Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
This is why I say I am looking at communications in VZ - I choose hope that we may sometimes be able to make phone calls.

----------

Communication is overrated.

What would the people in venezuella have to say to eachother right now?

How's it going mike?

Well jim...I'm starving to death and fighting for my life against rampaging marauders.

Yeah, pretty much the same here...plus no water...welp, it's been good talkin' to ya man.
 Quoting: Mental Case

Are you and mom alive? Did mom get her medication? Is the baby okay? Do you need to come stay with us? Do you need water or did you find some?

Calling relatives or friends in other countries to report they are still alive and safe, still alive but shooting is getting closer, Mom died because she couldn't get her medication. The hospital has the baby but they don't have any IV fluids or medication.

Yes, they have a lot to say! And so would we, to each other, if somebody will set up communications for us.

Rayelle said Speaking of men, if you like to cook, you can snag one. A big one. With a beard, even.
I'm serious. They like to eat and sit and watch movies.
Trust me on this, if you are honest and upfront about who you are and accept them for who THEY are and all THEIR handicaps, mental problems, baggage, surgery scars, lack of hair, teeth or whatever... you ARE what you call, a "desirable partner".
I mean, what guy over 55 or 60 doesn't have some kind of health problem? And what man doesn't like dogs??
It's all a matter of just being friends anyway.

I gotta go cook. I'll be on later.
R.

I didn't quite say it last night, but I am not able to cook most of the time. That's the one thing I could have offered, cuz I am a great country cook - homemade bread all the time, and pies and cakes and roasts and all kinds of good foods - but that time is passed. Anyway, all is well. No worries!

I wouldn't do well with someone with mental problems, and cannot abide stupid, so there are a couple of my biggest caveats.

What I really think about having a man in my life again is that if God intends me to have one, He will deliver. I won't go looking. It would take a very special man, and only God would know the right one.

The casters, however, I would trust myself to choose. Probably better find the cast-iron type, donchathink? In case of weight, of course.

Glad to know you found a way out of depression, for the most part. Hope the sadness continues to abate.

Do you garden? What do you enjoy at home besides peace and the dogs?

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
This is why we have to have cash at home and not plan on a bank or ATM.

-----------

I have no argument with cash...but don't rely on it too much.

If the stores are closed, your cash wont do you any good.

So have cash...but have preps as well. (and remember where the vending machines are...I might have left 1 box of boston baked beans in it).
 Quoting: Mental Case

The point for the cash is gas, if a person became so lucky, and for anything a person might be willing to sell that we need - not everybody is going to think cash will be permanently useless - greed is rampant! Somebody might be willing to sell something terrific for five or ten dollars, and we know we have limited use for the cash, so we would be most fortunate there!

Change for vending machines, and small bills - vending machine change for bills will run out early and change will be required. Nice to have it on hand.

You can keep the baked beans, thanks, but I'd love to find a Uno bar!

RiffRaff, just want to tell you that you are such a blessing!! Your skill sets are somewhat different from the rest of us, in subjects we really need! Each of us is bringing a different skill set, of course, and most of us have a different mindset as well.

Thank you greatly for what you bring to the table, and the rest of you, as well. God bless each of you!

Just for you Giraffe kiss

Aw, thanks Pooka. That's what keeps me coming back here. Despite the asinine behavior of ACs, this community has a lot of people who generally care for others, regardless of theopolitical differences. And I learn as much as I contribute, because as you said, everyone has a different skill to bring to the table.

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
When it comes to an EMP or carrington event or even a faraday cage...nobody can say for certain.

It's all in theory.

I just try to prep for no electricity at all, and that way any electricity will be a blessing.
 Quoting: Mental Case

It is all theory, but I did a lot of research on this subject for an article I wrote for DWS. There was some testing performed on vehicles back in the 80s. The studies found that a majority of vehicles, while sustaining some damage to electronics such as radio or dash instrumentation, would still be capable of starting and being driven normally.

As for other electronics, if they are powered down and not plugged into a power outlet at the time of the event, they may survive the pulse. Any device that is plugged into a household outlet will almost certainly be destroyed.

The most important thing to understand is how a nuclear EMP is broken down into three components - E1, E2, and E3 - and how each component can affect various electronics.

Only a nuclear detonation will produce all three components. The E2 component is very similar in effect as a bolt of lightning hitting your house, and the effects of a massive coronal mass ejection such as the Carrington Event are very similar to the E3 component.

So, my recommendations are as follows:
1: Store a netbook computer or tablet and other small, sensitive electronics in a shielded safe, preferable in a basement or underground shelter area. They should survive all components of an EMP. For instance, in our safe we have a small netbook computer loaded with survival documentation, a GPS unit (which probably won't function if the satellites are knocked out), two "burner" cell phones (which probably won't function if the cellular networks are destroyed), and two shortwave radios for communications.

2: If a nuclear crisis reaches DEFCON 2 level or higher, unplug as many electronics from their outlets in your house as possible. They may survive; they may not, but it's worth the attempt.

3: Don't assume that once an EMP weapon has gone off at high altitude that it's now safe to bring out all of your electronics. Wait until the nuclear exchange has completely halted.

4: Don't just assume your car won't start after an EMP hit. Try to start it and see what happens. Some research indicated that disconnecting the battery from a damaged vehicle for a few minutes then reconnecting it may allow the vehicle to start.

As Mental Case said, prepare as if there is going to be no electricity at all, that way if any electronics survive it's gravy on top of what you're prepared for.
 Quoting: Riff-Raff

I am surprised to think a vehicle might start after an EMP, other than one close to fifty years old. Had to sell mine because I couldn't get in and out any more - too high.
 Quoting: Pooka

The odds are actually pretty good. It has to do with the wavelength of the E3 component and lack of anything on a vehicle to conduct energy on that wavelength. Think of it as having an antenna tuned for AM and FM frequencies, but E3 is ELF frequency. So your car doesn't pick up on it.

Don't know anything about burner phones - why did you do that? What do you expect from them? Is it because you have to keep your usual cellphone with you, that would be fried, so just to have any kind of cellphone? What do they cost, and how do they work? I mean - mine is connected through the business online I purchased it from and who supply my connectivity. YOu can tell I barely know how to useit, much less talk about it! LOL I only got it because where I lived until recently was 35 miles from town where all shopping is done, and it's a long, lonely highway, steep ditches on each side of much of it, and tide flats or salt water on either side, depending on tide in or out. Bought it for emergencies and that's all I use it for.

So, you take the burner phones out of the safe and we'll assume power and celltowers suddenly working again. How do you use the phone? It doesn't have your phone number, and isn't connected to whomever supplied your connectivity on your usual phone. Maybe everybody here knows these answers, but I'm betting some are as ignorant as I am.

Thank you very much for all your help in these matters!
 Quoting: Pooka

These phones are prepaid with their own unique numbers and time already on them. The numbers aren't associated with us. Hell, we don't even know what they are because we haven't activated the phones yet. We purchased them from a Meijer clearance rack for $10 each.

And there are two purposes in mind with them. Yes, you are correct that our everyday phones may or may not survive a nuclear EMP, but the burner phones would. If cell coverage gets running again, we might have working phones. But they are also for us to use if the government gets out of control. These phones cannot be traced to us, so we can communicate if we have to. The only information these phones can give away is our location, and we have contingency plans for that I won't specify here.

RiffRaff, with your spectacular ideas and plans - we don't even want to know your contingency location plans, really we don't - could you set up our core group with a means of communication after TSHTF? I didn't know these things about burner phones and they might be a good idea, supposing some things are workable some places some times.

I was more thinking CB radio - is that in your wheelhouse? Most of us wouldn't be interested in now investing in MARS purchase, licensing and study. Of course whoever sets up our system may well use MARS as part of it - for example when there is too great a distance between certain members, relay could go through a well-located MARS radio, then back to our system.

There will be people looking to get your food.

Some may try violence.
Some may try brow beating you (guilt tripping).
Some may try trade.
Some may try to con you (rip you off).
Some may try to talk your fool head off.

Most will look you in the eye & tell you they DESERVE to live more than you do (while taking your stuff)!

It's gonna be tough!

You are going to HAVE TO learn how to say "NO"! (and back it up if necessary).

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
Sadly, greed will not be in short supply even after TSHTF or even TEOTWAKI. Probably be on the increase, even. That's to our great advantage if we are prepared.

-----------

Now here is a whole new avenue of prep we haven't gotten into.

This post is perfect! We need to be running through each scenario and every variation thereof, right here in the thread, to figure out what we will do, to practice in our heads what we will do, so that nothing surprises us - we are prepared to handle each attempt to take what we worked very, very hard to accumulate and desperately need for our own survival.

We need to be talking about our individual triggers, as well. What is most likely to work to get your stuff?

If somebody tried to convince me they deserve to live more than me, part of me would be thinking "probably so, as you are very healthy. On the other hand, not a chance, because you have no morals or decency!"

Start us a scenario, Mental Case, please. Let's see what each would do.

Nope. I wouldn't quite use either of those for paving stones, but I would push them out of the bed if handed a Uno.

CLEARLY I need to research the subject much further! :D

When you have found and devoured a Uno, I would be willing to accept all the preps and money and dogs you are so anxious to send my way as a thank you for the best tastebud experience of your life!

Your beloved neice or nephew knocks on your door...

Lets just top right there...do you let them in?

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
OK, I'll give a hint as to what I would do.

I would make an exscuse (my front door is nailed shut) and I would go outside to talk with them.

I know many will disagree with me...but I can't ignore family.

If they had no place to go...homeless...I would let them in...but we all know that opens up a NASTY can of worms!!!

If they were trying to browbeat me out of my preps...no way in hell are they comming in! (I may give them something...but they are NOT comming inside).

If I let them inside, they might go straight for my preps...then it would become physical violence.

I would rather avoid that (by not letting them in, in the first place).
