A balance between those who are moving on and those who would better move in. Some welfare mother who has eleven children and no means to support them? Maybe one of them, given the proper support, becomes your next tactical leader against a threat that you never saw coming. Or they could just eat. This is the conundrum that keeps me awake. |

This then is an entirely different scenario. I would not know the difference in the makes of cars LOL but I know a lot by looking at a person. A farrier whose face has not been touched by sun and whose hands are white and smooth - get on down the road. Someone who presents as an electrician and has work-worn hands with many small nick scars and lined from pulling lines - c'mon in. A claim of herbal medicine with lily-white hands and face - not happening. Takes sun and years and toil to dig out roots and find natural medicines. That's how I would go, I hope. In your scene, which do you choose - Dodge and blacksmit or Lexus and forager? Not solely because of what they might benefit the community with but because whoever choose that vehicle understood the value of picking something that would be serviceable beyond Doomsday. And they chose to put whoever is in that vehicle. So I have to consider whether to turn away anyone in this situation or to extend a welcome. It's a tricky thing to consider. I, to my shame, would encourage most people to keep moving. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77501891 It's a tricky thing to consider. I, to my shame, would encourage most people to keep moving. I didn't want to say so earlier, but I would lean to toward the truck because it is capable of work and the owner must have thought that way in order to purchase it. The Lexus probably doesn't know anything about work except behind a desk. Unless, of course, it's his wife's car, but that still doesn't tell us what he drives. You cannot be terribly ashamed, because I'm worse - I'm for NO OPENING DOORS no matter what they might be able to do. I have very little in the way of preps - not enough to share, and I have two dogs I don't want anyone EVEN thinking that way about. If I had an acre or more, I would look more toward letting in a person or two, with families if necessary, in order to help grow food. Since I don't, my only need here is additional protection/guarding/sentries, which would be hard to pick out, and harder to feed. It's all a hard question, to be revealed only when faced with it, but running this scenario i s extremely helpful and I am so very glad you did. Wish more and more would be brought up in this thread, for us to be considering. It wasn't facing earth, thank goodness. But it certainly makes you aware of just how precarious life on earth truly is. Solar cycle 24 has been unusually low in activity. Typically the cycle following a low one is much higher than normal. Why is this important? The suns activity powers our magnetic field. The field is very weak right now. A blast from a sunspot at such a low state would allow UVC rays to reach the ground. Not to mention the effects on the grid. UVC rays can alter DNA aka cause cancer. Quoting: LookingInward Eh hem. The first decision they had to make was jump to light speed to avoid being killed or stay with all the ships that didn't have a "light speed drive". Had they stayed, all would have died...so they did a light speed jump and everybody on every ship that couldn't make the jump were destroyed. The situation was what it was...they made the right call.
