Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
The hope of one person in these days is that they can have a positive effect on another's decisions. It's no longer a matter of how much you've gathered to provide against the coming malestrom, for most people it is what they can carry when they flee from the disaster.

A Lexus pulls up, asks for food. A Dodge pulls up, wanting the same. You run the calculus about sending supplies to either one. Your own local group pays the price but only for one day as opposed to, what, a week?

And maybe the Dodge is carrying someone who knows how to blacksmith and the Lexus has someone who know how forage for medicine? What is your price for admission? Which do you decide is a viable addition?

Well, that's the conundrum that I am trying to resolve, though there isn't really a resolution. A balance between those who are moving on and those who would better move in. Some welfare mother who has eleven children and no means to support them? Maybe one of them, given the proper support, becomes your next tactical leader against a threat that you never saw coming. Or they could just eat. This is the conundrum that keeps me awake.

This, thank God, is after the worst of the worst has passed, when the thugs and marauders and killers and torturers have mainly weeded themselves out. This then is an entirely different scenario.

I would not know the difference in the makes of cars LOL but I know a lot by looking at a person. A farrier whose face has not been touched by sun and whose hands are white and smooth - get on down the road. Someone who presents as an electrician and has work-worn hands with many small nick scars and lined from pulling lines - c'mon in.

A claim of herbal medicine with lily-white hands and face - not happening. Takes sun and years and toil to dig out roots and find natural medicines.

That's how I would go, I hope. In your scene, which do you choose - Dodge and blacksmit or Lexus and forager?

Right now, the Dodge gets my vote. Not solely because of what they might benefit the community with but because whoever choose that vehicle understood the value of picking something that would be serviceable beyond Doomsday. And they chose to put whoever is in that vehicle. So I have to consider whether to turn away anyone in this situation or to extend a welcome.

It's a tricky thing to consider. I, to my shame, would encourage most people to keep moving.

I didn't want to say so earlier, but I would lean to toward the truck because it is capable of work and the owner must have thought that way in order to purchase it. The Lexus probably doesn't know anything about work except behind a desk. Unless, of course, it's his wife's car, but that still doesn't tell us what he drives.

You cannot be terribly ashamed, because I'm worse - I'm for NO OPENING DOORS no matter what they might be able to do. I have very little in the way of preps - not enough to share, and I have two dogs I don't want anyone EVEN thinking that way about.

If I had an acre or more, I would look more toward letting in a person or two, with families if necessary, in order to help grow food. Since I don't, my only need here is additional protection/guarding/sentries, which would be hard to pick out, and harder to feed. It's all a hard question, to be revealed only when faced with it, but running this scenario i s extremely helpful and I am so very glad you did. Wish more and more would be brought up in this thread, for us to be considering.

------------

I get where you're coming from...but I wouldn't lose sleep over it now.

We all make decisions...some will be right and some will be wrong. The trick is learning how to live with the decisions you have made, but that will be in the rear view mirror.

Until then, everybody will do the best they can with what they have.

As far as mistakes...I've made some doozies...and I'm sure I'll make more in the future. The best I can do is try to learn from them & not make the same mistake twice.

Very true, yet a mistake in "those" days could be fatal - that's my concern. Yeah, this guy looks right, sounds right, presents right, I'll let him in and feed him in exchange for protection. OOps!!! Turns out he killed me and my dogs - them for food and me so he could take everything else.

--------

In the remake of "Battlestar Galactica" their entire worlds population was down to less than 50,000 survivers.

Every time they made the morally correct decision, they lost another 5,000 people. Every time they made the selfish decision few to none died.

It was pretty intense.

If possible, I would suggest the leader form a "cabinet of advisors".

In order to make the tough decisions, you take in all available info, get the opinions of your cabinet, then make your best judgement call.

It would help the leaders moral after a decision leads to failure/disaster.

This is an excellent plan, for the reason you give as well as because more minds are better than one - a discussion with each contributing could lead to the best possible decision. OF course even the group think could blow it, but I would more trust this than if any of us had to make the decisions alone.

Some of you may not be aware, just a couple years ago there was a CME that would have annihilated our electrical system worldwide. It wasn't facing earth, thank goodness. But it certainly makes you aware of just how precarious life on earth truly is. Solar cycle 24 has been unusually low in activity. Typically the cycle following a low one is much higher than normal. Why is this important? The suns activity powers our magnetic field. The field is very weak right now. A blast from a sunspot at such a low state would allow UVC rays to reach the ground. Not to mention the effects on the grid. UVC rays can alter DNA aka cause cancer.

No, not really.

The first decision they had to make was jump to light speed to avoid being killed or stay with all the ships that didn't have a "light speed drive".

Had they stayed, all would have died...so they did a light speed jump and everybody on every ship that couldn't make the jump were destroyed.

The situation was what it was...they made the right call. Although they had to leave people behind to be killed.

I researched this a long time ago and even was subscribed to the youtuber's who covered it and went to solarham all the time. I still never understand all of it but I got the idea of what was going on.

I always felt that an EMP would be the death blow for a the world.

After a long while, I figured there would be nothing I could do about it at all.

I have one similar, even older, but a 3-burner. The fuel tank rusted out, so I bought a $7 propane converter. It runs on the green 1 lb. tanks, and I have a hose to connect it to a larger tank (BBQ tank).

Works great.
I've been married so long, I don't even look both ways when I cross the street.
