Cell towers have electronic equipment that could be damaged, and also require power which may not be available after such an event.

You also have to have power to the computers at the phone company.
When somebody dials my number...those computers route the call to my phone & my phone rings.
If those computers are down...calls ain't gonna be connected.

I believe it would take some sort of relay, so we would have to have geographic designators and a schedule of relays. I know this is do-able. We just need people here with the right expertise. I wish this to happen for multiple reasons. Let's just start with the ability to encourage each other. That alone is crucial. There are more reasons.
