Pooka, you could reinforce that position by taking some plywood and gluing scraps of leather to it & setting it against the wall in the back of your closet.

It would help slow down/stop bullets and would take up no space at all.

Surplus stores sell scraps of leather for pennies a pound. Overlap the pieces.

Just make sure you are standing infront of it while on the other side of the wall.
