not carry it.

Looked at grocery store ads in your area and was floored...

4 lbs of sugar...1.59 on sale.. $4 on sale here
ribeye 5.99 lb on sale----$12 on sale here
potatoes 33¢ a lb----.99¢ here on sale
potatoes 50lbs $15.00! biggest bag here 10lb, on sale $5
onions 33¢ lb.....1.99 lb here!
bunch of cilantro 59¢ .....1.99 here
avocados 59¢, here 1.25 on sale, sometimes 1.00 but they are soft and no good

and so forth

I was stunned.

But anyhow, call around, i'll bet the local groceries have it.

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
My parents dealt with drinking water issues after the 1994 Northridge earthquake in So Cal.

They were told the city water was not safe for consumption.

They had to bring jugs to the National Guard water trailers to get potable water. This went on for months.

A good reason to store lots of potable water. The cost of some food-grade drums may seem excessive, but having them full reduces the urgency of thirst.
 Quoting: Crunch62

you can find drums on craigs list for cheap
 Quoting: godblessya!

What is the guarantee they are safe for potable water?
 Quoting: Pooka

You buy them or get them from food places, not chemical mfrs, lol. Usually they are labeled or you pick up directly from the business. It's pretty easy to tell what the content was as you generally have to clean them out yourself.
