So I want the Kelly kettle, is that a wise decision? It heats water to boil I’m 5 minutes or less and cooks food with twigs, scrap pine & dried leaves.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 69118180

Seems like it would be great, if not too heavy for your plan to carry it, and it is very spendy! I admired it, on my way to the little butane burner.

Haven't heard from anyone here already having one - do you, somebody?
 Quoting: Pooka

Say - is that the one that also makes a light and a cellphone charger? If not, there is one that does both.

I already built a rocket stove with concrete blocks, and a few bricks. It works great. So will the Kelly kettle be my portable cooking option?
I do camp a lot & like to be minimal. Is it worth the cost in the long run? It is rather pricey, but I would not mind if it saves in the long run, cost of charcoal, use of lumber, ect.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 69118180

Check the weight on it to be certain you would want to carry it with whatever else you need to carry at the same time.

COngrats on the rocket stove! Amazing inventions!

Crunch, how's your back today after moving all that wood? And how was the zero dark thirty trip to Walmart?

So tell us how you are doing, please, Crunch - hope your back didn't seize up today.

Doing well. I got some mowing done yesterday and will be weedwacking and spraying today.Gotta keep up on that stuff or it gets overgrown in a hurry.

Walmart trip was fine. 6 AM is the best time to be at WM. Deer, rabbits, skunks and pheasants on the gravel back roads.

I am taking note of where the deer are - and when. Could be useful at some point.

Does anyone burn on their property or have a fire pit anymore?

 Quoting: Anonymous JD

Yes. I have a burn 'pit' that is made from a section of boiler jacket from the gold rush days here.

Was a stationary steam engine, maybe from a sawmill. We have used it to burn as well as cook. Once did 4 whole chickens and 2 tri-tip on it.

There is a pic of a similar engine out there, lost in photobucket hell. Here's a pic from today with a fire ready to be started.

It has brick in the bottom.

Edit update: I bought these because I became lucky and purchased a camouflaged cover for the car, in case a run to the mountains and forest is required and we need to tuck away under the trees for a while. Also thought of putting tarps in place with them. And have a newly-acquired frost covering for windshield - could use the magnets to hold it in place instead of tucking a flap inside each front door.

Truth be told, I just like magnets. Always did, even as a child. Only had one once or twice to play with. Now I am all grown up I can have dessert before dinner, or even instead, if I please, and I can play with magnets. :) :)

These are strong enough that I can lay one on my palm and move it via another under my hand. They will close an inch or more space between them just to be together again.

Wish all marriages were like that, right?

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
I meant transmit, not broadcast - my apologies. New terminology. :)

I would LOVE to be of service, make a contribution, especially if I could do so sitting right here. And if the main receiver and scanner is/are confiscated, doggone that's a shame! Oh, wait - I might have something else tucked away in the back of the closet! I will be looking for used equipment, though I won't know what I am looking at. If the price is right, I'll drag it home, describe it to you, and suddenly discover what I found via your explanation! LOL

Has equipment been confiscated due to abuse and misuse, or something else? Non-licensed I understand.

Radio Free Europe was always a Godsend to listeners who managed a tiny transistor radio and could find one of those little batteries. They never transmitted, but would learn the truth of events in the world. Great groups of people would gather, as many as could feel safe sneaking along in the night or gathering in the back of a marketplace, and try to hear this tiny radio whispering truth to them. Learning of that might have been the beginning of my interest in HAM.

Another reason for my interest is knowing of all the times, especially in disasters, when HAM radios were the only way information could be transmitted to those who needed to know. HAM and MARS have been and continue to be an incredible blessing to so many people - I would be thrilled to help in that effort.

You refer to machines cobbled together from junk as a "problem" - why is that? I think it is terribly clever to be able to do that - it is beyond my talents and abilities so I would have to just buy things. And what you did with a wifi router - amazing! Not a clue how a person would do that, and what a great idea to have a disguise! I'd be all for a disguise of any equipment. Router, stereo, microwave, LOL, whatever!

Some of these are inexpensive - well under $100 for some. Is this better than a scanner? Both needed? [link to www.ebay.com (secure)]

You are amazing! I'm so grateful for your presence here, and your willingness to be so forthcoming with every sort of assistance! Thank you 4
 Quoting: Pooka

I knew what you meant but I didn't want anyone else reading the thread to have misconceptions :)

Even radio receivers have been historically confiscated by totalitarian regimes such as the Soviets and the Nazis. Under those governments you could only get radios that tuned into the 'proper' stations. Interestingly enough, the Soviets licensed hams but they were always under heavy scrutiny. The problem of being able to make your own equipment was always one of these idiotic regimes.

Scrolling through that link, the DX-394 has pretty good reviews on eham.net and is a pretty good price, the DX-100 and the Hallicrafters get beat up pretty bad in the reviews.

Just noticed that I missed an important question. You should look at the general coverage receiver and a scanner, they cover different parts of the radio spectrum.

The general coverage receiver covers the medium and short wave part of the spectrum which is where all of the international news and long distance ham traffic occurs. The scanner covers higher frequencies and covers the local government radios. I used to listen to traffic stops on my scanner where the officer would call information to dispatch and dispatch would reply whether there was a warrant or not. Many emergency services have switched to trunking radio (which requires a scanner that has that capability) and encryption (which is a hassle for the services and might not be used) I use a really old Bearcat scanner. You can pick up a lot if signals with one that you might not think about.

Really old cordless phones - back in the 90s my neighbors would take their cordless phone 'off the hook' and I could listen to them snore on my scanner... or worse. Cordless phones today are far more secure. I would listen in on pagers, most of the time it was buzzes but voice pagers - oh my! With my scanner I'd wait until 8:00 and then things would go nuts with doctor's offices getting voice pages. Again, this is from a time past. But it illustrates the point. Even today you get warehouses on your scanner, you still get police and emergency services. There are other businesses that you can listen too, including hospitals.

Just an antenna. A receiver has no need for a microphone. A simple long wire as an antenna is adequate because listening isn't as demanding as talking.

Other than something critical occurring post-SHTF, I cannot imagine a reason I would want to communicate long-distance such as around the world - only listening, so that's a good thing. Not going to get into QSL cards - that can become an addiction, I understand. It would be great fun, but better not to get into it.

On the APRS.fi site you gave me, I cannot find a legend explaining what I see. WX in blue is weather station? Red W is? Telephone handset in blue. Letter I in green? Who ate the legend? LOL

I do hope other members of this thread are enjoying and thinking about HAM discussion - I'm hoping others will also become interested, whether as a hobby or for critical communication after what happens happens. You certainly make it seem easy, and are undoubtedly encouraging them as you encourage me!
