Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
One over-riding issue that has been making me crazy since last Thursday is trying to find things in fours that can be used to hold up pallets for my plants.
 Quoting: Pooka

I'm sorry to hear you are having a rough time, Pooka. As I am getting older, I am having pain in places I didn't even know I had.

Re: things that come in fours suitable for pallets - search 'bed risers'

Some places have them cheaper than others. I have a set (of four!) out in the shed somewhere. Cinderblocks might be cheaper.

My garden is looking pretty good so far this year (except for the weeds - ugh). The scarlet runner beans I planted in containers are doing well and climbing the structure. The ones in the ground got devoured, but one is trying to make a comeback.
 Quoting: Crunch62

I'm so excited about your scarlet runner beans! Are they climbing that structure you showed me? I just love those things - love the plants, the climbing, the beautiful red blossoms, and the long, long beans.

Regarding your pain and the bed risers - I found a set one time at a thrift shop and bought them - I have an oversize dryer, and couldn't reach to get the clothing out of the back of it. Bed risers are perfect for the purpose! IF you don't have the drawers under your laundry machines, your wife might give you a fresh blackberry pie if you would put her dryer up on those bed risers!!

Paint cans?

How high do you want the pallets?

Right now I don't care - these buckets will do fine. No, not paint "cans" - they'd just rust away. Paint "buckets". But no point paying that much for those when I can get the kind I really want for a dollar each!

MC, everything going on right now in ME and Vz and goodness knows where else is of great concern. Glad you posted this. I also advise reading Janey's thread re: Israel.

People, it's for times like these that we prep - so that we can safely stay home and watch events and be ready. Right now there are many concerns, clear up to nuclear events. I'm proud of all of us having done everything we can to be ready. Some, like Crunch, are very well prepared. Others, like me, have done as much as I can do. We each have to believe we are ready for whatever comes, to the best of our ability.

On a personal note, I am so excited about getting my three water buckets yesterday! I know that isn't much, but my goodness it's so much better than it was!

edit: Really suggest reading this thread, seriously!

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
I wanted to throw it back to beans for a post...

A way that turned out real good was a cooked white beans (great northern white beans).

When they were about 30 minutes from being done I added ketchup, molasis, onion powder, stirred it...then added a can of bushes baked beans.

The whole thing ended up tasting like bushes baked beans...which was pretty good!

Another time I made it the same way and diced up a can of spam & tossed it in...that ended up good as well.

That's one of my favorite ways to eat lentils (usually cooked with rice).. add some cooked greens... all of a sudden I'm wondering what I'm going to have for breakfast.

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
People, I do check in here, but am more focused on war thread and domestic issues for right now.

As it turns out, we did not use the four smaller buckets yesterday when setting up pallets and moving plants, so I have three tall ones and four small ones for water, and arranged the hose yesterday so it will go all the way into the garage so nobody has to lift full buckets of water. Nobody is here today, so I can wash and fill in privacy, which is perfect. I might call Walmart and see if they have any more of the larger square ones first, so they go on the bottom of the stack.

People, I hope, even if you haven't followed the war thread, that you are taking the risk seriously and have gone for everything you need in preparations, including water, and are prepared to stay home and ride out the first wave of whatever is going to happen, til we see how it all settles out.

For some reason I'm getting a real urge to slow cook a huge roast with potatoes, onions, and mushrooms...and freeze it in single portions.

Odd, I usually only get the urge to do that in the dead of winter.

MC, in some ways this IS the dead of winter. I say cook and freeze!

There are too many possibilities right now of upheaval - so go for it!

I have washed four square buckets and put them in place in the garage. Lids are washed as well. Going to bring in the hose, which just yesterday was moved from behind some things, though helper had no idea why I wanted it that way, so now I can drag it through the kitchen, into the garage, and fill buckets. With those four filled, I will fill as many as will stack on top of them yet not reach the breaker box. Hurray!!!!!

Cook your roast, my friend. Excellent plan!

That's why I'm thinking the urge is hitting me.

But now I'm thinking carrots instead potatoes...potatoes don't freeze well. And I LOVE cooked carrots! :)

Cooked my first morel last night, have a few more on the way. Also stopped by the store last night and added more food to the supply.

And speaking of food, there's a lot of seed deals going on right now. There's one place that I can get American Seed packets 6 for $1.00. American Seed isn't considered a top seed company but the interesting thing is that they seem to have a lot of open pollinated varieties that you might pay a premium for from other companies as 'heirloom'. From the seeds that I've started they seem to do alright.

My brother has a large chunk of marsh & I just (3 days ago) planted 6 types of sunflowers over there.

I made a bunch of seedballs...a brown paper lunch bag, you put in a handfull of dirt, then 5 seeds, then another handfull of dirt.

We dropped them all in the marsh area & now it's rained for the last day & a half.

It should look pretty cool (if they make it).

 Quoting: Mental Case

It's the little lump at the base of the back. Normally people just cut them off and throw them away cause they are basically just skin covered fat. But if you suate them to a crisp and place them in soups and stws or vegtables they can add a lot of flavor.
