Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
I thought I would add a few ideas that have worked for me:

1. 55 gal. drums. I have a business that uses acids, caustic soda, etc. that come in 55 gal. HDPE drums. A lot of businesses use such and would be happy to be rid of the empty drums. Ask nicely and you may get a few. Rinse at least 3 times with water and they are perfectly safe. For example, hydrochloric acid is what they use in swimming pools. Each rinsing lowers the concentration of any residue by a factor of 100. Therefore, 3 rinses equals one millionth of the original residue. The drums are great for storing water.

2. Cut 55 gal. drums in half to get extra large, extra strong planters. I drill a few holes to act as drains. Great for growing veggies if you only have a patio.

3. Cut larger holes in the sides of a drum to use for potatoes. Plant in the bottom. As the potatoes grow, poke the vines out the holes in the sides and add more dirt on top. You can grow over 50 lb. of potatoes in one drum.

4. Steel drums, especially with removable lids, make great storage containers. I purchase these for as little as $9 each locally. They are rat and bug proof. You can store sugar in mylar bags inside in a barn or garage. Salt, vinegar, and other stuff not affected by heat.

You can also add kitty litter and a bit of bug spray and disinfectant to the bottom. Put newspaper over that and load in winter clothing, camping gear, etc. for long term storage. Beats the hell out of a plastic tote from Wally Mart that will fall apart after a few years. BTW, the kitty litter is to absorb moisture. Bug spray is obvious. Disinfectant to eliminate mold/mildew.

Even full drums of grain in bags or whatever can be moved with a two wheel dolly.

Also, steel drums are ideal for old computers, etc, to protect them from EMP.
 Quoting: darth

Thank you so much for this, Darth! I would love to take some of those drums off your hands for planting! Wish we were closer!

This is totally new information to most of us, about what can be made safe for water and foods! So great of you to share your expertise! I would not have taken a chance on one, without this post from you!
 Quoting: Pooka

I would not use a drum that contained hydrocarbons such as mineral spirits. That taste is hard to eliminate.

The acid drums such as hydrochloric and sulfuric are the easiest to clean and use safely.

Search for drums on Craigs or whatever. Most are overpriced, but you can bid lower.
 Quoting: darth

Thank you for the suggestions!

Don't Forget These Supplies

Let me start off by saying I try to plan for the worst but hope for the best. For me I figure the worst case scenario is I have to leave my home and go live in the mountains. Seriously, I hope that NEVER happens, but if it does I want to be prepared. Then if it never happens, well I am totally prepared for anythings less that might disrupt our current happy situation.

With that in mind, I have tried to store supplies that would keep us alive, and perhaps even somewhat comfortable, while living in a displaced situation. I am assuming that most people already have a list of things that you would obviously need like toilet paper, cleaning supplies, toiletries, fuel, shelter, etc. so I haven't included those obvious items in this list. This is a list of things you might not have thought of but that you might desperately need.

I actually keep a separate supply of kitchen items in my garage. Crazy I know but if we had to evacuate in a hurry for whatever reason, I don't want to be standing in my kitchen trying to think what I need to bring. Everything I need to bring is on the shelves in my garage.

Here are a list of things you might forget to store that could be invaluable.

Hot Pads
Strainer
Serving Utensils
Measuring Cups/Spoons
Silverware
Cookware
Canning Supplies
Something to haul water
Scissors (utility and hair cutting)
Garbage Bags
Ziplock Bags & Tinfoil
Tarps & Ropes
Washboard & Wash tub
Clothes Line & Pins
Dish and Laundry Soap
Sponges
Towels
Lantern
Ax
Lighters
Hunting Supplies (Rifle, Knives, etc)
Shovel
Basic Tools (Hammer, nails, etc)
Scriptures
Hymn Book
Mosquito Repellent
Sunscreen
Rubber Bands
Face Masks
Nail Clippers & File
Information Binder (This is a binder that contains all your family's important paperwork and contact information. Mine also contains flash drives with all of our family photos)
Fresh journals to record your experiences
Pens and pencils

As I began reading your list and came to scissors, which is on my list already, I had the thought - hair - RUBBER BANDS!!! and then find them on your list too!

For keeping hair out of eyes. For fastening things to other things. For all manner of purposes! Packages of mixes sizes are readily available and bound to be invaluable!!

Thank you, ac friend, for the good list!

I'm worried about GodBlessya. She didn't answer emails last night nor today, and hasn't been on tonight.

Very worrisome. Remember when she hit her nose very hard on the car window? It's remained very painful. Just worries me, as well as her silence.

RiffRaff, when you reported posts last night, did you get double greens each time? If so, they received double or triple reds. I'm smiling.

Oh dear. Thought she mentioned it in the thread. If not - Gby, forgive me, dear.

Yes, she had an almost fall, and hit her nose and took a nick out of her forehead. She was so shocked she didn't t hink it was a big problem, but it's still sore.

She's probably fine, but I would sure like to hear from her - no email, no PM.

I even emailed her this morning when the thread came up about no Verizon texts on the east coast, telling her that if she has Verizon not to worry if she couldn't text.

No replies.

I survived. :)

So good to see you!!!!

Speaking of nail clippers as somebody just did, today I stopped on the Res and bought cigarets. As I was leaving, a woman called to me and she was sitting behind a table. Said because of the brand I bought [the cheapest, naturally] I could pick a gift. They were just little things - like little advertising stuff, but of all things there was a little kit in a hard plastic case with a key ring on it, containing nail clippers, small scissors, and tweezers. DOn't recall if there was something else in it. You KNOW I grabbed that - how perfect!!! I have others of those items, but not in one lovely protective hard case with a ring on it!

Really glad you are okay - sorry you are having to work so much. Please take care of yourself and remember to be drinking!

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
I always enjoy reading reading "Prepper" lists, ideas, articles, etc.,

I skimmed through this post, and more than anything I can sense the state of uncertainty that we feel, because our world is a rather unstable place; but maybe it has always been this way. But with the incredible advancements in technology over the past 50 years, it's just crazy now!

So, here are a few SHTF ideas for those of you who give a damn.

And by-the-way, to the person who wrote the well written post about these being Biblical times and the power is not going out because the anti-christ needs electricity to power the technology to enable the surveillance/enforcement state; and Christians will be hunted...EXACTLY. Well said.

And for those of you who spent way too much time talking about drinking your own piss {tasty} sure...drink your piss, but it's best to drink it while it's warm.

My SHTF Tip for Today....you can thank me later!

1. BINOCULARS -- Get a good used pair of binoculars in 7x50. These will function as the poor man's NIGHT VISION. You'll be amazed at how well you can see into the dark with binoculars. But they need to have a big objective (in this case 50) and medium magnification (in this case 8). The objective lets light in. The magnification will brighten the view. Too much magnification and the image will be shakey, and it will be more difficult to scan an area. And 8x50 is, and has been, very popular for many years. You can find them on that giant internet auction site for less than $20. Use the search term Vintage.

Also, see if you can find a Nikon, but actually any Vintage binoculars made in Japan will most likely be very good. Vintage basically means the 60's, 70's and 80's.

Do you really need binoculars?

Do you like things that go bump in the night?

Did you like going into your Dark Basement as a child, alone...at night?

Do you think criminals (aka BANDITS) prefer to hunt in daylight or night?

Do you really want to spend a minimum of $250 for very basic Generation 1 night vision, but good night vision will cost over $500 and the excellent stuff starts at $1500.

Do you at least have a powerful flashlight with fresh batteries? (Get a Maglite...there's a reason Cops carry them!)

Do you like to look at the stars? 8x50 will light the Milky Way up for you. Very therapeutic for the Soul. {P.S. I don't care if you think we live under a dome.}

Finally, in daylight, the 8x50 is excellent for scanning the the visual boundaries just beyond the naked eye. They are more forgiving to use from a moving vehicle (such as a car, boat, train).

So...You're going to get binoculars. Good. Don't forget to also order a solid, used, baseball bat (even if you have a Colt 45) because...a good game of baseball is America's favorite past time...why else?

-Peace!

Thank you, ThirstyMarlin, for your post. Binoculars are a good plan, as is a baseball bat. Baseball is said to be America's game, so we really should support.

You are quite right about Godblessya's post - it was excellent. I'm surprised you didn't notice her name on it.

Apparently you've been around for some time and gone through a lot of prepping threads, and feel you are in a teaching position now. Is this correct?

We don't, as a rule, ask each other "Will you appreciate if I give you tips?" We appreciate each other in teaching and in learning, and we leave all the information in this thread for anyone who needs the help or wishes to learn. This thread will be available as long as GLP lasts, which could be longer than some of us. We don't do it for appreciation, not at all. In fact, I find that idea ludicrous, personally. I spend many hours working on this thread, and it would never have dawned on me that someone should appreciate me or my work! LOL We do it because we wish to, because it is the morally correct thing to do, and because we each have different skill sets and information sets to share, for ourselves, for one other, for others who may need the information in the future.

If you choose to join us to learn and to share, that's great! We have a great deal to teach that "skimming" the thread will not particularly mine.

There is a sense of urgency because of the conditions of the world, making it clear we are reaching the "End Times". Currently there are very serious events taking place in the world, some of which are unprecedented. We have Israel, Iran, Turkey, Venezuela, Pakistan and India, Russia and China, - so many things erupting. We feel we need to be prepared at this time, and are encouraging each other in this urgent pursuit.

Are you prepared for whatever scenario you envision? What are your concerns? What scenario do you envision, if you are a prepper? How close to ready are you? Will you be sheltering in or have you a place to go? How will you arrive there?

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
By the way, ThirstyMarlin, you said "for those of you that give a damn" - what a peculiar thing to say to posters in a prepping thread. "For those of you who give a damn" is insulting and an absurdity to write to people who have been here for weeks, obviously very concerned about the subject and interested in the thread.

You may wish to share with us what you meant by that phrase.

Smoking and drinking a lot? To whom is this addressed?

To anyone who smokes and drinks.

Thank you, AC. I cannot imagine anybody here plans to carry liquor and cartons of cigarets in their BOB, but you have given wise advice in case they do.
