Whispering Leaves, wherever you are - adjunct to our earlier conversation, I am reading about a man's survival experiences and plans in Arizona, and happened onto this paragraph:

Merino wool Underwear, kept in a small dry bag fits at the bottom of your bag in cooler temps, and is a life saver when you need it. It insulates when wet, doesn’t itch and is one piece of gear you cannot afford to be without. Poly pro is an acceptable substitute but I know wool is a better bet for my own life.

How interesting, eh?
 Quoting: Pooka

Very interesting.
I had to come back on my tablet. Laptop went nuts. Keyboard types by itself, windows scroll and can't relieve it even plugging in another keyboard, sigh..it's like a scene from The Sorcerer's Apprentice. We had one of those combo storms, like the Postal Service slogan: rain, snow, hail and dark of night too and I have leaks so maybe a drop of water got on it and....fried it?

Now I'm online trying to learn how to take the thing apart right, all by myself, sniff sniff. It's the trade-off of being 200 miles from anybody who could tell me anything. Microsux site chat told me to take the motherboard out and I 'can still use the device, just not the touchpad.' Do you think the guy was just making fun of me?

Who's the guy in Arizona?

My keyboard is messed up as well, I spilled something in it. It got down into the motherboard as well (no, it won't work without the motherboard).

Here is something you can try. Unplug it and remove the battery. Hold the power button down for about 15 seconds. Openit up and stand it on it's side and let it sit that way for a day or two. You want to drain any moisture out.

I got back almost full functionality after doing this. The Z, X, and spacebar are still a bit persnickety.

I'll probably have to replace the keyboard. After 17 years as a computer/IT guy, I hate working on laptops. My eyes are getting so bad those tiny screws can be hard to see.

Definitely a concern here in CA. They keep expanding the list of who can file such papers. It basically boils down to anyone who doesn't like you.

AC 77501891 about? Just ran across something I'd like your opinion on, at your convenience.

It is an open secret inside the ham radio community the VOICE communications used by ARES/RACES will be disinformation, while the information sent out over digital will be truthful.

Read that as anything you scan ( in time of emergency ) from your County/State Emergency Services will be false.

If You want to know what is really happening around you, YOU need digital capabilities in both your VHF and HF radio setups.

Further - just tried to read this page and shook my head - interpretation of only as much of this as I need to know, please? [link to quietsurvivalist.com]
 Quoting: Pooka

There might be a different culture between analog and digital modes in ham radio, I haven't been able to discern that yet. It may not be a coincidence that I prefer digital but the majority have an analog preference. I am the link between two states via packet radio if that becomes the option of choice.

As far as your link, I understand your confusion. Understanding comes from actually doing. Local repeaters are the easiest to get started with, NVIS is a great strategy to cover reasonable distances without depending on atmospheric conditions but the really long hauls require certain circumstances. It all depends on your antenna. Many people focus on the radio but at the end of the day it is the antenna that determines whether a signal breaks out of the signal floor. In other words, it is less important what radio you have, it is more important what kind of antenna is hooked to it.

A 'rubber duck' kind of antenna is perfectly adequate for local connections but you should build one too for the experience.

Thank you so much for the response!

Baofengs arrived today - WHOOPEEEE - but cord to use computer to do whatever it is has not yet arrived, nor has the longer antenna.

I've read bits and pieces about basically running a wire up the outside corner of the house, fastened with wood, for a taller antenna. Could it be as simple as that? Must the other end of the wire come inside and be attached to the radio?

Starting to wonder if my concentration is up to all this. Starting on night oxygen shortly which should be helpful. It all sounds a lot of work. Wish you were next door!

Thank you again.

Regarding the license, we debated about that, if you recall, because I would not be into confiscation - would rather learn it all but not take the test, in order to avoid confiscation just at the very time I purchased this radio for! I want and need to know what is going on in agencies and on the street after TSHTF, not to have worked hard to be ready for that only to lose the ability just when it's crucial.

May I ask why you want a keyboard from China? I know next to nothing about specialty keyboards so I can only approach the question from a linguistic standpoint, which is more or less a 'specialty' of mine since I write in several languages: do you need an extended Chinese keyboard to write Chinese? I can see why, if that's what you do, you'd need one unless you want to take all day to write anything.

A friend gave me this laptop and I have to fix it no matter what, so I'm not unintentionally rubbing it in too much that he should have listened to my warnings at the start:) Computers are not an interest of his; he just buys himself a new one when he starts having problems with his own laptop. He got ripped off on Amazon with a 3rd party seller, sold as 'new' and was refurbished, been in the shop many times. No warranty or bennies left. (running the serial number on the manufacturer's site told me that much.)

It's an HP, low-end line Pavilion, maybe sold for 250. when it was new. I know Friend spent way above that, he told me so. You know what Amazon is like when you don't know your way around. It gets better: seller was in Miami, Fla. with a Spanish name, and I just bet that was no Spaniard. It does not have a separate battery compartment so I have to take off the whole back to even find it. I may have to reseat the ribbon cable, somehow. I'm having trouble with my eyes, too.

Still, this is a kind of prepping that seems plain common sense. As long as I have a way to run these machines, I have to understand them and know how to fix them. Tech 'help is not on the way.'

WL, I think most of us order our techie stuff from China - you-all correct me if I'm wrong. My Baofeng radios came from there, because that's where they are made. Extended antenna and cord for programming coming from same geography.

China makes the least expensive and generally most efficient electronic "stuff" - your lappy was probably made there, despite being HP. Could be wrong.

As to you fixing your own, you are so very right - "Help is NOT on the way" nor will it be for almost anything we need. We gotta do stuff we may not wish or know how to do. Thank God for online instructions and printers!! Best wishes with yours! Hope Crunch's drainage tip helps you!

I say this because when I first brought up purchasing a HAM handheld, you or someone mentioned it could disappear with the EO covering such things.

Is there a greater reason to be licensed than not to be? I would want to help in any way I could, if that became an option. I generally grasp things a bit faster than the average, so if concentration cooperates, as soon as I grasp theory the details will become instantly clear.

I lean upon you greatly for advice due to your wisdom and experience in this subject, for which I am most grateful.

Is there something with the radios I should be learning while waiting for the cord to program them?

Would you expect the EO enforcers to be checking places such as here and other forae, and popular online sales sites, for ownership of such things? As it happens, the night I decided to buy, I clicked a set of two of everything, rather than one. If above does not obtain, I might lose or give away one set - losing it could so easily happen! Except in case of "close inspection" of course.

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
There so many things that can totally disrupt your way of life. You can't be ready for all of them. You can be a bit more ready if you remain flexible. I read this thread and see so many of you trying to prep your way to having a life as we know it now. There is a very small chance of that happening.

Think of those people fleeing the turmoil in places like Venezuela, the middle east, etc. What if that happened in your area? I would say that most of those people are just common folk. They were out of options.

Another point I want to make, with tensions running high and everyone being offended it only needs a spark to become something like the Ferguson riots. What if rioting were nationwide? What if you are bugging in in a city that is on fire?

Let's say you are prepped for most scenarios. Word of a biological hazard is coming. Or there is a major environtal hazard? I guess the point I am trying to make is that you need to have prepped in the knowledge department. Know how to survive with your own two hands.

If something sent the world back to the stoneage, how long do you think your prep items will last? Knives and guns wear out. I am not saying it would be a useless endeavor to prep. I am not saying to give up on having a few weeks worth of food on hand.

There is no way of knowing from which direction the trouble will come. Be flexible. Adapt. Have an awareness of what is going on around you so you have an option ready to step up and be implemented when called for. If your gut tells you to do something, don't hesitate. You can't hear your gut in a state of shock or panic.

Always very glad to have new information here and new ideas to examine.

I was just pointing out that that explosion could have knocked out power. Could it have been a terrorist? I just look at things with open eyes. Remember Ft. Lauderdale?

Looking inward, what you have written here is exactly right, and should be the tent over the top of any preparations made by any person.

We definitely DO NOT KNOW what is coming, what we will be forced to deal with. I think most of us here have accepted the future could bring any one or more of all the things we consider, and also things we could not have imagined.

I don't think we, or at least I, expect life to go on the way it is - that's what I would like - to stay here, to make use of what I have prepared with, and be able to continue this way until something else opens up.

My trust is in God. Even today, I ask Him what preparations to make, what to purchase, what He would have me do. It is my belief that if I live through the first of what is to come, I will be shown the next step, and I don't believe it will be here at home. I have things to offer a group - knowledge more than food or other commodities. I know how to garden, to sew, to do a number of things, which would make me desirable in a community, as long as they understood my physical limitations. I can do the sewing, but would have to direct the gardening, for example.

I don't expect life to continue as it is, and I am glad you brought this up. If anyone here does, I am unaware. However, I do know that all who have written on the subject are considering every possible event that we know of. I don't believe anyone, for example, expects power to continue arriving at our outlets, nor water to come through our pipes. We, or at least I, don't even expect my plumbing to take away what it should, for any length of time.

No, life will change completely, and so will priorities. Survival will be effortful, and everything we have done today toward that eventuality will be of great help.

For example, I have a plan that if I cannot stay here, I will go to an area in the woods, far away from any city, and take with me what I can, including the little butane stove for cooking and whatever butane I have at the time, using it the least possible as I look for items with which to build a rocket stove. That's just an example, but perhaps it carries the flavor to you of knowing it will be hard, but having ways to make the adjustments a little easier.

I'm really glad you posted this, LI! Bless you for it! If you have any questions I could perhaps answer, please ask!

How are you prepared? That is, what do you anticipate, and in what manner are you prepared for it? Going to shelter in place, or do you have a community to join, or how do you expect to handle this?

I am alone, and that's a very bad position, especially for a woman, yet I can rely on God to manage things His way, which is always the best since He is the only one who knows the future. Perhaps there is someone out there who will want to join me for mutual support. I just trust God and keep putting one foot in front of the other, preparing as best I can, listening to the advice of others in case they have wisdom I need, and sharing everything I know in case it will help someone else.

Thank you again, LI, and hugs for you!

edit: I just reread your post, and want to add that GLP is where I came for news, in the beginning, about six years ago. Since that time I found that the news is always here first, even before MSM. I no longer bother with MSM except the occasional article which might be linked somewhere.

I do sometimes worry about a few of the people here who don't seem to pay very much attention to what is going on. Some seem to think we have time - time to do whatever, take care of things in the future, buy something in a few months. I personally don't think we have that kind of time, or if we do, we cannot count on it.

I watch the news here very carefully, and dig into it. A whisper in a little thread tomorrow morning might contain the largest and worst news we could have - and it is necessary to be aware of this. We have troubles coming from so many directions.

For example I just watched a video which was linked in another thread, and among other things the man said, very quietly, that he knows two border patrol agents very well and they told him there are live rounds being fired, and things are going bad. ON OUR NORTHERN BORDER!!! I have tried to warn people not to just look south, but to be aware our northern border is completely porous, and Canada has let in all manner of people, perhaps more than we have, I think. Lots and lots of Chinese, too. Now I learn there is trouble and gunfire there - I live only a few hours from that border. Having been aware, and having warned about it, now we see a beginning of trouble there.

Another thing - the discussion of ebola, something I know a little about from the last time it sprung up. So I follow the ebola threads, and post on them, too. I"ve also begun following the "vaccination" threads. There was a link from one on ebola earlier today that I read just a little while ago, and if it had been a book, I would have dropped it in shock. Posted the information on the vaccination thread because it fit. The Gates foundation has invested in the company making an ebola vaccination. This company is MONSANTO - the same that made the Zyklon B gas for the Holocaust, that has made Round-UP and GMO that are killing us through our foods. Now THEY are going to make an ebola vaccine.

Just thinking from A to B to C - ebola threatens the southern border. A company which makes products to kill or at least shorten lives is making the vaccine. We can be forced to accept this vaccine, likely through martial law. What's in it? Probably nothing to do with ebola, but God only knows what it will do.

What will martial law do? Change our lives completely. Confiscate our weapons, our foods and water and anything else they choose. There are EOs allowing this.

We do need to watch the news, and be able to put things together for ourselves. Yes, we surely do.

There

Why is Candida auris a problem?

It causes serious infections. C. auris can cause bloodstream infections and even death, particularly in hospital and nursing home patients with serious medical problems. More than 1 in 3 patients with invasive C. auris infection (for example, an infection that affects the blood, heart, or brain) die.
It’s often resistant to medicines. Antifungal medicines commonly used to treat Candida infections often don’t work for Candida auris. Some C. auris infections have been resistant to all three types of antifungal medicines.
It’s becoming more common. Although C. auris was just discovered in 2009, it has spread quickly and caused infections in more than a dozen countries.
It’s difficult to identify. C. auris can be misidentified as other types of fungi unless specialized laboratory technology is used. This misidentification might lead to a patient getting the wrong treatment.
It can spread in hospitals and nursing homes. C. auris has caused outbreaks in healthcare facilities and can spread through contact with affected patients and contaminated surfaces or equipment. Good hand hygiene and cleaning in healthcare facilities is important because C. auris can live on surfaces for several weeks.
