Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
Disaster Mythology and Fact: Hurricane Katrina and Social Attachment

In this article, we reconsider these myths and facts in relation to Hurricane Katrina, with particular emphasis on psychosocial needs and behaviors, based on data gleaned from scientific sources as well as printed and electronic media reports. The review suggests that preparedness plans for disasters involving forced mass evacuation and resettlement should place a high priority on keeping families together—and even entire neighborhoods, where possible—so as to preserve the familiar and thereby minimize the adverse effects of separation and major dislocation on mental and physical health.

THE “MYTHS”

The 10 myths and facts on disasters are as follows:

Myth #1: Foreign medical volunteers with any kind of clinical background are needed. Fact: The local population almost always provides for its own immediate health needs. Only medical personnel with skills that are not available in the affected country may be needed.

Myth #2: Any kind of international assistance is needed immediately. Fact: A hasty response, not based on an impartial evaluation, contributes to the chaos. Most needs are met by the victims themselves and their government and local agencies, not by foreign aid workers.

Myth #3: Epidemics and plagues are inevitable after every disaster. Fact: Epidemics seldom occur after a disaster, and dead bodies do not lead to catastrophic outbreaks of infectious diseases. Improving sanitary conditions and educating the public on hygienic measures are the best means of preventing disease.

Myth #4: Disasters bring out the worst in people (e.g., looting, rioting). Fact: While there are isolated cases of antisocial behavior, which tend to be highlighted by the media, most people respond positively and generously.

Myth #5: The affected population is too shocked and helpless to take responsibility for its own survival. Fact: Many people find new strength and resiliency during an emergency.

Myth #6: Disasters are random killers. Fact: Disasters strike the most vulnerable groups hardest, i.e., minorities and the poor, especially women, children, and the elderly.

Myth #7: Locating disaster victims in temporary settlements is the best solution to the housing problem. Fact: This is the least desirable option. The preferred strategy is to purchase construction materials and rebuild.

Myth #8: Food aid is always required for the victims of natural disasters. Fact: Massive food aid is not usually required; natural disasters only rarely cause loss of crops.

Myth #9: Clothing is always needed by disaster victims. Fact: Clothing is almost never needed; it is usually culturally inappropriate, and although it is accepted by disaster victims it is almost never worn.

Myth #10: Things return to normal within a few weeks. Fact: Disasters have enduring effects and major economic consequences. International interest tends to wane just as needs and shortages become more pressing.

Much less than 30%

I disagree with several of these "myths" but perhaps you will agree. Let's talk about it - it's a good article, long and explanatory.

Back is better. I'll be crashing soon. Heading to walmart at 5:30 AM.
 Quoting: Crunch62

Very glad it's better! Why so early to Walmart?
 Quoting: Pooka

That is the time I prefer to drive to town. The drivers on the rural 2-lanes here are horrendous. All over the road, messing with their phones, etc.

WM opens at 6AM, it takes me about a half hour to get there on the back roads with zero traffic at that time of day.

I could get there in about 10 minutes on the main highway, but I will not drive that road for any reason. 14 people died in a 23-mile section here in 2017.

I take the roads less traveled.

Does anyone burn on their property or have a fire pit anymore?

I am going to have a fire pit I am going start using this year. After I burn a whole bunch of cardboard and get some firewood stored, I will share a picture or video.

My brother burns all the time and I was like hell I have to do this.

 Quoting: Anonymous JD

Yes. I have a burn 'pit' that is made from a section of boiler jacket from the gold rush days here.

Was a stationary steam engine, maybe from a sawmill. We have used it to burn as well as cook. Once did 4 whole chickens and 2 tri-tip on it.

There is a pic of a similar engine out there, lost in photobucket hell. Here's a pic from today with a fire ready to be started.

It has brick in the bottom.

I will add "even one that is out of fluid." Just pick a little bit of lint off your clothes, make a ball, and put it where the flame should be. Try it now. It might come in handy later on. Those pieces of flint last much longer than the fluid.

I've not seen this before and the concept is fascinating! However, I cannot watch something that drags out forever as these videos do. So the basic idea is that copper is required to be touching the threads of the bulbs, a magnet goes in the salt water, and presto? Is that all there is to it?

I love this idea, if it works, and if I never ever have to hear that "music" again or watch cups being adjusted forever! LOL

Really, this is fascinating, LI! Thank you!

If/when power goes out, I would surely try this. That's why I was asking if the basics are salt water, a copper wire touching light bulb threads, and a magnet.

I just bought about 20 heavy ceramic magnets oddly enough. They'll attach t hings to cars, like camouflage covers, mosquito netting, etc. If power was out, I'd love light bulb light, though I'm sure it's lesser in water than in a power socket.

By the way, peeps, my eyes were dilated today and still not quite right, so typos are likely - shoot me. LOL

edit: We've talked a lot about barter goods, and many have different ideas, which is good - variety is the spice, etc.

My determination seems to have come all the way - lighters, coffee, cigarets or tobacco. Anyone and everyone will need lighters because they are not going to be practiced in making sparks with whatever system they bought, and lighters are just easier. Also have some matches to alternate with. Lighters worth more, of course.

People will be nearly ready to kill for a cup of caffeine. I know I would be - the headache alone would be tough. Then there's the cigaret - even if they have been days or weeks without one, those accustomed to smoking will be desperate still. To be able to barter a combination of enough coffee for a cup, plus one cigaret, would gain one a year's supply of shrimp or steak or anything, darned near! LOL Harder to keep cigarets on hand, but then, a few cans or bags of tobacco and a great many cigaret papers - cheaper by far, and those desperate enough will suddenly remember they used to know how to roll marijuana cigarets and can surely manage one of tobacco.

Tea bags I will probably just keep for myself, selfishly. Can't imagine not having tea to sip - and cold is fine - it starts hot but goes along nicely when cooled. Maybe I will share a few, but only with the nicest of people, of course!

Drove across the parking lot to Walmart today from eye appt while dilated - ew. So I couldn't find any butane bottles, but still had to manage checkout and had been standing and walking a long time so I didn't look for long. Of all things I ran into an acquaintance in a cart - not sure why she uses it. She's the weight of an apricot, for pete's sake, and has no walking difficulties that I know of! That might have changed since she is on dialysis now. Told her I don't even try any more to get one because they are always either in use or charging. She said there was a whole pile of them this time. Oh well.

Found the sweetest little plants to go in my hanging baskets - like miniature sunflowers, and trailing. Have not seen those before. Overwintered the fuschias and Creeping Jenny - had a couple other things that I don't think made it. These little yellow sweeties will be adorable. I'll see what they are when I plant them or move them tomorrow. Left them on the front porch in the rain for now.

Still thinking about that power outage thread. If OP made it up, I will remember that person, but still don't see a reason. Shutting down oil wells for more than a day does seem a long step to take, doesn't it?

Crunch, how's your back today after moving all that wood? And how was the zero dark thirty trip to Walmart?

I didn't get there until about four, because my exams take forever - a medication I take for lupus can cause blindness so twice a year my eyes go through the wringer. So far so good!

This must have been either a good day or a good time of the month, because it wasn't bad in there, and it wasn't hard to get a handicapped parking space, either. Usually I like Sunday mornings, or any time before 11 a.m. - an employee gave me that tip.

So tell us how you are doing, please, Crunch - hope your back didn't seize up today.

Then I wonder why the big deal about the wire? Both videos I watched used it, I think, and one used nails, which I didn't get.

I understand that to make a two-minute video probably isn't worthwhile and maybe YT wouldn't even accept that size, but I wish one had been just that brief and to the point, and without that noise in the background.

Do we have to start experimenting? LOL As if we didn't have enough to do, but it would be fun to try.

Earlier I recommended everyone read the thread about the possible power outage. This is a post on that thread from BodiDoc, one of my favorite mods, which reminded me that I read about the CME which wasn't large, but could be involved. LI, was this the one you posted yesterday?

At any rate, have a read, people. We may need action.

We had a B8 Solar flare over the weekend which will
have some CME effects on the planet (not a direct hit
but bad enough) which may have them concerned about
the infrastructure of Wyoming's state. I don't know
if having electricity already traveling through electric
carrier lines when a CME effect happens is WORSE than
if the wires are turned off...I am assuming it would be
far better to have the electricity OFF.

In any event...the power outage is very odd and even
more strange that they are not alerting the public if
they believe electromagnetic energy will be disruptive
in this area--there are other concerns people may have
as well, if this is in fact what is sparking the planned
outage.

I already built a rocket stove with concrete blocks, and a few bricks. It works great. So will the Kelly kettle be my portable cooking option?
I do camp a lot & like to be minimal. Is it worth the cost in the long run? It is rather pricey, but I would not mind if it saves in the long run, cost of charcoal, use of lumber, ect.
